Chapter 1
Song: The Night We Met by Lord Huron
I believe that the worst thing that you can do while standing at the edge of the cliff is to not take a leap of faith.
So I did, I jumped.
My heart beat so fast, my rib cage could explode, and as the adrenaline was washing off, I could feel my bones crushing.
And suddenly, the pain was gone and I was staring at the most beautiful scene you could see in a metro city.
Buildings full of light and sky devoid of any.
And as I was staring at the scene, standing at the edge of the balcony, trying to match my breath with the breeze, a tear rolled down my cheek.
Something was missing. The view was beautiful, but I was not. I lacked in every way possible. Not pretty enough, not smart enough, not disciplined enough. I was a mess in every way possible.
And there was no one who would call me if the world were ending today.
---------
The sky was starless and the new moon spared no mercy to the dark canvas. The cloudless sky had no disturbance and reflected the complete opposite of what was going on beneath it.
The skyscrapers had their lights on and the different colours glowed like fireworks. The wind carried the bustling noise of cars honking at each other while the atmosphere looked anything but dark.
A teenage girl with light brown hair and a short height was standing on her toes to stare at the shops on the ground. She leaned against the railing and looked below to nothing in particular.
Her brain was racing with a million thoughts but her mind felt blank. She stared absentmindedly as the wind played with her hair.
The night was silent besides her heartbeats, but she failed to hear the footsteps approaching her.
"What are you thinking?" A familiar voice sai,d and she turned to look at the owner of the voice.
And there he was, standing in a simple white T-shirt and faded black jeans. He was smiling at her as she stood there frozen.
Her body was still as she looked deep into his brown eyes and slowly noticed the mole near his lips.
"Come inside or you'll be cold. " He said.
She wanted to raise her hands and touch his face, but-
"Amy... Amy?" a voice echoed in her ears as she forced her eyes to stay closed. She tried to continue what she was seeing moments ago, but the fragments fell out of her brain's reach.
"Amy, come on... Wake up, " she heard the same voice again, but this time it was clear and loud, confirming that whatever she was seeing was just a dream.
With slow breaths, she tried forcing herself back into the same dream, but when she felt wet liquid flowing down her closed eyes, she let out a sob.
Slowly, she opened her eyes and stared at the wall in front of her. She looked at the walls painted with cheap chemicals, but all she could see was the boy in white.
Tears fell down her cheeks continuously, wetting the pillow she was using.
"A nightmare?" The voice that woke her up asked softly. Glad that she had her back to her friend, Amy didn't try to wipe off her tears.
"Worse. A good one... with him," Amy spoke in a low voice, hoping that her friend won't hear her, but when she felt a hand stroking her hair, she choked on her sob.
"We are going up that hill. Come with us. You need a distraction," Amy's friend Sarah said as she continued stroking her hair.
Amy looked at the damaged wall and bits of paint scraping off it as her tears stopped flowing. Without caring to wipe them, she replied, "You guys can go. I want to stay alone for some time."
Sarah looked at her best friend's face and sighed. That was not the first time Amelia had woken up crying because of him. As much as she wanted her best friend to move on, she also knew how difficult it was for her to accept the truth. But if Amy couldn't accept the truth, how would she be able to fight the tears, to get over him or what he did?
"It's been a year. . ." Sarah began, testing Amy's temper. For it was as unpredictable as a tsunami how she would behave when someone talked about him.
"I know." Amy managed to say sternly, indicating that today was not the day.
Sarah opened her mouth but closed it with a defeated sigh. She looked at her best friend's lying figure and slowly turned her eyes towards the window. The sun was high in the sky and the weather looked clear. The air was a little humid, and it was then her eyes fell on the water bottle kept on the table.
An idea crossed her mind, and she found herself trying one more time to get her best friend's attention.
"You know... there's a cursed lake on that hill."
