Chapter 23

It was dark; it did not need to be but she felt more comfortable that way, like it protected her from prying eyes. The flat screen monitor gave an eerie glow to the room. It was old technology, hundreds of years old. The monitor appeared like a large tablet, but could not project the screen out and needed a separate computer box to operate. Also, you could not touch the screen to control the device, instead needing a keyboard and mouse. There were only two reasons to own one of these computers; either you were a collector, possibly a museum, or you wanted to utilise technology that was unable to connect to current infrastructure, technology that it was incredibly hard to spy on.

The latter was Kendra's reason. She checked her watch, he would be connected now via a personal WiFi network, a technology also long since abandoned. Kendra looked behind her, even though she knew no one was there, she made one final check before she started the conversation.

The mouse clicks echoed around the apartment as she opened the messaging program. A list of contacts appeared, her's contained only one person, someone called Overlord161. She double clicked on the name, creating a new window on the screen. As she typed, a message appeared under her online pseudonym, HappyFarmer. 'Is all proceeding well?'

The screen showed that Overlord161 was typing. 'Yes, I have been placed on a job that gives me direct access to the voting program.'

'Excellent, I intend to call the vote tomorrow.'

'Tomorrow!' The screen again showed 'Overlord161 is typing,' so Kendra did not reply. 'I can rig the vote but am still working on the best way to cover the digital footprints.'

'You better work faster, then.'

'It may affect the price.'

'The price stays the same.'

'I could always go to the news.'

'I control the news.'

Overlord161 did not type for some time. Kendra waited, she needed to be sure the job would be completed.

'I could always go to the other board members.'

'And incriminate yourself!'

Another pause before Overlord161 responded, 'I could always use a third-party program routed through different servers to change Giles' password, then use his account to hack the data. It will take some time but would appear that someone had hacked his account first if anyone looked closely.'

'What have I told you about using real names on here?'

'Sorry.'

'The plan sounds like it will work though.'

'Looks like I'm pulling an all nighter.'

'I best let you get on.'

Kendra smiled and logged off, she was one step closer to burying her secrets.
