Getting Closer

Of course Arin and Danny were reprimanded for public intoxication in the workplace but they were too important and knew too much to fire.

Henrik just scolded them, telling them it better not happen again or he'd turn THEM back into interns.

But it was Saturday now and Sammie had the weekend not to think about work.

Currently, she was at a nearby diner nursing her hangover with a nice big breakfast with a cheesy egg omelet, a side plate full of bacon and sausage, pancakes with strawberry syrup and a glass of tea. She'd pound down some coffee but she didn't handle caffeine all that well.

As she ate, she glossed over her phone and came across some video of the city's vigilante.

'Oh yeah, I remember him' she watched the video in full, impressed.

'There's no way this guy is normal. He's way too strong' she remembered how he took down that robot a couple of weeks ago, 'Looks like he might have some kind of superpowers?'

It was weird to think about but in her line of work. . ..  perhaps it wasn't all that weird.

'Maybe he's an anomaly of some kind?' she thought about it, 'But then wouldn't Iris be investigating him?. . .. Then again, who says we're not? I'm not high at all on the payscale to know all that much'

She decided not to think about it.

Well, that became a little difficult when the vigilante in question happened to walk right in that very diner. The only thing different about him was he wasn't wearing an eye mask over his face.

Sammie nearly spat out her tea when she saw him. He walked up to the front counter for a pickup order but he must have noticed her staring and turned to look at her.

Sammie quickly looked away but it was too late.

The vigilante seemed curious at first and awkwardly creeped over to her by her table, "Uh. . . hey"

Sammie tensed, "Oh. Um. . hi"

"So this is gonna sound weird but. . . . you look familiar" he smiled skittishly, "Do I know you from somewhere?"

She thought about lying but what was the point if he suddenly remembered? Then she'd look like an asshole.

"Actually. . . probably. You uh. . . saved me from a giant robot a couple of weeks ago"

"OH YEAH!" He grinned ear to ear, "I remember now! You're that cute girl that was in a hurry!" he leaned against the booth, "Were you really late for work or did you just not wanna give me your number?"

Sammie snorted, "Sorry about that. I really was late. Got reprimanded and everything"

"At least you're not dead" he pointed out, "I'm glad I got there in time to save you. . .well I mean. . .  I'm glad I'm there to save ALL the people I save." he fixed and cleared his throat.

Sammie shrugged, "I imagine everyone's grateful. I am"

He smiled back at her before remembering his little package, "Well. . . I have to go deliver this but uh. . . what do you say? We're not really in a hurry this time. Can I get your phone number?"

She thought about it. He WAS pretty attractive. . . and strong. . . . and cute.

Why the fuck not?

"Okay" she smiled and took out a pen, writing her number on a napkin.

When she handed it to him, he seemed to be the happiest man in the world, "Sweet! Thanks! I'll uh. . . I'll call ya sometime. Maybe we can set up a date and eat hungover together"

She blinked, "Wait, how'd you-"

"I know what a next day after a party meal looks like." he winked, "I'll text ya later. I gotta go deliver this before it gets cold"

With that, he turned around and left, that big grin still plastered on his face.

She watched him go and he LEAPED up onto the top of a nearby building.

'Yup. . . definitely super powers'

Suddenly she got a text message and she looked at her phone to see a strange number.

'Just checking to make sure you gave me your real number'

She wanted to mess with him a little.

'Nah, sorry man, this is Bob'

There was no answer for a few seconds but she didn't want to hurt him.

'Just kidding. Yeah, this is the girl. My name's Sammie'

After a quick second, he texted back, 'Don't scare me like that! XD My name's Jackie in case you forgot.'

'How could I forget the name of my favorite hero?' she flirted. . when in reality she did in fact forget what his name was.

Jackie hearted her message and left the conversation at that.

Sammie finished her meal and saved some leftovers for later. She considered going back to her apartment but then again. . ..  maybe she should get used to staying at Iris? See what it's like to spend the day or night off there?

With all the pay she was going to get, she figured it best not to leave her apartment. What if she wanted to bring a cute guy there for the night? She couldn't do that living full time at Iris. . .

In the end, she decided to go back to Iris. She still hadn't seen her own private room yet after all.

In fact, she still had no idea where to go.

Sammie was wandering the halls until she realized she made a grave error, 'I should have asked the front desk lady'

When she turned a corner, she was unprepared to fully collide with someone else.

She gasped and the both of them fell to the ground, papers flying everywhere.

"Ah scheisse!" The man scoffed, "Watch where you're going!"

Sammie reddened in embarrassment realizing she had just run into HENRIK!

"Oh my god! I'm so sorry sir!" she quickly grabbed most of his papers for him while he was adjusting his glasses, "I got this. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to-"

"Oh, it's just you" Henrik sighed and stood up. He propped his glasses farther up the bridge of his nose, "It's quite alright. I didn't mean to lash out."

For a moment, she spotted something on one of the documents that mentioned 'Sam' the eyeball, "Are these about Sam?"

Henrik grabbed the documents from her, ". . .In a way. It doesn't matter. They are just hypotheses." he stacked them back together all neat, "Shouldn't you be out of the building today? It's the weekend."

"Well, I was but. . ." Sammie shrugged, "I realized I've never looked at my room here so I figured I'd come back to check it out"

Henrik seemed surprised, "Arin never showed you?"

She shook her head, "He was gonna last night but well .. . he was drunk"

Henrik shrugged his shoulders, "Checks out. . . well, I'm taking a break anyway. I'll show you myself"

"Oh, you don't have to!" She squeaked, "I don't wanna bother you!"

He chuckled a little, "It's no bother, really. Besides, it'll give us a little opportunity to get to know each other. Come with me now. You're way off"

"I figured" she snorted.

Henrik folded his papers nicely and put them in his satchel he wore over his shoulder, "I'm interested if there's something special about you. Why else would 'Sam' choose you to communicate with?"

"Honestly, I'm just as stumped as you" Sammie hummed, "I don't think there's anything special about me. I just talked to it is all"

"There must be more to it, though" Henrik thought out loud, "Perhaps you've been in contact with some other anomaly before and just didn't realize it? Or maybe it could be something as simple as liking your voice. Hard to believe the thing has hearing, though since it has no ears. And it shouldn't be able to smell you, either" he rambled on.

Sammie shrugged it off again, "Well, it IS an anomaly for a reason. Maybe it just thought I was funny being drunk and all"

Henrik took a moment to think about it, "Maybe. In any case, you'll be close at hand figuring these things out. I'll be watching the cameras from time to time. You'll write everything down. Every movement it makes and why. Log everything. Got it?"

"Yes sir" Sammie did have a burning question in her mind, though, "By the way, sir"

"Just call me Schneep"

She figured that was an odd nickname but sure.

"Um. . .Schneep. . .. I ran into Jackieboyman again today"

"Jackie-what?" he asked but quickly waved it off, "Oh, yes, yes. The vigilante. What about him?"

"Well. . . I was wondering. Wouldn't HE be considered some type of anomaly? What with his superpowers and all?"

Henrik shook his head, "No. His instance was coincidental. An accident created from a machine at one of my other labs in town"

Her eyes widened, "Wait so. . . one of your machines basically MADE him a superhero?!"

"Don't get too excited" he stopped her, "It was just a fluke and nothing more. Plus, it's confidential. Can't say much. Maybe you could get HIM to talk about it, though, sometime"

"Huh?"

Henrik smirked at her, "I may be a nerd and a hermit but I'm not blind. You blushed when you mentioned his name"

She blushed again, "Well. . I uh . . ."

"We're here" he stopped her.

Indeed, they were.

Henrik had led her to a white door that looked like all the rest except her door had a different number on it.

"Your keypad number should be your birthday" the doctor mumbled to her.

She typed in the number on the keypad and the door unlocked. When she walked in, the lights automatically turned on and her eyes widened.

"Oh what the hell!? This room is even bigger than my bedroom back home!"

There was a large bed with fresh sheets and pillows, what appeared to look like fake windows on the walls, a couch, large flatscreen TV and a fridge including two dressers, a desk with her own laptop sitting on it, a walk-in closet and a fancy bathroom. It was like a 5 star hotel room that she could live in for free!

"THIS IS AWESOME!"

Henrik smirked, "They all do say that" he watched her as she comically flopped her back on the soft bed, "You can also call the cafeteria to place an order. You'd have to go get it yourself but it was at least be ready for you to pick up"

"This is so cool"

Henrik was secretly delighted that she was so happy with everything. He had met a lot of employees that seemed rather ungrateful so he attitude was very refreshing.

"Bet you're wishing you had come here sooner, yes?"

"Oh definitely!" she giggled, "But uh. . . I was wondering. . ..  what are the rules on-"

"You cannot bring anyone in here that is not an employee" Henrik already knew what she was trying to ask.

"I wasn't gonna-"

"You were" he argued, "Well, if that's all, I'll take my leave now. Feel free to come in and out of this room as you wish. I'll see you for work Monday morning."

She sat up on the bed and raised a brow at him curiously, "You will?"

He nodded, "As of Monday, you will no longer be Arin's intern" he informed her,  "You'll be mine"

That night, Sammie stayed the night at Iris to get herself used to the new surroundings.

Perhaps that was a bad idea. . . not that she'd notice.

In the dead of night somewhere else in the building, the eyeball, Sam, was floating in the tank.

Staring at nothing.

Or so it seemed.

He didn't just see normally, after all.

No, he was watching something.

Someone.

Through the walls and doors, his 'eye' traveled. He wasn't confined to his tank.

A shadow moved into Sammie's room.

He stared calmly.

Watching her sleep.
