part 4

Can there be trust?

"Whoa, there sorry."
He apologized... No one's ever apologized to Jade. "It's okay. Why are you alone, anyway? I thought wolves lived in packs."
A prick of curiosity surges through Jade. Is he a loner?
The wolf fidgets. "They kicked me out since I'm not a purebred grey wolf."
"That's terrible! Why would they do that" Jade gasps. His own family abandoned him. Then again, her humans weren't too great either. She shudders at the memory.
"It's code of the pack. I'm not purebred, I'm part dire wolf. The pack can't afford to pass on those genes."
Wolves are weird. They need everything perfect and organized. "The names Phantom, by the way." He says it with such air, like he's important. He's proud. "Jade." She says, copying his moves in mock-pride. "Ha-ha, very funny." He jiggles his rump. Jade snickers. Phantom is pretty funny. He turns around and starts walking. "Come on, I might as well show you around." Phantom says over his shoulders. Jade hesitates. Can he be trusted? Yes. She walks after Phantom, her green eyes wide with excitement. A home. Food, water and shelter. A possible friend. Jade's life is changing for the better. She knows it.
