Chapter four
While I spent the rest of the day with Jake we got a call from Rafael, we should meet him when it's dark, at one of his safe-house-apartments.
"Alright, I promised the Misses to be home for dinner. So, we'll make this quick." Rafael said when Jake, Gabriel and I all arrived at the apartment. "We'll go to Spain in two weeks, I have to meet a few people and got some business there, but I need people with me who I trust. You are the chosen ones, Gabriel is with me for six years now and you, Jane, had the cleanest background check I saw." He walked around the room, he's nervous, unsure. "I'll call you all for more information." He said and then quickly left, leaving us behind with question marks everywhere. "What's wrong? Why is he so nervous?" I asked Gabriel, pretending I wouldn't know the reason. "The twins, they were supposed to call him this morning. They didn't. So I went over to their hotel, they didn't even get there last night. They just disappeared. It makes him nervous because they had influence and were good at what they're doing. He's worried that someone is after him now. And honestly, I think, for a second, he thought it could have been his father to keep Rafael from being more powerful than himself. That's why we met here: no cameras and nobody knows about it... He thinks..." Gabriel said and for a second I thought he suddenly lost his accent, but I shook of that thought because it was just not logical. "Should we go then?" Jake asked, Gabriel nodded "Yes sure, you two lovebirds probably have better plans, don't you?" he laughed, Jake grinned, and I felt heat coming up into my cheeks. One after another we left the flat and the building and drove home.
"Did you notice something unusual about Gabriel earlier?" I heard Jake ask when I opened the fridge to look for food. "No, what do you mean?" "The way he said that Rafael thinks nobody knows about the apartment." He explained. "Doesn't mean anything, I mean they don't know for sure how much the authorities know about them." I looked for an explanation. "And did you notice the slight British accent when he greeted us?" he asked, "Also doesn't mean anything, maybe he lived there for a while, if you once get it you probably never completely lose it, look at you for example, you got it too, even though you live in America for 18 years now." I took a yogurt and sat next to Jake on the couch, he turned on his laptop. "Sure but... I don't know." He opened a file called >stuff that's useless< and opened the program of our agency that also had a weird name: >high school meeting<. He typed in the name >Gabriel Santiago. < and opened the top file. "He was never ever in the UK, see that?" Jake said when he showed the list of countries Gabriel has been in. "Well then maybe one of his parents was British and he learned speaking two accents, I don't know what you are trying to reach with this." "I want to know what agency he is from." He explained. "What do you mean by that? What the hell are you imagining?" I asked and leaned back into the couch pillows. "He knows that the government knows about Rafael's secret apartment, and he has a British accent but never was in the UK, he seems too nice and... I just got a feeling." He said. "He probably just got a new identity because he has a bigger purpose than we have, he needs to find more than proofs that bring Rafael to prison for a while. Probably has to find out how to stop him from getting out ever again. Or something like that..." he stayed with his theory. "Okay, do whatever you want, run his picture through the whole database, ask around, have fun with that, I'll go to bed now..." I sat up and leaned closer to him "...alone." I added whispering in his ear. "Forget about that, running his picture will take a while, I can do whatever I want while that program is running, honey." He said, I just got up and went to the bedroom where I let myself fall on the bed, a few seconds later Jake followed and kneeled over me, we started kissing and slowly lost our clothes.
I woke up in the middle of the night because I was cold. It took me a while to realize why I was cold: Jake was gone. His heat usually kept me warm and now he's gone. I looked for my phone to see how late it was but it was early, really early. 3.13 A.M. I sat up and saw a little light from the living-room shine through the door. I stood up, wrapped the blanket around me and went to the door. "Jake?" I asked, he sat in front of his laptop. "What are you doing? Come back to bed." I kept walking and sat on the couch next to him. "I found something." He said and seemed to be wide awake. "About Gabriel?" I asked and leaned against his shoulder to look at the screen. "Yes. MI6 got an Agent in America, high priority, partly classified because he is still in field, six years in exactly nine days, parents came from Mexico, went to Europe when he was five, lived there until his undercover mission in America started. This guy has an impressive history, many exciting missions." He told me, I had to think about it before I could say something because I was still in a sleeping-mode. "Do you know how many Agents MI6 has? Undercover Agents." I asked "No but we got access to the files about the ones in our country, except for the names they got here and Thomas Morales is the only one that would fit with Gabriel Santiago. I mean... six years. Gabriel is with Rafael for six years, and you can definitely hear the British accent sometimes and Thomas' mother is Mexican..." he explained, I sighed and closed my eyes for a few seconds. "Can we talk about this later? I just want to sleep." I asked "Why'd you even get up? You didn't have to." He wondered. "Wow you really are an idiot." I stood up "I felt protected by you and warm and comfortable in your arms. I only didn't have nightmares the last nights because I felt like you'd protect me from them. But okay, let's forget about that, I hope you sleep nicely on that stone couch. Good night." I pulled the blanket tighter around me and turned around to go back to bed. "Jane! I'm sorry. Wait!" he got up too and followed me but I was already in the bedroom and shut the door. "Rule number 2, Mister. You sleep on the couch." I reminded him und threw myself on the mattress and snuggled into my pillow. "Come on, babe. I'm sorry." Jake came inside "Go away!" I said and made myself big enough to take over the whole bed. "No space around here." I added, he sighed. "But I'll leave the door open." He gave up "To hear when you are scared." He added and then left.
It took me long to fall asleep again, I just couldn't get comfortable but when I finally did the sun started rising and I did not have any nightmares.
Next time I woke up the sun was up high on the sky, I heard Jake talk in the kitchen, I got up with the blanket around me and went to him. I leaned on the counter until he hung up. "Did Sophie call? I totally overslept. " I asked "It's okay, I told her you would still be sick, you needed the sleep. Since I woke you tonight I thought it would be better you'd just keep sleeping." He explained. "And why aren't you at work?" I asked my next question, he put down a plate in front of me, with pancakes he just got out of the microwave. "Because I am free today and wanted to take care of my girlfriend after I have been such an idiot." He said and gave me a knife and a fork to eat. "How are you so sure that I won't stab you with this knife when you have been an idiot?" I asked and pointed at his throat with the knife. "Because I know that I am an idiot and I apologized a lot and made you an amazing breakfast and you would probably be arrested for betraying your country if you kill someone of who you know is working to protect this country." He looked critically. "Ya... I think the last one is a good reason..." I thought and started eating. "It's really sweet that you feel protected when I am with you. And I am happy that I can help you with these nightmares. But you know that I can probably not always be right next to you when you need me, I'll try but you know it's going to be hard." He leaned over the counter to kiss me, I just smiled at him.
Two weeks later we arrived at an airport in Spain. It was just us four, two pilots and three stewardesses. After unpacking at the Rodriguez house and sleeping out our jetlag Gabriel and I left the house and went to town. He walked through some dark, lonely, small streets and I followed him. When I thought I would die because of the temperatures he entered a building, it was an old warehouse, and it was fresh and cool inside. "Don't use it until necessary." He gave me a gun, he trusted me. "What are we doing here?" I asked him "Maybe a bit of drug trafficking, we need to pick something up and Rafael thinks you're good at saying if someone's trustworthy." He explained and started moving again, further inside. I hid the gun in my waistband and kept following.
"Hello there Francesca." Gabriel said when we entered a big room, a woman turned to us. Dark brown hair, brown eyes, gun in her hand. "Gabriel, hey. It's been a while." She replied, "What are you doing here?" the man in front of me ignored her. "Got business, what about you?" "Yeah... that's the reason why I asked you: I am here for business, Rafael's and he doesn't like sharing his business partners, so I will ask once again: what are you doing here?" he stepped closer to her. He already looked intimidating but the way he made himself even taller kind of scared me. "I got a better question: Who is she?" she looked past him at me. "Doesn't matter, answer my question, Fran!" his voice was loud. "Okay!" she yelled back "Miguel needs some new partners, he sent me to talk to you, so you could talk to Rafael or Victor, Miguel needs help." She confessed "You know that none of them would help him, they hate the fact that Miguel is selling people like objects... you know that, why would you even try?" he said and seemed a bit more relaxed. "Because they owe him something for Maria." She looked at me again.
Maria was Rafael's sister, her file was short, she has nothing to do with the cartel of her family but was kidnapped because of it two years ago, but only the Rodriguez family and Miguel Verándo know by who. Miguel got her back somehow. Many people think Miguel himself kidnapped her and wanted to sell her before he realized how much she meant to Rafael and Victor and brought her back.
"Fine I'll talk to Rafael, now leave so we can meet our new partner." Gabriel looked around nervously. "I am that partner, trying to set up an own business." She said "Not going to work but what do you have for me?" Gabriel asked, I just kept watching them. "A bit of everything, I need you to get it to the sates." She said and turned away to go to a door behind her. Gabriel took his weapon out and pointed it at her. "You shouldn't even try it Gabe." Francesca said without looking. "Did you really think I came alone? And did you really think I wouldn't know that she is just responsible for art and not really a hitting girl? You wouldn't give her a gun and I wouldn't come alone." She said and now turned around in the door. "Good evening, Santiago." I heard from behind me, I turned around and walked backwards, closer to Gabriel he took a glimpse of the man that pointed his gun at us. "Is he all you got?" my partner asked "Don't you think he is enough? Two against one, you already lost. And that girl is going to be easy to get sold. Look at how pretty she is, and you know Miguel likes American women." "So, it's just you two?" Gabriel asked again, I could literally hear him smile. "Obviously." She sounded annoyed but also confused. "Alright then try taking her." He said. I saw the guy coming closer and went even closer to Gabriel until we stood back on back in the middle of the room. I felt his muscular back on mine and had a weird thought about seeing him without a shirt but that though left again because of the situation we were in. What else I noticed about him, he was nervous, all his muscles were tense. And that was not everything I realized, it was not just his body that made me think it was a tense situation. Also, the way their voices sounded, they knew each other for a while and it was obvious that they had a history together.
The guy kept coming closer and as soon as he was close enough I put my hands up and took his wrist. With his free hand he tried freeing his by grabbing mine, I took his arm and pushed it down, he let the gun fall and turned but before he could do anything else he had my elbow in his face and went on the ground, he pulled me with him but I managed to sit on him and took the gun he just had in his hand to hold it right in front of his face. "You sure she can't take it?" Gabriel asked "Now put down your gun and let us go." I told her "You are such a strong woman Jane..." Gabriel said while taking the gun of Francesca. "I know, let's go then." I answered and stood up. "Tell Miguel I will visit him tomorrow, with a surprise." He said and then followed me back outside in the heat of Spain's crowded streets. "Where next?" "Just follow me. We're gonna meet someone who is trying to sell a painting to Rafael, he doesn't trust that person, so you need to proof if they are trustworthy or not, something you're good at. And after that we can go back, it's gonna be dark by then. Rafael wanted to go to a club later." He told me and now walked next to me. "Who was that woman back there?" I asked "My ex. Right hand of Miguel Verándo, another really powerful Mafia boss but lower than Rafael. She cheated on me and then blamed me for it because it was a long-term relationship and I >have never been there for her< so she cheated on me with that guy you could have shot." He told me "Wow... is she like dumb and blind and stupid or something like that?" I said as serious as I could. "No, why?" Gabriel seemed confused. "I mean: have you seen you? Have you talked to you? Seriously you are amazing! She has to be those things if she cheats on you." I smiled and put my hand on his shoulder what made him smile at me. "Well... I am over it, after being with her I hooked up with a guy when I was drunk, and I found out that I am gay so... yes, we don't have to keep talking about that." He said and I saw him blushing "You know it's okay for me, right?" I smiled "Yes, sure!" he said and looked away. "Okay, if you don't want to talk about it then we won't. How long does it take until we arrive?" I asked, he had to think "Three more corners... maybe four minutes." He told me. "Okay... why didn't we come with a car?" I whipped the sweat of my face and waved some air into my face. "The streets are filled with people at this time, many tourists, would have taken even longer and most of the places we are visiting in this week aren't reachable with a car anyways, so get used to it." He explained. I put my hair up into a ponytail while we kept walking.
"Do you know someone called Thomas Morales?" I asked him out of the blue, I simply couldn't forget what theory Jake had about Gabriel being a secret MI6 Agent. And his reaction gave me every answer I needed, he suddenly had stopped and looked at me. "No, who is that?" he was obviously worried that I found out to tell Rafael, but I wanted to show him that there was no reason to be worried. Since I was not even allowed to talk to any other agents while I am on a mission or while they are on a mission -except for when clearly ordered- I just shook my head and waved it out with my hand. "Doesn't matter, Jake just heard the name and thought about buying a fish to call him Thomas." I said and with that I did not just expose myself but also Jacob. Gabriel knew now that Jake and I were agents, if he really was Thomas Morales. Talking about giving a fish the name of the agent in front of someone is a secret code that was never written down or taught, every secret agent working for a government agency that was cooperating with the American government, just knew this code. It was there to assure someone that you are backup and on the same side without any risk.
Since MI6 knew about the code too Gabriel just smiled. "I thought about getting a bird to call it Jake." He fake-laughed to hide the secret reply to my confession. He was an agent, and we were agents, the three closest people to Rafael Rodriguez and we were on the same side, if we wouldn't and if he would have changed sides during the last years, he would have already shot me and then Jake to protect Rafael. But the fact that he just went on with our way, made me sure of him being still on the right side.
After getting a stolen painting, that was an original, for Rafael and walking back to the Rodriguez house and getting ready for the club we walked past a row of people standing in front of it. Since Rafael was a VIP with much money and power, we were allowed to just get inside without a security check or anything else. There were some complaining noises from the waiting people, but we just ignored them and kept going. As soon as we were inside, I stopped. The club was completely filled with people, it was loud and tight, barely any space. I started feeling anxious, I noticed how my heart started racing. Colorful lights were flashing all around me and people didn't look where they were going so many shoulders touched mine. After staring in the crowd of dancing, drunk humans I thought for a second that I saw Charles Cooper. I felt tears in my eyes, my heart still racing, my muscles shaking and feeling numb.
When a hand took mine, I woke from my trance. I looked at the person that held my hand, it was Jake. He had a soft smile on his lips and a lovable look in his eyes. "You are okay. Just breath." He said pushing away everyone that came too close to me. I looked around trying to find Charles' face again. "Look at me!" Jake put his fingers on my chin and made me look at him. "Focus." He said before kissing me. When we moved back from each other I felt safe again. No more heart racing, no more shaking. "Thanks." I whispered, I knew he wouldn't hear me but he would know what I said. He took my hands and pulled me with him, following Rafael and Gabriel. "Jake!" I called for him and stopped, since he still held my hands, he stopped too and turned to me with a confused look. I pulled him closer and laid my arms around his neck to be able to say something only he could hear. "You were right about Thomas." I said and got more distance between us again to look at him. Jacob smiled. He was happy that he was right but didn't enjoy it too much because he knew I still felt uncomfortable at this place. After a few more seconds and a short kiss we kept going through the club.
At the evening of the next day Gabriel and I were in a car on our way to visit Miguel to tell him that Rafael won't help him.
"About that bird I told you about. I was thinking about getting it tonight and I think I need your help." Gabriel said after a few minutes of silence. "Can't we speak openly?" I whispered, he nodded. "Yes... right... this car was controlled four hours ago... we can talk..." he said, and I looked at him surprised because of the way he can switch off his accent. "Unusual that I am British, huh?" he smiled "Yes." I agreed insecure about what I should say next. "It's weird." He started another topic "Talking to someone without staying focused on the accent every second and to talk to someone who knows that I am actually here for another purpose." He keeps talking and makes a right turn. "You really did not have one person who you could share your honest thoughts with, for six years?" I asked impressed "Yes. But I wrote everything down, like old times, on paper with a pen and I hid it under the floor of my apartment." He explained. "Impressive. What is your mission? Why are you here this long already? If it would be about arresting Rafael, you would have enough proofs by now, you would be back out by now." I thought. "It was never about Rafael, this mission. It had a bigger purpose, Rodriguez was just my ticket inside. He needed someone to trust and to support him after he started splitting up with his father, I was the chosen one, had to gain his trust and be part of this society. It was hard not to fall for all the power and money these mafia bosses have but I always remembered my promise... okay back to the topic: I am here to keep all the undercover agents safe and sound and in duty. There is someone who has access to all the government files. Files about every kind of secret service agent, every single undercover agent. From America. That's why they got Britain's finest undercover MI6 Agent into this world." He complimented himself what made me smile. "And I think I can finally go home soon. I know where the hard drive is that contains all this information. And I know who the one is that has access to the files. I just need a woman's help to get into Miguel Verándos bedroom and I need to find Daniel Blake." He continued "Let me guess. I am the woman who needs to get into this guy's bedroom. Since you can't contact anyone for help and luckily I showed up and exposed myself as a possible back-up and help." I guessed "Exactly." He agreed and parked the car in front of a big, modern house. "There you go." He gave me a syringe with something liquid inside. "Won't kill him but make him unconscious. You can look through the most secure room in the house, the bedroom. To get there you have to flirt with him, and when I say we should leave, you say you want to stay a bit longer, then I leave, and you make out with him until the bedroom door is locked. Just destroy the hard drive when you found it and delete every possible copy, best: destroy the computer and take the data-disc after deleting, or something like that, you just have to be sure. Just make sure you wait an hour before leaving the bedroom again, I'll wait for you in the car. Right around that corner." He pointed out the window. "You explained me your plan and it sounds good but did I agree with being part of this?" I asked, he looked at me as if he thought I was serious, so I laughed. "Don't worry! I promised to keep my people save and that's what it takes. Now turn on that accent-thing of yours and let's go." I said and hid the syringe in my bra before jumping out of the car.
While having a tense dinner with Miguel Verándo and Gabriel Santiago I sometimes touched Miguels hand or laughed too loud about a joke and made allusions about him and me.
After an hour Gabriel said goodbye and I followed the plan and said that I wanted to stay longer. Miguel didn't want to talk anymore, as soon as Gabriel went through the door, the -admittedly- attractive man pulled me close to him. With his warm, tattooed, muscular arms he picked me up as soon as I kissed him back. It didn't feel like cheating on Jake because I knew what I did this for so I could fully engage with it. Miguel was a strong man so he could pick me up easily, he first sat me on the table and had quick plans since he put his hands under my shirt wanting to take it off. I stopped him and put my hand on his flat, muscular chest to push him away. I felt his heartbeat under the black shirt he wore. "Let's go somewhere without cameras." I asked. An hour before, at the front door, Gabriel told me that the bedroom didn't have cameras so I was safer there.
"Sure." The man murmured back, picked me up again and while he brought me to the bedroom, he sometimes pushed me on walls to kiss me or make me feel how much he wanted me. Gabriel and Francesca were right, this guy has a thing for American women. In the bedroom he directly locked the door and sat on the bed with me on his lap. "Please open my bra, it's uncomfortable." I asked him to make it easier and less noticeable to get the syringe into my hand. He did what I asked for, the plastic peace fell into my hand and before he noticed it, he had the whole liquid in his veins. He took a deep breath before he went KO under me on his bed. "And good night." I said and stood up, closed the bra again and started looking around for the hard drive and a computer.
Another thing Gabriel was right about: this must have been the safest room in the whole house, because Miguel kept the hard drive -with the most important information a guy like him could ever possess- pretty openly on his desk, next to a laptop. Since the laptop also wasn't locked, I checked if it was the right hard drive and because of curiosity I put it in the pocket of my skirt and then deleted the copy and tried finding the mails of the person that had access to the files, I blocked the address and everything familiar to it before deleting it and then I was already done.
I took a look at the time and still had to waste thirty minutes. I spent it looking around the room, he had a few paintings on the wall, and I couldn't help it to inspect the attractive, unconscious man on the bed. As soon 57 minutes passed, I left the room and then the house to get to Gabriel.
"It's over." I saidwith a smile "Not yet, I'll help you too. We will finish this together." He saidand suddenly pulled me on his chest for a hug.
