Chapter 5
The rest of the day went by in a blur. All I could do was picture Wes' face and rub my hand where I could swear I still felt his. Before I knew it, it was time for dinner. Lolly waited at the hall window to see Lucas while Sage and I started to eat. Soon the line of class B kids could be seen walking down the hall. Alongside them was a group of guys in gray clothes, heading to the cafeteria as well. One of them walked up close to Lucas and looked like he whispered something to him.
In a blink of an eye, Lucas had the boy by the throat, pushed up against the wall. Three of the boy's friends, along with one of the guards, pulled on Lucas' clothes and arms trying to get him to let go. Lucas didn't budge, he just kept repeating "Say it again, go ahead, say it!"
The one guard gave up and took off down the hall. When he was no longer in sight, the boy's friends took a different tactic. They starting punching and kicking the back of Lucas' legs, back, and head. But it was like he didn't feel a thing.
Wes jumped out of line next while Declan came running out into the hall. Wes punched one of the boys, knocking him out, and threw another into the wall. Declan had come up from behind the last boy and wrapped his arm around his throat. In a second the boy was unconscious and Declan lowered the boy's sleeping body to the floor before letting go.
At the same time, Declan and Wes ran to get Lucas off the boy he had pinned but before they reached him, Mr. B showed up out of nowhere. He picked Lucas off the ground with one arm and secured him against the wall on the other side of the hall. Then Ms. Pierce was in the hall, demanding they all be brought to her office. Mr. B grabbed Lucas by the arm and dragged him off while Declan and Wes followed on their own accord.
Lolly jumped off the table, where she was just frozen, watching the scene unfold in front of us, and took off after them. Sage and I looked to one another and without having to say a thing, we both got up and followed. When we reached the office, we found Lolly pacing in front of the door.
"Whats going on?" I asked as we got closer.
Lolly, just noticing we were there, answered, "I don't know. They won't let me in and they won't tell me anything."
She continued her pacing while Sage and I sat on the floor. Over twenty minutes went by before the guys came out with Ms. Pierce and Mr. B. Lolly ignored the adults and ran to Lucas, wrapping her small arms around him as much as she could.
"Are you okay? Baby talk to me?"
Lucas looked to Ms. Pierce who stepped away with Mr. B to give us all a moment to talk.
"That jerk walked up and said since I was off in class B security he was going to take my place and get a piece of ass," Lucas told her.
Lolly looked up at him with such love in her eyes.
I guess it felt good to have a guy fight for you, but at the same time, it was scary. I'd never seen someone flip a switch like that. While pinning that boy, it looked almost as if he had flames in his eyes and the boy was going to catch fire. Not to mention the strength and skill in which Wes and Declan took out the other three guys. It wasn't like those guys were small either, yet Declan and Wes had no trouble throwing them around.
Lucas let go of Lolly just long enough to pat both Declan and Wes on the back. "Thanks guys for having my back."
"No problem."
"Anytime."
Ms. Pierce returned with Mr. B by her side, only I was just then noticing a mesh bag in her hand.
"Mr. Shaw, its time and the rest of you should probably head back to your rooms as well."
This time Sage jumped to her feet as she asked, "Time for what?"
Declan ran his hand through his shaggy blonde hair while keeping his eyes on the floor.
"They're moving me to class B."
"What? That's not fair!" Sage cried out looking accusingly towards Ms. Pierce, "He was trying to defuse the situation!"
Ms. Pierce didn't even blink as she answered, "He still put his hands on another person. Not to mention, the boy he choked hasn't even woken up yet, he's still out in the nurse's office."
Sage looked as if she was about to protest when Declan placed his hand on her arm and whispered, "Thanks, Sage, but I knew what I was getting into when I ran out in the hall."
She held her mouth tightly shut but you could still see the disapproval in her eyes as Declan headed down the hall behind Mr. B. Ms. Pierce called for a guard to escort Lucas and Wes back to their rooms, and just as they began walking away, Wes passed me and brushed his hand softly against mine. I tried to ignore it but locked eyes with Sage who raised her eyebrows back at me.
The following morning, I wasn't woken up by guards pounding on the doors, but instead by Lolly who was jumping back and forth on her bed.
"It's Sunday, it's Sunday," she sang over and over.
"What's so special about Sunday?" I asked, trying to open my eyes.
She stopped bouncing when she saw I was awake but then started again.
"Sunday means no school cause they're using the classrooms for visitation. So we have the whole day to just hang out."
She jumped from the bed to the floor with a loud thud.
"Plus, the cafeteria is open all day. So no scheduled meals, we can eat when we want."
"Which means I could have slept in," I grumbled back.
It was no use though, Lolly's singing and jumping already had me wide awake. My stomach grumbled as I got to my feet. Guess I was eating early anyway. I got dressed while Lolly skipped around the room.
When we reached the cafeteria, Sage was already at the table picking bites off her food. As we sat down, the class B line came walking down the hall, with the addition of Declan. Sage caught a glimpse and immediately hung her head while Lolly banged on the window for Lucas. Looked like the class B kids still had scheduled meals on Sundays. I looked up to peer out the window and wasn't surprised to find Wes looking as well and an idea struck me. I dropped my fork on the table.
"The peer counseling group should get together!"
Lolly zipped around in her seat with the widest eyes I had ever seen. "Yes!" She yelled so loud that kids all around us turned to look at the commotion. Before any of us could say another word she was running off to find Mr. B. When she returned, she informed us "The TV room, at nine." and then took off again only to run over to Alicia who was sitting with another group of girls.
The TV room was not empty like last time. I looked around to find somewhere to sit when I spotted Mr. B, standing in the back of the room by a set of table and chairs where Lucas, Wes, and Declan were already seated. We each took an empty chair, with the exception of Lolly who chose Lucas' lap and a minute later Alicia joined us.
"So, what's today's little meet and greet about?" she asked, taking the last chair.
I looked around waiting for someone to say something when I realized this whole thing was my idea. I tried to think as I caught the looks of other kids in the room who were obviously surprised to see class B kids in the TV room.
Shrugging, I said, "Just thought it would be a good idea for us all to hang out. Maybe get to know each other better or something, like Ms.Pierce wanted."
Everyone seemed satisfied with that answer.
"How are you holding up Declan?" Sage asked and we all looked at him with concern. Well, all except Alicia.
"I'm okay," he answered and shot us all one of his carefree looks.
That's when something across the room caught his attention and his brows furrowed together in concentration. We all turned to look in the same direction and saw another breaking news story on the TV screen.
"Hey turn it up," Wes called and soon the only sound that could be heard in the room was the news reporter's voice.
"The congregation of Holy Mother St. Mary Catholic Church in downtown, were shocked today when arriving at their usual Sunday Mass, were instead greeted by police and paramedics."
The screen played clips of a beautiful cathedral church with two-story columns and bright stained glass windows, along with an office in disarray.
"The leader of St. Mary, Father Matthew, was attacked in the early hours this morning by an unknown assailant. Father Matthew was able to call nine one one but by the time help arrived his attacker was gone."
The screen now showed the raven-haired newswoman standing in front of the church, while pictures of an elderly man in an ambulance appeared in the top corner of the screen.
"When asking the police about the details, they said they could not give any information on the attack, or whether or not anything had been stolen, but did state that Father Matthew was in critical condition. His congregation now prays for his full recovery." and with that, the story ended showing the main anchor people informing their audience that they would be back at the twelve-o-clock news hour.
All of us at the table seemed to feel bad about what we had just seen but no one said a word. Surprisingly, even Mr. B, who stood a few feet away, looked disturbed by what was played on the TV. Everyone stayed silent as some comedy show began, each of us in our own thoughts. Eventually, those thoughts were broken when a guard walked into the room.
"I have names for visitation," he started, calling out names of kids I didn't know and then said, "Sage Ramsey."
Sage got up as if it was nothing new.
"Sorry guys, I gotta go. My grandparents are here."
We all nodded and watched as she left the room, but the guard still stood there going over their list of names. I knew mine wouldn't be on it. Mom already said it would be about a month before she could get time off to fly out here, so it was no surprise when the guard finished and walked out. At that moment, Alicia must have decided this was a waste of her free day and got up and left without a word to any of us.
Mr. B didn't move from his position against the wall so I assumed it didn't matter that our whole group wasn't here. Lolly and Lucas pushed away from the table for a little privacy and started whispering back and forth to one another, as Lolly flirtatiously giggled here and there. Declan laid his head on the table and soon soft snores could be heard. I couldn't help but laugh, I guess sleeping in a room full of people felt better than being locked alone in the class B dorms.
Wes must have thought it was funny to cause he had a big smile on his face as he dragged his chair from the other side of the table and placed it next to mine.
"So, no visitors today?" he asked.
I shook my head, thinking of my mom and then quickly tried to brush it off as I asked, "So how does the whole visitation thing work anyway?"
"Not really sure, never had any visitors. I've heard some of the other kids talk about it and I guess they have about four visitors in each classroom. They try not to have more than that due to security, and the length of the visits depends on how many people they have waiting to see their loved ones."
It made sense to me, I just hoped I had plenty of time with my mom when she came to visit. Then again, that's probably what most of the kids here wished for. God, I felt bad for Wes though. To be locked away and not have anyone, not even your parents come visit you. I felt like shit for even bringing it up now.
"Chloe McKenna."
I heard my name called and looked to see another guard standing at the door.
"You have a visitor."
Confused, yet excited, I looked at Wes who was smiling but I could see the disappointment in his eyes as he said, "I'll see you around, Chloe."
Once downstairs, I was directed to the same class used for history. As I got closer, I could hear a commotion coming from inside. I opened the door to find Sage with an elderly couple in one corner. Sage was screaming at the top of her lungs, "Get the hell out!"
Only she wasn't screaming at her grandparents, she was screaming at my mom.
My mom? What the hell?
Mom was standing in the opposite corner behind a guard.
"Mom!" I tried to yell over Sage, but she couldn't hear me.
Sage, on the other hand, did hear me.
"Damn it, Chloe!" Was all she could get out before she turned to face the wall, placing her forehead against it and bracing herself with both arms.
It was like she was hit with something hard and had to take a minute to collect herself, but at least the screaming had stopped. My mom finally noticed me and came running over to drag me back out into the hall. She started pacing frantically, running her hands through her hair.
"You know that girl?" she asked, pausing her pacing just long enough to look at me.
I had questions of my own but answered her's first.
"Yeah, she's kind of a friend."
"A friend! A friend!" she repeated to herself.
She stopped and gave me a look I had never seen from her before. It was as if I was looking at a different person completely. Then her voice rang through the halls.
"She's your twin sister, Chloe!"
