O N E

Stumbling down the hill, I land atop a boulder. I quickly get up and continue my way on, leaves crackling under my feet. It's a task maneuvering through the dark woods with no flashlight but honestly, it's probably best that I don't have one. There's no telling who's waiting out here.

I nearly plunge into a deep ditch as I come up on a fallen tree.

    Careful.

One wrong move and I'm out of here. I climb onto the trunk, maintaining my balance as I quickly cross to the other side. No time to hang around. I am met with a waist high barricade, you know, the ones you'd see in the streets. Except we're in a forest.

i.e. this is a red flag.

I crawl underneath it, instantly met with a change of plans, rolling down a small hill like a wheelbarrow. I hit the ground with a slight thud, dirt clouds wafting into the night sky. I push myself off the ground and begin to dust myself off as I hear the sound of a truck engine. I quickly crouch behind a large tree, peering around the corner to see a man dressed in all black pull the rear door down before hopping off and walking around the side, slapping the wall to alert the driver. I sneak by as quietly as I can as to not bring any more attention to myself than what I've already done.

The semi pulls off and I'm alone again.

I keep on my way, passing the many trees that accompany this forest. The world's become such a dark desolate place after these last few years, it wouldn't hurt to have someone to talk to. Years of no human interaction starts to get to you after a while.

I jump off a short ledge, landing right on a fresh branch, sending a loud snap through the air. I quickly duck behind a large fallen metal canister as a flashlight shines in my direction. Two sets of footsteps begin to wander as I sit there with my hands pressed against the cold metal. Don't come over here. The light veers off into a different direction and I glance at where they were once standing. They're investigating farther off into the woods so I take this chance to sprint past.

A fridge. An old, rusted fridge I see accompanied by a large stone wall. There's only one thing to do in this situation. I push over the fridge, a loud thump and a cloud of dust getting into my eyes in the process. I've never thought about adding fridges to my workout but I guess it's never too late to spice things up. I push it over to the wall to give me something to climb onto and I get over the wall, dropping about fifteen feet onto new ground.

I hide behind more barricades as the truck I once saw before passes at the end of the road. I spotted two more guards, but this time, with a dog. How great, nothing like running from old Sparky. I sneak by once again, thinking I made it in the clear, but am only met with another slope to doom. I slide feet first down the hill, water waiting for me at the bottom. This was definitely not how I planned on spending my time but here we are, seconds from a pool party.

I make a big splash as I come into contact with the waist deep water. Water never brings me anything good. I try to quickly move through but as we all know, everything is in slow motion when it comes to water. A bright light nearly blinds me once I reach the middle and I hear faint barking that progressively gets louder. I turn and look behind me, my heart instantly dropping.

Sparky is olympic swimming towards me.

I try to pick up my pace, the fear of being mauled to death giving me motivation. I reach the shore and I book it, or at least try to, with how soaked my clothes are, adding what felt like ten pounds to my body. I see a ditch a few feet in front of me and the sound of barking behind me is getting closer and closer. I have no choice but to jump.

So I do.

I nearly fall in as I catch hold of a large root sticking out the ground. Looking behind me I see Sparky barking rabidly at me, unable to reach me. I pull myself up the side of the ledge with the little amount of strength I have left, laying flat on my back as I make it over. "Take that...bitch.." I huff, out of breath. I muster up the strength to get up as the dog runs off, back to its owner I'm assuming.

The journey continues as I tiredly walk through the dark for what feels like forever. I pass through a more open area with noticeably less trees, giving me a slight eerie feeling. Like clockwork, I hear tires rolling on pavement. I see a van trailing behind on the road a few feet beside me and I pick up speed, a flashlight flicking on and searching around.  They almost spot me as I jump off a ledge and hide underneath it, the light dwindling in the distance as they continue by.

Can I get a break?

I resume my walking once they get far enough and soon I'm back in the tree filled forest. My feet splash in a puddle. I've dreamt about times like this. The what if I was the only one left on Earth kind of thing. I mean, I doubt I'm the only one left.. It just.. Feels like I am..

My thoughts are broken when I see headlights. I stare for a split second, maybe no one's inside. They probably went patrolling around. I proceed slowly, keeping my eyes in the direction of the blinding light. My assumption was quickly trashed when a smaller flashlight appeared. I begin to run as a man in black starts chasing me.

Again with the running.

The adrenaline returns as I sprint over the dirt. I leap over a log and splash into a large puddle, ruining my shoes being the least of my worries right now. That seems to buy me some time, slowing the man down slightly. I came up on an old RV. Hiding behind it as another man patrolling on the back of a pickup truck passes by. Seems everyone is enjoying their job tonight, huh? I run by, only to catch his attention, now making it two guys chasing me.

Double the fun, righ?

I am met with yet another small ledge that I jump down off of, stopping the two guys atop. Just as I feel as though I lost them, pops begin to ring out. He has a gun, great. Four shots are let out, all thankfully missing me as I drop down off another ledge. My breathing is heavy as I hear the sounds of barking, this time multiple. For God's sake can somebody run them over! Please!

I am almost to the edge of the cliff. I take a quick glance behind me at the three murder hungry dogs trailing behind me. There's no escaping this! I mentally prepare myself to jump off this cliff to once again, escape being mauled by dogs. On three.

Three!
