Part 77

Couple of days later Alex noticed the changes in both Henry and Luke. it's not just that they both refused to speak to each other, they had Alex used for middle spoke person. Alex worried about Henry more since he could feel Henry is hiding something from him but each time he asks, Henry would dismissed him like usual.

He stares at the windows of his office with his hand in his pants pocket leaning against the brick wall when his thought was interrupted by his father knocking on the door. "Bud. Everything alright?" Alex turned his gaze to face the guy admiring the years that had gotten in him with grey hair and wrinkled skin.

"Hey paps." Alex smiled before he walked back to his desk and grabbed the chair to sit. "This came for ya." Oscar handed him a brown enveloped and Alex eyebrow furrows before his eyes caught at the name over the paper.

"I can't believe it." He whispered earning Oscar attention. "What is it?" He asks and Alex tore the enveloped opened before he read the words written on the paper. "Couple of weeks ago, Luke had nightmares." Alex starts and Oscar sat on the chair facing him.

"Again? It has been years since he had one. What triggered?" He asks concerned. "I don't know but he kept mentioning his mum. So I hired this private investigator to search for her burial site and they found it." He handed the papers towards Oscar by the table before he grabbed his phone beside his laptop. "I gotta tell Henry about this." He says.

Oscar pulls out his reading glasses that he hated how he depends on it to read now and Alex always laughed when he uses them.

"So back in Massachusetts?" Oscar asks with Alex humming his answer. He had his phone pressed on his ear waiting for it to answer but later clicked his tongue at the disappointment. "Henry's not answering his phone." He says and taps on the screen to send him a message.

"Is everything alright at home?" Oscar asks taking his glasses off and leaned back on the chair with his leg crossed. He sensed something is up between these two when Alex was not himself.

"Henry's been off lately. Dunno whether it's because of the fight he had with Luke or something else. Each time I tried to talk to him, he would shut me down like always." Alex says before pressing his phone for another call.

"You know Henry better than any of us mijo. If you feel something is up that means something is up." Oscar says and noticed Alex clicked his tongue again when another call failed. "Henry where the fuck are you? Pick up the damn phone!" He yelled over his voicemail and starts dialing another number again before pressing it over his ear.

"Hey Emily, is Henry there?" He spoke again.

Alex called Henry's assistant at the shelter to find out if he's there. He was supposed to be there since he told him that yesterday. But to his disappointment Henry didn't show up at the shelter like he promised so he thanked her before tapping another on the screen. He was already on his feet again pacing behind his desk with Oscar staring at him concerned.

"Buddy are you at home?" He asks Luke knowing he might be at school but it's already almost four in the evening and Luke should be home by now.

"Nah paps, I'm at the library. Why? Do you need something?" He asks him back.

"No bud, have you spoken to your dad today?" Alex asks and Luke could hint worry in his voice.

"Uh- no. Why? What happened?" Luke's toned changes and Alex didn't want to worry him if not for anything.

"PAPS?! Tell me what's wrong?" Luke voice raised when he noticed the silenced between them.

"I-I don't know, your dad is not answering his phone. I don't know where he is." Alex could hear rustling from Luke's side and the heaviness in his breath.

"I'm coming home. I'll text you when I found him." Luke says frantic and Alex sighed internally slapping himself for dragging Luke into this.

"I'll see you at home." Alex continued before ended their call and his eyes locked with his father staring at him across the desk with worry in his eyes. "Come on. I'll drive." Oscar says standing up from the chair while Alex put on his black coat over his body.

"Paps no. You go home and I'll text you if something is wrong. I don't want to worry ma and don't tell her anything until I call." Alex says grabbing his keys and his phone in his hand.

"Alright but text me as soon as you find him." Oscar followed Alex out of the office before he runs towards the exit. "God in heaven, please let him be alright."

Oscar prays silently under his breath watching as Alex pushed his long legs towards the exit with his heart beating in his chest.

.

Luke was practically running towards exit of his school library after he apologized to the group of student he was tutoring before grabbing his stuffs and ran out. He booked an Uber as he waited pacing outside on the streets waiting for the car to arrive. He taps on his phone for his dad's number and waiting for him to pick up.

But same like Alex, he grunted in disappointment when he only heard his father's voice in the voicemail. "Dad, you're scaring me. I have called you so many times. Where the hell are you? Please, please pick up." Luke's voice breaks as he begs him in the voicemail.

"Dad I'm sorry okay. I'm so sorry. Just- please, please be okay." He whimpers pressing his palm over his mouth muffling the tears that threatened to spill.

He felt sense of relief when the Uber he booked arrived seconds later. He hopped in and offers the guy extra tips if he could get him faster than the estimated time which he agrees.

It only took him about twenty minutes to reach home in usual timing but somehow the Uber managed to get him in ten which he was delighted and thankful for his effort. He won't deny how worried Luke were at the back seat tapping on his phone with his eyes glistened in tears. "Are you gonna be alright? Do you want me to wait here?" The Uber driver asks as soon as they both reached Luke's home. Luke shook his head thanking him with a fake smile. "I'll be fine, thank you."

The moment Luke barged into the front door of his home only to find it is empty. "Dad?!" He yelled frantically searching for him across the living room before he went into the kitchen but only to find it empty as well. "DAD!" He yelled again but no respond. The house is eerily quiet and Luke hated this feeling inside his chest.

He run up the stairs into his parents bedroom yelling out Henry's name. "DAD!" He yelled again storming into their bedroom only to find it was also empty. He noticed the half made bed and the never ending buzzing of his dad's phone on the table side with his father's wide smiling face on the screen. Luke ignored the call and wanted to find Henry and that is more important right now.

"Dad." He called as he stepped closer into the bathroom when he noticed the door is closed but his heart races inside his chest in hope that Henry is there.

"Dad?" He called again as he pushed the door opened and the horror flashes his eyes when he sees Henry sprawled on the floor with his eyes close. "DAD! OH GOD!" He rushed to Henry side cradling his head from the floor before pressing his finger over the side of Henry's neck. The threading uneven pulse underneath his skin made Luke sighed in relief before he noticed Henry's eyes flutters to open.

A groaned escaped his throat before his eyes flutters more to open and the moment he saw Luke cradling him on his lap with tears in his eyes, his furrowed brows softened. "Luke- what happened?" Henry asks with a croak voice. He tried to raise himself but Luke stopped him.

"Dad stay, stay. Imma call paps first alright." He say pulling out his phone from his pocket but Henry took his phone from Luke's hand.

"N-No don't." He forced himself up from the floor before his knees wobbled almost stumbling forward knocking his face on the counter but luckily Luke caught him in time.

"Dad, you're not fine. Please. We need to go to the hospital." Luke helped Henry up from the floor by his elbow before he placed his arm over Luke's shoulder. "No Luke, I just need to lie down. Please don't tell your paps anything." Henry begs letting Luke helped him to his bed.

Henry exhaled his breath tiredly the minute he reached his bed with his hand fisted the sheets to pull himself up. His breaths quickened from the steps and he tried to pull the blanket over his body but was too weak to even lift his arm.

"Dad please." Luke begs again taking his seat next to Henry straightening the blanket over his chest. "I'm fine bud. I just got dizzy earlier." Henry lies but Luke couldn't help hiding the tears that fell on his cheek. Henry frowned staring at Luke's guilt ridden face before he cupped his palm over Luke's cheek letting him leaned over his warmth. "I'm fine." He says in a whisper and Luke pressed his trembling lips together letting a tears fell on his cheek.

"HENRY!" Alex barged into the room to find him in bed with teary Luke by his side. "Baby. What is it? Are you alright?" He asks and Luke gave his seat to him while he stood beside Alex. "I got dizzy, that's it." Henry sighed tangling his hand over Alex's trembling one.

"Fuck that. Come on. Let's go to the hospital." He pulled the blanket off Henry's chest and pulled Henry by his arm before he winced in pain that stabbed him in his chest.

"Alex stop." Henry pushed him back but Alex won't take his protest any longer. "Luke start the car." He handed Luke his car key and Luke didn't even question his father's when he realized what he was doing. "What are you doing?" Henry asks but Alex won't accept any argument from him before he slides his arm under Henry's neck and under his knees lifting him up from the bed.

"Taking you to the hospital you jerk!" He carries Henry out from their bedroom with Henry's arm wrapped around his neck. Luke sighed in relief knowing how stubborn his parents are and he was glad for his father's insisting to take his husband to the hospital.

.

"How many days has it been?" Sylvie asks with her hand clutched tightly over her waist. She kept her burning gaze deep into Henry's in bed with the monitors beeping steadily next to him. "Few days." Henry lies and she raised her brow at him. "Weeks, maybe months, I don't know." Henry corrected and she sighed before turning her gaze at Alex and Luke by his side.

"Why didn't you say anything?" Alex asks feeling betrayed and Henry couldn't turned to face him or Luke by his side. Luke had his arm crossed over his chest leaning against the wall by the window while Alex remained seated next to Henry in bed.

"I didn't think it was anything." Henry whispered but Sylvie won't take it as a simple as it was so she orders various test to be done for Henry including echocardiogram and another CT scan.

It took them hours and by the time all the test are done, it was already midnight. Luke fell asleep wrapped in Henry's arm with Alex still seating next to him on the chair with than anguished look in his face. "Love." Henry calls straining his neck from Luke's head pressing into him and Alex lifted his gaze towards him.

Henry just woken up from his sleep while they waited for the test results and Luke joined him in bed knowing how tired they all are.

"Yeah, you need water?" Alex asks figures on the hoarseness in his voice and the repeated swallowing in his throat. Henry nodded weakly before Alex guides the straw over his thick lips watching as he sipped on the cold clear water easing the dryness in his throat. "Better?" He asks and Henry nods thanking him.

They both sighs only the beeping of the monitor and Luke soft snores were heard in the room filling up the silence. "Alex." Henry starts but Alex cuts him off before he could say any further.

"How could you not tell me Hen. We promised each other." Alex whisper letting his head hung low staring at the floor beneath him. "I didn't want to worry you." Henry replied briefly but Alex scoffed at him. "Well look at where we are right now Hen." Henry sighed stroking Luke's back softly not wanting to drag this argument further when Sylvie came into the room with the iPad in her hand.

"Thank God." Alex wished under his breath when he saw her and his raised voice somehow woke Luke up from his sleep.

"Everything is alright with the test?" Luke asks still confused by the time right now but ended up sitting up in bed facing her. "Not exactly." Sylvie says and showed Alex the echo results.

"The valve weakened Hen. We might need surgery to fix this. Otherwise the dizziness and the fainting will continue worsen because your heart isn't strong enough to pump your blood to the rest of your body." Sylvie explained and she could see each faces frowned from Alex's worried one to Luke's almost crying one to Henry already with acceptance of his own mistakes for ignoring it.

"Can you give us a minute." Henry told her and she nods, "You can go home if you want for now. We can reschedule the surgery later." Sylvie says and Henry thanked her.

Alex stayed silence for a while with his back facing Henry. His elbow rested over his knees with his hand clasped over his lips. Luke stares at both of his parents staring into spaces in silenced while he still in bed clueless.

"Are we gonna talk about it or you guys just gonna keep quiet like this for the rest of the night." Luke asks but both of his parents didn't respond to his question. "Bud, can you let me and papi talk for a while, alone?" He asks Luke but before Luke could protest Alex stood up abruptly from his chair with his back still facing Henry.

"No need. I'll get the discharge papers." Alex says wiping his eyes with his fingers. "You don't want to talk about it?" Henry asks softly behind him but Alex shook his head at him. "Not right now." Alex says.

"Alex." Henry called grabbing his wrist but Alex pulled his wrist harshly from Henry's gripped shocking him. "No! I can't talk right now because if I do, I will ended up screaming at you for lying to me for weeks Hen! Weeks!" He couldn't held himself from raising his voice at him.

"Paps. Please." Luke begs seeing how angry Alex got and the fact that he just screamed at Henry's face. "It's okay bud. Why don't you go with paps while I get dressed, alright?" Henry says and Luke contemplate to leave him. "I can help you." He offers but Henry shook his head at him before raising himself up into a sitting position. "It's fine, I'll manage." He says and Luke climbed off the bed following Alex outside before closing on the door with Henry smiling painfully by the bed.

Henry stares at his son closing the door slowly with his husband already disappear behind before he broke in tears. His body shudders into a sobs with hand clutching on his chest trying to ease the pain grew each time when he inhaled a breath.

He wiped his tears with the heel of his palm leaning himself back on the bed. His eyes stares at the dots over the ceiling reflecting back on what Sylvie told him. He had to make a decision in such a short period of time knowing how he had been ignoring himself lately.

The nurse came in to remove the IV's in his arm which Henry's glad since he struggled to change into his own clothes with the IV. He changed into his own clothes by himself while he waited for Alex and Luke to come back before another sobs broke in him. He exhaled through his pursed lips trying to put on a brave facade that he had for years since he had to live with this disease.

Henry sat on the edge of the bed with his hand gripped the edges of the mattress when Luke came in. "Dad, you ready?" He asks and Henry wiped his tears before turning to face him. "Yeah. Where's papi?" Henry asks and Luke sighed pressing his lips together. "Paps told me to get you home. He had to go out to clear his head. I have your meds." He says raising his hand up holding the plastic bag filled with new medications for Henry to take.

Henry couldn't differentiate the pain he's having right now. He thought that his heart is the reason for his pain but right now Alex is the reason. He never meant to break Alex's heart in such way but yet he did. The look on Alex's face when he left the room broke him in million pieces but the moment he turned to look at his son standing by the wheelchair gripping into the handle made him realized that Luke is still in shock, especially when he is the one that found him.

"I have Dad's car, I'm driving us home." Luke says and Henry sighed knowing that no matter what Alex still cares about his little family despite his anger. He also knew that Alex went back to his parents home to clear his head before he's making any rush decision that he might regret later on.

.

Alex was fuming by Henry neglect over his own health and for years they had been together, he had countless time he pushed Henry on not ignoring those sign. "Paps please, don't get angry at dad. I hate when you both fights." Luke expressed his fear next to him as Alex signed the papers discharging Henry. "I can't Luke. For years we had been together and yet your dad still hides stuff behind my back and I felt like a fool." He sighed desperately as he waited for them to handed him the papers.

"Please." Luke's voice broke and it caught Alex's attention when he turned to his side to see his trembling fingers clasped together with his eyes glistened. "Oh Luke." He pulled Luke by his neck into his hug and immediately Luke wrapped his arm around Alex's waist. For years Alex had witnessed him grown from a boy to a man but Luke is always going to be a soft hearted person, just like Henry and he knew it traumatized him when he was the one who found Henry.

"I'm sorry you had to see that buddy." He whispered running his palm over Luke's back to soothe him. Luke had almost the same height as Alex does which annoys Henry to the most even though he only an inch lower than them both. "Sir?" The nurse interrupts them handing the pharmacy slip to Alex for them to collect the medication.

Took them half an hour to get his meds when Alex handed the bag to Luke along with his car keys. "Here, take daddy home." He says running his fingers through his curls. "What about you?" He asks confused. "I need to clear my head. I'm sleeping at abuelo's tonight. Call me if anything." He says as he walked away from Luke still standing by the hallway with his heart dropped deep into his stomach.

Alex was beyond mad at this point and wanted to clear his head as he walked out the hospital. He inhaled his breath deeply before he felt a buzzes coming from his pocket.

He pulled out his phone to see it was Oscar calling him and the time shown was one in the morning. "Paps, I'm so sorry I forgot to call you." He apologized the moment he answered the phone.

"You bet you are! I have been waiting and almost burst out telling your mother. What the hell happened?" Oscar whispered yelled into the speaker and Alex sighed rubbing his palm over his face. "Henry is in hospital." He breaks.

"What happened? Is he alright?" Oscar voice hints worry and Alex took a seat over the stone bench with his phone pressed on his ear.

"He fainted in the bathroom, Luke found him. Scares the hell out of him." Alex says briefly and he could hear his father cursed in the speaker.

"How are they?" He asks and Alex pressed his lips together.

"It's what we feared paps. He has been having pain for weeks and he lied to me. Sylvie says that the valve weakened and he needs another surgery to fix it." Alex could feel his tears start rolling down on his face. "Come home mijo. We'll talk about it." Oscar told him and Alex sighed pressing his finger over his nose bridge. "Okay." He says with his broken voice.

.

The moment Alex stepped out of the cab, he could see the light from his parent's living room is on and the door was opened to reveal Oscar in his night robe tight around his waist. Alex didn't think twice before running into his arm and he broke into a sob.
