CHAPTER FIVE

OBLIVIOUS

They spent the whole night 'working on the school project'. In fact, it took Dr Watson popping his head around the door at 11pm to get Peter up and out the door. Otherwise, they could quite happily have spent the whole night in each other's company, laughing, sharing snacks and trying to figure out whatever Peter's father had left behind.

Quite frankly, Myra Jean understood none of it. She did, however, understand that she was starting to develop a crush on Peter Parker. She'd never admit that aloud, obviously, but whenever she thought of him, whenever he looked at her- her heart would flip and twist.

Peter had figured something out though. Myra Jean had no clue what it meant, but Peter was very happy with himself and promised to tell Myra Jean if his discovery led to anything cool. Myra Jean was just happy to have been there. Unfortunately though, reality soon came crashing back down on Myra Jean's head.

She barely got any sleep and woke up late for school. Her father had already left, much to Myra Jean's disappointment. She rushed to get dressed and grabbed her laptop and school work, heading out to the subway.
The high school looms in the greyscale background as Myra Jean speed walks towards the building. Today, was not her day. Flash Thompson was smirking at her as she approached her locker, and as soon as she made eye contact, she knew it was a mistake.

He saunters over to her, leaning against the lockers, "Hey Myra Jean,"

"Hi Flash," She mutters, grabbing her English textbook from her locker and shoving it inside her bag.

"So, I was thinking," Flash says.

"That makes a change," The voice is sudden, and he's so close to her shoulder, his breath blows against her neck when he speaks. Myra Jean turns her head and see's Peter Parker standing over them.

"What did you just say to me?" Flash growls.

"Please don't," Myra Jean says quietly, looking up at Flash, "Just leave,"

Flash glares from Peter to Myra Jean, and as she raises her brows, he rolls his eyes and walks away. Myra Jean turns to Peter and playfully punches his arm.

"Don't do that, Peter," She says, shaking her head, "That guy would gladly knock you out, and you know it,"

"Yeah, but you and I have this...superpower now...I could take him," Peter smiles, "Maybe you could help,"

Myra Jean rolls her eyes, but can't stop smiling up at him, "My hero,"

He grabs his chest dramatically, "You flatter me,"

Peter's eyes shift from Myra Jean and his smile widens when he see's Gwen Stacy walking along the corridor. Myra Jean sighs out loud, he liked her. And Myra Jean liked him. Gwen Stacy walks up to them both and smiles politely.

"Myra Jean, how are you?" She asks. Myra Jean nods.

"I'm okay, thanks Gwen," The red-head replies, "Actually, we need to talk, about your star student of the month interview,"

"Oh, yeah of course," Gwen nods, "How about at lunch?"

"Okay," Myra Jean nods.

"Peter, walk with me?" Gwen asks, smiling widely at him. Myra Jean watches with jealous anxiety flooding her mind as Peter smiles and walks away side by side with Gwen Stacy. He hadn't even said bye to Myra Jean. She watches as Peter laughs, his head dipping towards Gwen's and their hair brushes against each other. Myra Jean almost felt sick. She slams her locker shut and thinks of the most extreme thing she can. Then she turns on her heel and goes to find Flash Thompson.

Flash Thompson was sitting with his group of friends in the courtyard, they looked up with raised brows when Myra Jean approached and stopped in front of Flash. He meets her eyes and she smiles.

"I'm sorry about before," She says, his friends smirk.

"Don't worry about it," Flash shrugs, then he stands up, towering over Myra Jean, "I'm not interested in you anyway,"

Myra Jean's smile falters, she feels her cheeks going red. "I'm not interested in you either, Flash,"

"Uhm-hm," He nods, smirking like a shark, "You keep telling yourself that,"

"MJ?"

Myra Jean's head turns immediately at the rarely used nickname. Peter is stood with his hands in his pockets, watching with squinted eyes, a look of betrayal on his face. Gwen Stacy is stood at his side, holding her books in her arms, her brows raised slightly. In a way, Myra Jean couldn't believe they were ever friends- they were so different to each other.

"You know what, Flash? You're an asshole. You're the biggest bully in the school and what does it get you? Nothing. Nothing at all," Myra Jean's words are sharp and she knows they cut deep, "Even your friends laugh at you behind your back,"

Flash glances at his friends, who were all sniggering about Myra Jean's insult. Flash looks at the floor, quickly grabs his backpack and rushes off towards the school building.

"And you are all just as bad," Myra Jean tells the left behind boys, "All of you need to grow up and consider that people have things going on outside of school that you have no idea about!"

"MJ, c'mon," Peter says, he places a hand on her shoulder and she shrugs out of his grasp.

"Leave me alone, Peter," She mutters, not even meeting his gaze and then walks as fast as her feet will take her, towards her first class. Her heart races in her chest as tears begin to spill down her cheeks. She'd been feeling so emotional lately- about Peter, Gwen, her father, Warren- everything was getting her down and angry. Her whole life felt like it was crumbling before her and yet no one else seemed to be noticing. Plus she'd been bitten by an experimented on spider and still she didn't know the full side affects of it. Maybe all her pent up emotions were the side affects. Myra Jean was breaking from the inside out and everyone was oblivious.
