Escaping

Jack's P.O.V.

I sat down on the cold, hard ground, as I looked through the bars of my cell. I've been in here for two weeks and let me tell you; It is VERY boring!

The booms of the cannons rang in my ear every hour. The firing of the Daleks' guns never ceased and neither did the shouts of the Timelords'.

I glared up at the guard who was standing in front of my cell. He must have felt my gaze, because he turned and looked at me.

"Stop giving me that look, Jack." He said. "You are in here, because of your own actions. You could be-"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah." I inturrupted. "I could be up there, killing Daleks and fighting for my planet, if I had followed the rules. I know, I know..."

He had been telling me that for the past two weeks. Of course, now it was stuck in my head.

He nodded and looked away. "Right."

I looked him over. He was tall and had curly black hair. He had on a black trench coat and black jeans. He wore a black helmet and had a long staff at his side. I looked at his trench coat and smiled. I really liked that coat. It was a very nice coat.

My eyes widened as I noticed the keys that were hanging on one of the loops of his trench coat. I could not believe that they were just dangling there, waiting for me to take them.

I stood up and walked towards the bars. I held onto the bars with both hands and reached out with my left hand. I pointed off to the right and yelled, "WHAT'S THAT!?"

When he turned his head to look at what I was pointing to, I reached down and grabbed the keys, unhooking them from the loop on his coat. I quickly shoved them in my pocket and shrugged.

"Oh, nevermind." I said. "I must have been hallucinating again."

The guard shook his head and continued looking straight, guarding my cell. I frowned. That was too easy. I was surprised that he didn't feel or hear me take his keys.

Suddenly, footsteps were heard, running down towards the cells. A soldier stopped at the bottom of the stairs and put his hands on his knees. He was breathing heavily, obviously, because he was running.

"I... we..." He said, between breaths. "We are... We are getting killed out there! More Timelords are being killed than Daleks! Their... Their getting shot faster than they can regenerate! We need all of our soldiers up top! General's orders!"

My guard looked at him like he was crazy. I would have, too. "What about the prisoners!?" He asked.

The soldier stood up after he finally caught his breath. "Leave them here!" He replied. "They are weaponless and they cannot escape! When the General says something, you do it!" And with that, he ran back up the stairs.

All the guards nodded and followed him. My guard turned to me and said, "Take care of yourself , Jack." He winked at me, before running to join everyone on the surface.

Now, that I think about it, why did he wink at me? Did he know that I took the keys? He must have, since he would have to be pretty stupid not to.

At any rate, I did not waste time in opening my cell. I grabbed the keys out of my pocket and put one in the keyhole. I turned it back and forth, but it did not budge, so I moved on to the next one. That's when I realized that this guy had WAY too many keys.

I kept trying them, hoping that one of them would work soon. I did not want to be caught escaping.

Finally, I found the right key! I turned it and opened the bars. I took a step out of my cell and breathed in a huge sigh of relief. I was finally free.

I ran to the desk that had my things in them and opened the drawers. I smiled when I looked down at my Sonic Screwdriver. If I had this baby earlier, I would have been out of that smelly cell two weeks ago! I put her in my pocket and started to walk towards the door.

As I walked past all the cells, many of the prisoners reached out of their bars and begged me to take them with me. I shook my head, as I crept up the stairs to the surface.

It's not that I didn't want to save anyone, it was just the fact that all those Timelords down there were insane. They had been locked in those cells for hundreds of years. I was just so grateful that I had this opportunity to escape. Who knows how long until I would have become insane, as well?

I reached the door to the surface and looked out of the window. What I saw brought tears to my eyes. Hundreds of Timelord bodies lying on the ground and blood everywhere. The Daleks had moved on to the next battlefield.

I opened the door and stepped outside. There was a TARDIS garage a few hundred feet off to my right. Since I did not have my Timelord liscense, I would have to steal one.

I gulped, as I walked towards the garage, stepping around the bodies of my fellow Timelords. By the time I reached the garage, tears had fallen down my cheeks. I wiped my face on my shirt and opened the door. It was very dark and quiet inside. I turned on the light and looked around. There were four TARDISes in the room and a workbench in the back. Obviously, someone had been working on them.

I took a closer look at each of them. I opened the first one and shook my head. The console was torn apart and there were no railings where they should have been. I opened the second one and again, I shook my head. That one was even worse. I moved on to the third one and smiled. Now, this one was perfect. It had a perfect console, perfect railings, and a perfect paint job.

Suddenly, I heard the door to the garage open. I looked over at the door and my eyes widened. There, standing a few feet in front of me was the guard who was guarding my cell. I don't know if he saw me, because he fell to the ground after he walked in.

I rushed to his side and looked him over. He had many bullet holes in his chest and his face was burnt. When he opened his eyes, he barely recognized me.

"Jack?" He asked. "Is that you?"

I nodded. Even though he was my guard in the cellar, I had tears falling down my face. "Yeah, it's me."

He nodded and winced. "This is my final regeneration. I'm... I'm not going to survive these." He gestured to his wounds. "Please, Jack. Take one of my TARDISes and fly away from here. At... at least, one of us would survive."

I frowned at his words. "These TARDISes are yours?" I asked.

"Yes. I've been... repairing them since they... were sent to Trenzelore." He said. He coughed and took in a shaky breath. "Take one... and run away. I know that you... will be of more service... outside of Gallifrey."

He placed a golden key into my hand and his eyes closed. He took one last breath, before his body moved no more. Blue essence escaped his mouth and flew up into the air. I watched the particles go through the ceiling, knowing that they were on their way to Trenzelore.

I closed my hand around the key and walked to the TARDIS that I had picked out earlier. I put the key in my pocket and walked inside, closing the door behind me.
