Chapter Nineteen
Hello,
This isn't the greatest but I am trying to get back to writing. Please be patient.
Your Girl Draya
Melanie
" Remember to keep one of Kj's inhaler's on you at all times." I reminded Kaden, who was in the driver's seat driving to our destination, while I was in the passenger seat finishing up my makeup. KJ was in his carseat occupying his time in watching dinosaur facts for children on my phone.
" There's one in my purse, one in his backpack, and there should be another in your suit jacket. Make sure it's in there before we go in."
" I know Melanie, I know."
Kaden had been irritated all morning. It was now Saturday the day of the benefit and luncheon. Paige declined to mention that the benefit was a cookout style at the investors many clubhouses. We didn't figure that out until the said investor texted Kaden saying he couldn't wait to meet his family and have a nice friendly game of golf. Needless to say we are overdressed.
Well Kaden was over dressed. My sundress and sandals, and Kj's polo shirt and shirts seemed to fit the event while Kaden was stuck wearing a suit. Kaden who insisted on packing his own bag for the weekend, only packed suits thinking that he was at a upscale event all weekend. If I would have packed his bah To his benefit, KJ and I tagged along expecting to busy ourselves going around Dallas while Kaden was busy.
Speaking of that Bitch, Paige, she got an ear full from me a couple of days ago when I visited the office again. Kaden and I were trying to find compromise in spending time together with KJ. One of the ways is having an allotted time on his schedule for us to be together whether it be during lunch hour or dinner. Well this time it was closer to dinner time and Kj was adamant on wanting to go back to the playroom after dinner. I needed to work on sketches for this mural piece for William so why not?
Kaden and I ended up having fun with each other like any other parent would when their child is out of their presence. There's usually a ten minute window for us to get it going no matter the time of day so we get it in when you can. This time the interruption came from someone else.
Flashback
"I can't concentrate with you looking like that," I said to Kaden who was sitting in front of me at his desk, working on a file. His eyebrows creased in confusion at my comment as he continued on typing a note on his computer.
"Looking like what babe? I'm only working."
I set my sketchbook to the side and moved up in my seat. My gaze slid over his form, drinking in the sight of him. The tailored suit hugged his broad shoulders, and his dark hair was slightly tousled from running his hands through it. Even in the sterile office environment, he managed to exude a raw masculinity that made my pulse quicken.
"Like a man who's about to drive me insane," I purred, my voice low and husky. I leaned forward, my elbows resting on his desk, and my fingers tracing imaginary patterns on his tie.
Kaden's typing halted, and his eyes met mine, a spark of desire igniting within them. He slowly leaned back in his chair, his gaze never leaving mine. "Is that so?" he murmured, his voice rough with suppressed desire.
"Very much so," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks as I leaned in closer, the scent of his cologne filling my senses. Just as I was about to close the distance between us, a sharp knock interrupted the electric tension.
"Mr. Davis, there's a call for you on line two," Paige, Kaden's secretary, announced, her voice cutting through the charged atmosphere.
A flicker of annoyance crossed my face, but I masked it with a polite smile. "Thank you, Paige," I replied, trying to keep my tone even. There was something about the way she'd interrupted that felt calculated, almost as if she'd timed it perfectly.
As Kaden picked up the phone, I couldn't help but glance at Paige, who was standing just outside the door, a smug look on her face. It was then that I realized she might have done this on purpose.
"Honey, it's okay," Kaden said softly, his hand reaching out to comfort me. "Paige wouldn't do anything to upset you. I'm sure it's just an important phone call"
His words were meant to reassure me, but they had the opposite effect. A cold fury began to build inside me. Was he defending her? Over me? I looked at him, my eyes narrowing. It was clear that something was off.
His words felt like a slap in the face. I pulled my hand away from his, my voice laced with frost. "Wouldn't she? Or couldn't she? Because the way she interrupted us felt very deliberate, Kaden."
Paige, sensing the rising tension, stepped into the room, her expression a mix of innocence and defiance. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but the call is urgent," she said, her voice dripping with false sympathy.
"I'm sure it is," I replied, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "But perhaps you could learn to read the room."
Kaden's face hardened. "Melanie, that's enough," he said, his voice low and stern.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. He was siding with her. A wave of anger and disbelief washed over me. I stood up, my body trembling slightly. "Fine," I said through clenched teeth. "I'll be in my office."
As I turned to leave, I couldn't help but glance back at the two of them. Their eyes met, and there was a flicker of something between them that made my blood run cold.
End of Flashback
To say that Paige is on thin ice is an understatement.
" Babe, if you want I can go shopping for you so you can be comfortable."
He sighed. " No, we're already late as it is." He unintentionally snapped.
Although I knew it wasn't intentional, his snappy behavior was not warranted. Before we were summoned to accompany him, KJ and I had a date to the Dallas World aquarium and now we have to wait until tomorrow.
" I offered to go to that mini shop I saw back at the hotel." I said matter factly. " I get it you're stressed but that doesn't mean you get to take it out on me. You've been snappy all morning when all I'm trying to do is help you. That was the whole point of us coming along, to take the pressure off of you."
Kaden gripped at the stirring wheel as he turned into the packed country club parking lot. He didn't say anything as he found a parking spot and parked. He quietly turned off the car then sat still as if he was in thought. I let him sulk on his own and got out the car once I got myself together.
I opened KJ's door to help him out.
" Hey mommy." Kj spoke sweetly.
" Hi baby." I kissed his cheek before unbuckling his seatbelt harness. " Listen, there's going to be a lot of people here so I need you stick beside to either daddy or me, Okay? Do you remember what I always tell you?"
" I can talk if I want to, but I should always be polite. If I need a break, I can tell you."
" That's right baby. Always tell mommy or daddy if you're uncomfortable. We must be on our best behavior for daddy, okay?"
I backed up to let Kj out of the car to feel Kaden behind me. " Wait by the grass, buddy." I heard Kaden say as I reached inside the car to grab Kj's backpack.
Kaden's hands grabbed onto my waist and pulled me into him. " Just hold on a sec, baby. " He placed a soft kiss onto my neck as he embraced me from behind.
"I'm sorry." He said simply. " Thank you for your help."
I turned around to face him, accepting his embrace. " Lose the shirt."
" Damn baby, it's like that? You know Kj earshot away." He asked confused thinking I meant in a sexual way.
I playfully rolled my eyes. " Not like that, you nasty. I meant lose the dress shirt. You have a white crewneck underneath, right? If you lose the dress shirt, the suit will look less formal. If you're not comfortable with that just don't wear the suit jacket and unbutton some of the buttons. It would look better if you don't wear the crewneck underneath though." I rattled off ideas as my stylist brain begins to turn. " The chain I got you for Christmas is in Kj's backpack actually. That would go good with this. I let him wear it the other day.
Kaden kissed my lips a couple of times. " I love you." He gushed as he began to take off his suit jacket and dress shirt.
" You better." I giggled." I love you too."
" I rather wear the dress shirt. I don't like how the t-shirt looks with these pants."
Kaden quickly got changed as I took out the chain for him. He was already wearing the Rolex that I got him as a matching set to complete the look. I grabbed onto Kj's hand once I saw that he was finished then we made our way into the clubhouse as a family.
Once inside we stuck together for the most part. So far this event consisted of Kaden introducing me to various business men and their wives. Kj stuck to me like glue as usual, but he proudly introduced himself to those that spoke to him. He told them his name, his age, and what he liked most, Dinosaurs and monster trucks all in one sentence, making the wives gush at his cuteness and the men telling him about their glory days of being three years old as if they can think back that far.
Soon enough we were separated, KJ with Kaden and I with some of the wives of the investors. Things were going well. It seemed as if Paige's sad attempt to embarrass Kaden isn't working.
Omniscient POV
Kaden navigated the bustling crowd, his attention divided between the conversation and his young son, KJ. The boy trailed behind, his small hand gripping the edge of Kaden's suit jacket.
"Daddy, I need to go potty," KJ whispered urgently.
Kaden paused, a flicker of annoyance crossing his face. The man he was speaking with, a potential investor with deep pockets, was mid-sentence, and Kaden was loath to interrupt. "Can't it wait? I'm busy right now," he replied, his voice low.
The man gave a sympathetic smile. "Kids, huh?"
Kaden nodded, his focus returning to the conversation. KJ tugged at his jacket again, his face growing red. Desperation flickered in his eyes.
A few moments later, disaster struck. KJ, unable to hold it any longer, had an accident. The sudden wetness seeped through Kaden's pants, a cold shock that jolted him out of his conversation. His eyes darted around, searching for a solution. Melanie was nowhere to be seen.
Anger and frustration surged through him. He'd been trying to balance a professional image with the demands of fatherhood, and now this. "KJ, what did you do?" he snapped, his voice echoing in the quiet moment.
KJ's lower lip trembled, his eyes welling up with tears. He understood none of the angry words being directed at him.
Melanie appeared, her face etched with a mix of concern and disapproval. "Kaden, what's going on?"
Kaden felt a wave of shame wash over him as he looked at his son's tear-streaked face. He knew he'd overreacted, but the embarrassment and inconvenience had momentarily clouded his judgment. "Take him," he muttered, his voice barely audible.
Melanie's eyes narrowed as she took KJ into her arms. "We need to talk," she said quietly, her tone laced with a warning.
Kaden watched as they disappeared into the crowd, a growing sense of dread settling in. He'd not only embarrassed himself in front of a potential investor but also damaged his relationship with his son. The once-promising afternoon had turned into a disaster.
