Chapter 16

I looked at Jacob, wide eyed. "Chris..." I managed. He walked over, but not because of my lame whisper. "Okay, I need you guys to get us out," he explained.

"Chris!" I hissed. He turned to me, just as Taylor joined us. "What?"

"Jacobs a sea whisp," I said, straight to the point.

He smiled slightly, "haha, but it's not a time for jokes," he said. I turned to him wide eyed and brow furrowed. "Really, Chris? You think I'd be joking right now?" I asked. "But that's impossible..." Taylor said, her eyes were red, and there were tears stains down her cheeks.

"When did it happen?" Chris demanded. "Um...r-right before I had gone to see Emily in the hospital, I felt so happy to know she was alive and that... That I had grandparents. It was a small connection to my mom. I was so happy I felt this glowing light and boom, I just knew. I felt... Different," he explained. "I don't know what to say," Chris replied, scratching the back of his head. "But there's more," I answered.

Taylor and Chris stared at me. "He can control water," I said. It took a few seconds. "Just him being a sea whisp is impossible, you controlling water is impossible, and get this," he let out a strangled laugh, "it's actually both of your that can control water," he finished, pacing around his hands on his head.

Turning to me he strides forward. "What are you?" He asked. "I don't know,"

He looked me on the eyes and put his hand on my chin. I hesitated, but he moved my face around until my right ear faced him. He put his hand behind my ear, touching my skin. But for some reason I felt an odd sensation and gasped. He let go and my hand shot up to where he was before. I felt three small lines, like... Gills. There was the same ones on the left side, too.

Chris did the same with Jacob and Jacob gasped as well. "You guys are sea whisps, all right..." He said, looking at us with concern. "What are... They?" Jacob said, still recovering his breath. "Well they're not really gills,"

I sighed with relief. "Sea whisps need more oxygen than humans. Those give us the extra oxygen. It's hard to explain-"

"No," I interrupted, "sorry... No, I understand. We breathe in most of our oxygen through our nose, along with air. But the... Gills... Filter the air around it and collect more oxygen. I'm also guessing it's the same in the water," I said. Chris looked dumbfounded. Taylor was wide eyed, "wha..."

"I don't give you as much credit as you deserve," Jacob admitted. "How did you figure it out?" Chris asked. "...I don't know..." I admitted. Honestly, it just felt right.

I stumbled forward, "this way," I said. Chris gently touched my shoulder. I felt chills at his touched and turned to him. His face was worried, and he opened his mouth as if to say something but pulled back, like he swallowed the words.

Taylor smoothed her dark green shirt and jeans, her light blue converse nervously tapping the floor. "Which way?" She asked. Jacob and I led them down a hallway, it's dim lights revealing the small hallway. It was extremely cramped but the ceilings were huge. I would look up every so often but soon be blinded by the lights.

By the end of the hallway (I'm guessing) the lights weren't working and pure darkness lay ahead. I bravely took a step forward, being the leader. I just hope no one saw how much I shook.

We went on in silence for five minuted, trudging along in the thick darkness. Every step I had the feeling I would crash into something. About a minute later I did.

My face slammed into a surface, a very rusty surface. I sputtered and wiped rust particles off. Jacob crashed behind me, with Chris and Taylor in tow. I was again slammed into the door, followed by everyone's unhappy remark.

"Ouch!"

"Watch it!"

Along with a few grunts and unintelligible words. I rolled my eyes. "What are you guys, five?!" I whisper screamed. I pushed the rusty door but it wouldn't budge.

"What's the hold up?" Taylor asked. I paused.

"It's stuck,"

"Aww!"

"We're all going to die!"

"Ugh!"

"Shhhhh!" I hissed. "Jacob move next to me," he did as I said. "Alright one of you guys go to Jacob, one to me. Push when I say," I said. I felt Chris's hands on my back. "When?" He whispered. "Now!" I replied. We pushed and the door clambered open.

Sunlight poured in.
