Chapter 6: Ow!
Papers shuffled between the hands of a young nurse, Minerva sought to complete all the paperwork for her idiot boyfriend's sudden appearance at the hospital.
In the background of all the phone calls and ringing of metal against metal, Minerva could hear the announcement of Layla's birthday quietly being played from the lobby area.
She sighed in frustration, gathered all documents with her, and left the comfort of the reception desk to head towards the designated room her boyfriend had been placed in.
Checking to see if she was at the correct room, she knocked on the door before entering to see said boyfriend staring up at the ceiling.
"Hi", he said.
"What happened, Devon?" Minerva lifted each of her papers, scanning through them for a report on his admission into her hospital.
"I was training with Blair, and we started to get competitive with each other. As you can see why I'm here, she won." Devon lifted his arm up, his other arm supporting it.
Minerva looked up from her notes of his story, jotting down the rest of the details as she scanned his body for other injuries.
"Has anyone taken your blood pressure or temperature yet? How about an X-ray?" She asked.
"Mercer did." He replied.
"No memory loss." She snickered as she placed her notes onto the nearby table.
Devon, seeing her snickering to herself, realized what had just happened.
"Was that a trick question?!"
"No issue with information processing." She continued.
"Is this because I'm here on Layla's birthday? Are you mad?" He asked.
Minerva reached out to touch every part of the supported arm. "I'm not mad. I would come in to treat you any day, even on her birthday."
Reaching down to his wrist, Devon slightly pulled back. Minerva sensing the pain from the reaction of his body, pressed her hand more onto the affected area.
"Ow ow ow. What happened to being gentle with your patients?! I think my nurse is trying to kill me." He shrieked, still pulling back his arm away from Minerva.
Silently, Minerva opened the drawer next to her, pulling out a roll of bandages. She began to unroll the bandages, placing one end slightly away from the affected area.
"You sprained your wrist." Minerva continued to roll the bandage around his wrist, being careful to avoid pressing on the area.
"No special treatment for your boyfriend?" Devon teased, helping Minerva by holding onto the opposite end of the bandage, while she finished wrapping the last of his hand.
"Nope." Minerva smiled as she pinned the end.
"I want your manager."
"You're talking to her."
"I want a higher up manager."
"Still talking to her." Minerva laughed, while Devon pouted his face at her.
"Get the owner down here." Devon playfully pointed to the door.
"Fifth in line to inheritance."
"Where's your brother?"
"Which one? I got older and younger brothers." Minerva brushed her hair behind, feigning an innocent look.
Devon squinted his eyes towards Minerva, finally giving in that he was not going to win this one with her.
Minerva continued to adjust his bandage, "I can't believe you are here on this day, of all days you choose to be hospitalized, it had to be on my best friend's birthday."
"I'm sorry. I don't plan the meetings. Goliath does." Devon shrugged, "I was just killing time with Blair, while we waited for him."
"Tell your boss that your girlfriend is angry with the idiot that got himself sent to the hospital with a sprained wrist." Minerva adjusted herself to start jotting another round of notes.
"I'm just doing what I do best. Fight. Keeps me in shape." Devon watched as she noted down the date and time of treatment onto her notes.
Minerva looked up briefly again from the papers, "You are the only one in the hospital. I think that's a sign."
Minerva placed her notes back onto the table, and began to walk close to the door.
Devon watched as she came closer to the phone attached to the wall next to the door, knowing what she was going to do next.
"Thanks. Feeling the love from my girlfriend."
Minerva picked up the receiver of the phone, "I'll order you some food and register you in for the treatment. You can stay with me tonight. Tomorrow, you can go back to your Region." She paused for a second. "Also, thank you for delivering my gift to Layla."
"So I get to stay the night with my beautiful Sunshine?" He lit up with the mention of not having to return home, happy to spend extra time with Minerva.
Beginning to dial the first numbers, Minerva looked back towards her boyfriend. "You want lunch or not?"
Devon attempted to make his cutest face possible, "Please."
Minerva finished off the number sequence, waiting for the ringing to begin.
A woman answered the other end of the seemingly silent call.
"Hey Mavis, do me another favor today." Minerva started, walking back towards Devon on the bed. She picked up the notes, while Devon took his good hand and placed it onto Minerva's waist to pull her down into his lap.
"You are calling from that room. Devon and his friends in there again?" Mavis started, tapping on her keyboard could be heard in the background of the call.
"No, it's only Devon this time. He sprained his wrist. Can you get him registered as treatment complete, and send a meal up to this room?" Minerva heard a pause, as Mavis placed a hold onto the call.
After a quick minute of holding, Mavis finally answered again. "Registered and a meal on the way. Mercer will deliver it."
Minerva smiled for her sister, "Thanks. I owe you one."
Mavis began laughing, "That's what sisters are for. Have fun watching the news with that hothead."
Minerva rolled her eyes, "Of course I will." She pressed 'end call' on the phone, placing it on the table next to them.
Devon wrapped his arms around Minerva, placing his head against Minerva's head. "I love you, Sunshine." He looked at her, puckering his lips to form a playful kissing face.
Minerva lightly smacked his good arm, "Save it." She laughed as he pretended to be hurt.
Pouting again, "Awww, baby. So you are mad."
"Love you too." Minerva reached over to Devon, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.
