Shoot Me
And that is the story behind how Day6 came up with the lyrics of "Shoot Me," together, partly because Jae was still recovering from the shock of bumping into one of the best rapper's the world has got to offer, and partly because they were sick of love songs that never addressed the correct issue: an improper use of language.
If you think about it, the start and end of all relationships are words. Words shape everything. Words that are beautiful nurture a relationship, spark feelings to grow. Words that are used as weapons, hurt a person, deeply wound them, and cause their connections to break.
That's what happened with the main character of "Congratulations." His relationship did not work out because he never used the proper words to communicate with the girl. Hence, after breaking away, both of them sang songs of their true feelings that neither heard.
Jae thought about it. Perhaps that was the reason for why soundtracks existed and new singers were forced to play them. Because sometimes, people didn't express the right ideas or feelings at the right time in the right words, so songs did it for them. Lyrics, verse, poetry, became a replacement to convey the truths people didn't. It was a law of the universe.
And perhaps also to teach singers what type of songs need to be sung.
From these thoughts, reflections, Shoot Me, a song about hurtful words, was born.
"Wow, I didn't know we were intellectuals," said Sungjin.
"We're actually pretty well-organized and smart," agreed Wonpil.
They were sitting in the lobby, instruments, papers, and uneaten food scattered about.
"Yeah," said Dowoon, "we think very carefully about our music."
Young K jumped from nowhere, a paper in his hand and pencil in his mouth.
"Okay, y'all listen up. I don't know what the next lyric line in English should be: I'm okay, or it's okay. What should we choose?"
"Let's rock paper scissors for this part," suggested Jae.
"Great idea."
They filmed Shoot Me in an aesthetic, vintage restaurant, with brick walls, old-fashioned tables and stools, a perfect setting for a classic break up, and a woman metaphorically "shooting" the male with her hurtful words. They had actors set up for their roles, dressed elegantly in white or plad, and props prepared, ketchup for blood, paint to splatter on the walls, and confetti to throw around and color the dreary, dark scene.
Most importantly, they worked on it completely together.
The song was entirely theirs.
