Part 8

Alex knew the day he left the room something is happening with Henry but he didn't care much seeing he is more looking forward to his trip back home. He promised himself he would call to check on him. He never trusted Henry when he says that he's alright. Little part in him knows something might happened that made him so upset and he wonder if it's his family or is it something else.

He and Nora ride the same cab to the airport before they both parted in two different flights. Nora is headed to New Orleans to see her family while Alex headed to Austin. Few hours later and he already arrived and as soon as he exited the arrival gate, he saw June holding on to a board written with colorful loves and glitters that says;

"Welcome Home baby bro!"

He laughs at the sign and immediately dragged his luggage with him for her hug. "I miss you!" June hugged him tight in her arm as he returned the same. It almost felt like he never left home seeing her jumping in excitement for his returned. "Where's mum?" He asks seeing it's only her at the airport and her smile dropped, "Home, waiting for you." She says and wrapped her arms around Alex's elbow dragging him out from the airport towards the parking lot.

"So? Have you met anyone? Tell me everything." June starts as soon as they rolled out from the parking lot headed to the freeway. Alex smiled widely putting on his sunglasses over his face and taps on his phone for a photo. "This is Henry, my roommate. And that is Nora, my best friend." He starts letting June steal glances over his phone before turning her focus back on the road.

"Damn! Your roommate is hella cute. Is he-?" She asks knowing well of Alex sexuality and he shook his head at her. "Nah, Henry is different. He's from London. He's uhm- he's still in a closet, I think." Alex says earning June a sharp glanced before turning her gaze back to the road. "What do you mean? Is he or isn't he?" She asks and Alex laughs, "I don't think Henry knew who he is yet. But he's getting there." June can see Alex is so smitten talking about Henry and she nudge his arm with her elbow earning Alex another wide smile.

It took them an hour to arrive at their estate home here in Austin and the moment June's car pulled up at the front yard, Alex can see his mum came out holding a towel in her hand. He literally jumps out from the car and ran towards her hug that he had missed for so long. The scent she carried brought back memories of them during his childhood.

Her warmth, her smile and the way her hair brushing towards Alex's cheek felt everything better and he can see she is doing well for herself. She is radiant and she is more happier right now seeing him back home. "I miss you so much." Alex says wrapping his arm around her neck and she smiles at her son, "I miss you too. Come on!" She yelled towards June and him to enter and as Alex did, the smell of roasted potatoes and the turkey cooking in the oven brought nothing but blessing in his heart. He is home.

It wasn't until his eyes landed at the person stood in the middle of his house and his smile dropped. "Who the hell are you?" He asks and Ellen smacked him over his arm, "Language." She scolded him and Alex had his eyebrow crooked into a line. "Who is he?" He asks and he saw the guy holding out a glass of champagne in his hand and handed to Alex. "My name is Oscar, Oscar Diaz and I'm - uhh.." He stops before Alex can see his mother wrapped her arms around the guy's waist, "Oscar is my date for the evening." She continued and Alex eyes widen at their words. "I'm sorry what??" He half yelled and June was halfway inside their home when Alex shot her a look, "Did you know about this?" He asks her and she sighed desperately knew how he's gonna react.

"I live here, of course I knew." She adds and Alex cocked his eyes at the guy with his hand over his waist. He denied his offer for the champagne earlier and the guy politely handed it to Ellen. "Look, Alex I know you feel awful about me dating but darling, I'm a grown woman, I can handle myself." Ellen defends earning Alex a scoffed.

"Handle yourself? Did you forget how terrible your divorce is that your children had to pick up the pieces and took care of you instead?" Alex starts raising his voice at her and June had to step in between them. "I am your mother and you are not to speak to me that way?" Ellen yells back, and Alex scoffed at her. "My mother? You were my mother when you stumbled in drunk in the middle of the school night waking me up to bake cakes so you could smashed it to the wall and have me cleaned up your shit!"

"ALEX!" June yelled at him and he can finally see that it was uncalled for telling the stranger in their home about his mother demise. "I think I better leave." Oscar says placing down his glass of champagne on the table but Alex stopped him. "NO! Don't fucking leave yet, you need to see how dysfunctional this family is before you want to date my mother. Stay. Enjoy the show." Alex says and Oscar was contemplating whether he should stay or leave.

Ellen on the other hand had tears running down her face before she headed back to the kitchen to finish her cooking while Oscar followed her.

June smacked Alex on his arm hard, hard enough for him to yelp in pain and shot her a death glare. "What the fuck?! Ten minutes and you already making problem? Show some respect Alex!" June whispered yelled at him and he clenched his jaw tight at her. "You could have at least gives me a fucking heads up June! What the fuck?" He yelled back and June huffed shaking her head at her brother.

"Look, Oscar is nice. We have been talking and I really thinks he loves mum greatly. So stop being an asshole and stops making this Thanksgiving be our last time to spend together!" She smacked Alex's bag pack over his chest and Alex groaned when it hit him hard.

Alex saw June stomped her way upstairs to her room and she can hear the clanking over the kitchen before he decides to head out and get some air.

Alex was furious to see his mum dating again. The last time she was in a relationship made her so vulnerable that Alex thought he almost lost her from his life. Now she is dating again and he bet that this guy isn't gonna be any different and Alex is the one that had to deal with.

As he headed to the lake side and sit himself down by the grass covered ground, he can't help fuming at the sight of Oscar in his home pretending that he owns the place. Alex sighs pulling out his phone and his thumb hovers over the screen before he pressed on the call button and waited for the line to connect.

"Hello?" Henry's voice sounded so sleepy and he wonders why is he asleep at this hour. "S-sorry to disturb you." He says and he heard rustling over the other line and he bet Henry sit up leaning against his bed rest like he used to do when he's talking with Alex. The gentleman in him refused to talk to another person while he lays in bed like a dead man.

"Alex? Are you alright?" He asks and Alex can feel something stuck in his throat before he could say further. "Uhm, yeah. Are you? The last time I saw you, I thought you were crying." Alex tried to avoid the fact that he needed someone to talk to distract himself from the situation at his home. Henry was silenced for a while and it got him worried. "Hen? Everything okay?" He asks and Henry inhaled sharply before he replied. "Yeah! I just can't wait to go home." He says and Alex found his tone too cheery to believe but he let it aside thinking that Henry does talks about going back to London for weeks now and it's all he could ever think off.

"Now, tell me why did you call? Don't expect me to believe that you missed me already?" He asks and Alex snickered a smiled at his words.

"Well, maybe I do then." He says and Henry got silenced again and Alex regretted saying that to him.

"Bull! What do you want Alexander? Tell me or I'll hang up!" Henry forced and Alex loves when Henry called him by his full name. Ever since he was a kid, he always finds his name to be intimidating to live up to the great legend of the past and somehow Alex felt the burden of being called Alexander or even Alejandro.

"Things at home didn't go as I expected. I'm pissed now." He simply state and he can hear Henry breaths steadily over the speaker. "How so?" He asks and Alex sighed again. "My mum start dating." He hear Henry scoffed before he did his small laughs that made Alex's heart flutters. "What?" Alex asks.

"Don't get me started on dating mums. You remember how I tell you about my mum dating arse guys then expect her children to be normal?" Henry adds and Alex smiles, "Well does your mum ever brought a date to the Thanksgiving dinner?" He asks him and Henry silently thinking before he answered him. "Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, you name it. The highlight of our lives is when she called one of her boyfriend her dead husband name and I never sees a man ran so fast." Alex knew Henry never meant to tell him that story when he suddenly went silent and for once, he wished he was there to hug him.

"Hen? Are you alright?" He asks and Henry cleared his throat before he answered, "Yeah, it's all in the past." Henry short answered signed that he is trying to avoid the question but before Alex could say further, Henry interrupted him. "Give him time Alex, maybe he is worth all the men out there." He says and Alex smiled crept up on his lips. "Worth than you?" He knows Henry probably blushing by now but he couldn't care less. He loves teasing him.

"No man worth more than me. I'm defective remember?" Alex silent upon hearing Henry's words. How can someone so handsome and so smart is so insecure and so humble down to earth like Henry, Alex thought. "You're not defective, you're just lost. I'm sure someone will come along and fix you." Alex tried to cheer him up but the only thing he could hear was Henry scoffing at him. "Well that someone better come prepared cause I'm not easy." Henry defends and Alex laughs, "Maybe the knight is closer than you think. You never know." Alex teases and he loves when Henry laughs at his joke, "Don't count on it sweetheart. Fairytale only exist in the book or movies." Alex heart flutters at the sound of Henry's voice calling him sweetheart but he can actually smiles knowing he won't be able to see it.

"One can dream, right?" Alex asks and he can feel Henry smiling while holding on to his phone. They both went silent and somehow neither one of them were saying anything until Henry finally broke the sound barrier in between them.

"Happy holidays Alex. I'll see you in two weeks." He says and Alex nods,

"I'll see you Henry." They both ended the call and the moment he did, June yelled behind him telling him dinner is ready. He groaned not wanting to go back into the house but Henry is right, he can't judge this person without knowing him. Maybe he is a good guy and he is worth getting to know him.

The moment Alex went inside his home and stood by the kitchen, his eyes widen at the sight of food over their table. "Dinner is served." Oscar says holding out his palm out for them and Alex was to stun to speak. "Alejandro, your mother told me how much you love pozole when you visited your grandmother in Mexico. So I thought you would try my recipe and I hoped you like it." He placed the dish down on table next to the turkey and Alex can almost smell the meat stew coming from the steaming pot.

Ellen was right, Alex loves his grandmother pozole and how he missed it but since her passed, they never had this kind of dishes anymore as good as hers.

Alex wanted to rebel, to ignore this Oscar guy for the rest of the night but somehow his stomach growled at the smell of the food placed before them so he took a seat eventually letting him carved the turkey, reciting grace and prayers for blessing and thankful for having them all here. For once, Alex felt nice, he really felt that they are a family and seeing his mum smiling happily like this, made him feel bad for yelling at her earlier.

"Hellooooo." A sudden familiar voice came by the front door and both Alex and June turned their head sharply towards the sound and saw their father came in with a bottle of whiskey in his hand and he wore this leather jacket he used to wear even before his divorce. "DAD!" Alex yelled running towards him and hugged the life out of him.

It has been a while since he sees his dad and June runs for her hug as well after Alex. "We miss you! Why didn't you tell us you're coming?" Alex asks and Leo stares at Ellen standing up from her seat next to Oscar. "Your mother didn't tell you?" He asks and they both turned to look at her. "No, wait, why did you invite dad here?" Alex asks and Ellen took a deep breath before she released and her hand tangled in Oscar's next to her. "Why don't we all eat and we can talk later." Ellen says and Leo pulled out his jacket before he tossed by the chair in the living room and headed to the dining room taking his seat but before he did, he eyed Oscar and handed out his hand for him.

"I'm Leo. Her ex husband, father of these two amazing brats." He ruffled Alex curly hair before taking his seat and Oscar can see where Alex got his charming smile and his tall dark curly figure from. "Oscar, Ellen's partner." He introduced himself and Leo eyebrow crooked, "Partner as in you're in the real estate or partner as in her boyfriend?" Ellen darted a death glare towards her ex husband and couldn't help clenched her jaw at him.

"Oh relax hun, or you're gonna pop that vein on your forehead if you don't." Leo teased her and she sat down gulping her wine in a swift and Leo whistled at her gesture, "Woah, I thought you're sober?" He grabbed the bread from the basket before he passed it around the table and Alex and June eyed them in between although Leo and Oscar is at the head of the table across from each other but the heat coming from them is radiating. Alex can see how upsetting this is for his mother but he was so happy that his father is here.

"Dad did you still ride that hog?" Alex asks seeing his father still wearing that same leather jacket on and he wonders. "Hell yeah, the only state I could go around enjoy the fresh air is here, home. New York is too crowded and too dangerous to ride the motorbike. Speaking of which, I'm upset that you didn't choose NYU. We could stay together." His father said and Alex knows how much it means to him for Alex to stay in New York but he knows it would kill his mother if he did. So he decides that he choose neither of their choices and got accepted to Stanford instead.

"Well, Stanford is nice too. Plus California is better. Better weather, better people." He says and Leo adds, "You mean better laid." Alex hides his smirked knowing how this is quite awkward seeing how his father cheated on his mother and he knew topic of sex and partners is something he wished they won't talk about. Ellen on the other hand is poking through her dinner like it was Leo's face on it and Oscar noticed she was already on her third glass of wine.

"I must say I'm surprised you invited me here El. Don't tell me you're selling the house." He says and both Alex and June turned sharply at her. "You're selling the house?!" They both yelled at the same time and Ellen sighed shaking her head. "I am not! Why would you think I would do that?" She asks and Leo smirked at her discomfort. "Why did you call me here then. Mustn't be out of your blessed heart to invite your ex husband for a dinner with your new boo." Leo teased shoving the meat inside his mouth and he moaned at the taste.

"That is delicious Oscar. Not the best like my mum used to make but it was alright." Oscar smiles painfully knowing it wasn't actually a compliment but Leo is well known to belittle someone only by his words. "Tell me, did your wife teach you how to made this? Or do you cook for yourself?" He asks shoving more meat into his mouth and Alex can feel the heat in between these two.

"As the matter of fact, mi madre. Just like yours, I'm sure she is- proud of you." Oscar toned made Leo drops his spoon over the plate and it clanked loudly. Alex witness how his father starts to throw everything out from his mouth onto the plate and wiped his mouth with the napkin before he gulped his whiskey bottle without even bothered pouring it into the glass.

"Taste horseshit to me." He says and Ellen had enough. She smacked the table and stood abruptly throwing a death glare towards Leo by the end of the table. Alex jumps at her sudden gesture throwing his appetite out from the room. "Enough Leo! Just stop, both of you!" She yelled and June sighed not wanting to watch this anymore. She stood up and almost left before her wrist caught by Leo stopping her.

"Come on June bug, spend some time with your daddy." He batted his eyes at her and she pulled her wrist back running upstairs to her bedroom. Alex wanted to follow her but somehow all of these making him stay in his seat. "What the hell is going on? Why are you really here?" Alex finally asks and Ellen slowly sat down on her chair before Oscar took her hand in his again.

"We have some news." Ellen says staring at Oscar's face beside her and both Leo and Alex stared at each other before turning their gaze back at Ellen and Oscar. "Lord! Don't tell me you're pregnant! You're too old to be carrying a child anyway." Leo snide making Ellen shot him another look. "Who the hell do you think you are to tell me I'm too old to carry a child?" Ellen barks and Leo laughs at her sipping into his whiskey again.

"Well all you did is complaint during pregnant and said you are too old for this shit. Why start now?!" Ellen stood abruptly again grabbing the bread from the basket and tossed it at Leo on the end and he managed to dodge it so she took another before Oscar stops her. "Let's not wasted food shall we." He took the bread from her grip and placed it on his plate while Alex witnessed them acting like a child in front of their own child.

"We are getting married." Oscar helps her by ending this banter and the moment he did, both Leo and Alex drops their glasses on the table and it spilts over the cover that made the room silenced and colder in a second.

"You what?" Alex asks crunching his face in disbelief and Ellen smiles before fixing her blonde hair behind her ear. "Uhm, it's true. Oscar proposed and I said yes. You don't have a problem with that right Leo?" She asks but almost like gloat at him but he shook his head gulping more whiskey. "Nope, he can deal with your shit for all I care. I dodge the bullet, I suggest you did the same my friend." Leo says before he stands and it angered Ellen when he said it.

"You bastard!" She grabbed the plate and start throwing at him but yet again he dodge the aim and it hits the wall behind him and shattered to pieces on the floor. "You have been nothing but my misery and my suffering for all the years of our marriage and you dare to say you dodge the bullet?! Twenty years, twenty fucking years! And all you had to stay is dodge the fucking bullet?!" Ellen threw another plate at him and again he dodge but Oscar tries to stop her from ruining her home and cause harm on any of them especially Alex.

"See. I told you." Leo says and it made her more infuriated before throwing another glass towards him. Leo hurriedly grabbed his jacket before he turned to look at Alex still sitting in between them in a mess over the table and Alex turned to look at his father with redness in his eyes, "I'm sorry kiddo but I had to go. See you when I see you okay?" Leo says before he headed out and slammed the door of his exit. Alex turned his gaze back towards his mother crying at the end of the table while Oscar coaxed her and Alex finally stood.

"Alex, I'm so sorry." Ellen says and Alex could only swallowed his throat dryly at her. "Don't bother about me. It's not like you could ruined my life any further." Alex says before he left the dining room and headed to his bedroom locking himself inside instead.

.

The house was silent when Alex finally left his room holding his luggage that he barely unpacks yesterday and slowly climbed down the stairs towards the front door. He stopped when he passed by the dining room and saw the food was left untouched but the glass that was shattered all over the floor was now cleaned and he knows it was Oscar who did it. His mother would have passed out drunk after what happened last night and that is the reason why he intended to leave and headed back to Stanford himself.

He knew his decision is wrong for leaving without any words but he was too upset to even talk to anyone and he knew Henry is gone for London by the time he arrived and he will be all alone through two weeks holiday but he prefers it that way. He rather stayed alone than being in this messed up family any longer.
