Instant kill engaged

Peter's world stopped with a scream.

He watched with horror as Tony plummeted from the sky.

It had been a routine mission. Just something that would take no more than a few minutes.

But then it turned bad.

Natasha was down, Clint was down, Steve was getting overwhelmed, and Bruce was still back at the tower. They had thought they wouldn't need hulk.

But it was bad. So bad.

Peter dropped to his knees beside Tony's still form, breath catching in his throat.

"Dad? Dad! Please, wake up! Please!"

He felt for a pulse, and panicked when he couldn't find one.

Then he let out a sob of relief as he felt a faint beat under his fingers.

He heard movement behind him, and turned.

It was one of those... things. The bots.

As it leapt towards them, he webbed it down, fury filling his heart.

They weren't going to take his family away. Not again.

He gritted his teeth. "Friday, take dad back to the tower."

"Yes, Peter."

Seconds later, the suit closed, and lifted off.

Peter pulled his mask on. "Karen? Instant kill. Now."

"Yes Peter. Instant kill engaged."

The eyes of his suit narrowed to red dots, and he ran forward, flipping off of debris, reaching the spot where Natasha was huddled.

Her leg was bleeding, and she was surrounded by the mangled remains of several bots.

She looked up, her eyes pained. "Peter, we can't-"

She noticed his eyes. "Peter? What's-?"

He ignored her, instead using several combinations of webs to bring the remaining bots down.

He worked methodically, but quickly, and viciously, rage spurring him on.

Then he moved on to Clint, doing the same thing.

Then Steve. He was doing better than the others, but he was within minutes of going down.

Peter flipped in, landing on the head of one of the bots. He jerked it around, breaking the mechanism inside, then using the built-in lasers to take down the rest.

Steve sank down on one knees, cradling his arm. "Peter, what's going on with your suit? And where's Tony?"

His words cut through the haze of red filling Peter's vision. He pulled off his mask, and sucked in a lungful of fresh air for the first time in minutes.

The eyes of his suit faded to white, and Peter shoved it in his pocket.

Natasha came hobbling over, leaning on Clint.

Peter didn't meet their eyes, instead walking back to the jet.

He sat in the front, away from the others, but he could still hear their conversation, thanks to his enhanced hearing.

"-see that? It was like-"
"-don't know what-"
"-started glowing red-"
"-have no idea-"
"-freaky, like he was-"

Peter ignored them, trying not to care that they were talking about him.

--------------

Peter stopped by the medical bay before going to his room.

Bruce reassured him that Tony would be fine, he was just sedated. He would wake up soon.

Then Peter made his way to the roof after changing into normal clothes, and a jacket.

He was out there the rest of the evening, and watched the sun go down.

He got a text from Bruce minutes later.

Dr Banner: Tony's awake. Kinda confused, but asking for you.

Peter: ok. Coming.

He stood up slowly, stretching, and trying to shake away the feeling of unease.

----------

Tony was sitting on the couch when Peter came in, talking quietly to Steve. Natasha and Clint watched.

All of them looked up as Peter opened the door, slipping in.

"Hey dad."

Tony smiled slightly. "Hey Pete. You okay?"

Peter leaned against the wall. "Uh huh. I'm fine. Worry about yourself."

Tony looked back at Steve, Natasha, and Clint. "How did you guys get out of there? Last thing I remember you guys were all down or going down."

Steve took a deep breath. "It was Peter. He- it was kind of freaky, but cool. The eyes of his suit went red, like red pinpricks. And the way he fought- just wow."

Peter sighed. "I turned on instant kill."

Tony sat up straighter. "You know that's only for emergencies."

Natasha sat up. "Tony-"

Peter cut her off.

"Well I'm sorry, Tony."

Tony went still at the use of his name.

"You were dead when I found you. No pulse. You weren't breathing. Steve was going down. Natasha was hurt. So was Clint, just less so. I did it to save my family. If that doesn't count as an emergency, then I don't know what does. But I can't lose another family. I can't."

With that, he stormed out, the door thudding behind him.

------------

Peter swung between the buildings, his breath coming in heavy gasps.

He'd stopped a mugging, but paid the price when he got a knife between his ribs.

It hurt.

A lot.

He finally let go of his web, landing and rolling across the rooftop.

That also hurt.

He lifted himself to his knees, falling back against the wall, fighting to stay awake.

"Incoming call from, Tony Stark." Karen said cheerfully. "Accept?"

Peter gritted his teeth, black swimming in his eyes. "No. No."

"Command overridden. Accepting call."

"Pete? You okay?"

That was all Peter heard before he blacked out.

------------

Peter shot up, heart racing, gasping for breath.

There was a rush of movement beside him, and a gentle voice.

"Hey, hey, hey, its okay. You're safe."

Peter looked around, taking in his surroundings.

Then his eyes met Tony's, who was sitting in the chair beside him.

"You good?"

Peter took a second to answer. "Yeah. Yeah. I- what... how long have I been out?"

Tony rubbed his eyes. "All evening, and night. You got stabbed yesterday."

Peter sighed. "That's the part I hate."

Tony frowned. "Getting stabbed?"

Peter chuckled. "Nah. The sleeping. I missed school."

Tony dropped his head to his hands. "You missed school because you got stabbed."

Peter sat up slowly. "That's a normal occurrence." He hesitated. "I'm sorry about yelling at you yesterday. I know you were just worried."

Tony nodded. "I'm sorry too. I didn't know how bad it was. Thanks for saving my life, by the way."

Peter grinned sheepishly. "Yeah."

He leaned forward, hugging Tony.

Tony smiled softly. "We good?"

"Mmph."

"Close enough."
