*Chapter Twelve*
*These events happen through Fool Me Once and before There Goes the Neighborhood. I am so sorry. Like really, I'm sorry. you'll understand later.*

If Claire didn't feel guilty for hurting Bonnie before, she definitely does now. She tried calling and texting her but Bonnie never answered. She even went by Shelia's house and the once kind and supportive Grams made it adamantly clear Claire was no longer welcome. She threw around the word, Abomination, and Claire can't help but to wonder if she was right.
What kind of person would hurt their friend? Take their magic and want to do it again. Claire could feel the craving of wanting magic building up in her. She even dreamed about stealing Bonnie's magic, grinning as she does it. It always scared her when she woke up. Maybe she was an abomination but she didn't want to be.
She had stopped trying to contact Bonnie a couple of days ago. She had tried getting Bonnie to answer one last time, especially when she found out Shelia had died while she was asleep. She felt horrible and hated the fact that Sheila hated her when she died, it didn't settle well with Claire. But Bonnie continued to ignore her and avoid her at all costs, so Claire just stopped.
It killed her when she thought about her losing one of her closest friends. It even hurt whenever she thought about Shelia's death, they were so close before Claire hurt Bonnie. The guilt was almost overwhelming.
It didn't help that Claire had gotten sick, yet again. She didn't understand it but apparently pregnant women get sick easier, according to google. She felt so weak, like she couldn't move. Of course she could move and walk and all that, but not for very long. She could walk down the hall but then would need to sit. She also got dizzy easy. The cough and sneezing were back as well but thankfully she wasn't throwing up.
The sudden decline in physical health sure as hell didn't help her mental health. Claire found herself looking through old photos. Of her and Bonnie, of her and the babies father. Claire was curious because as she looked at the photos of her and him, it didn't hurt as badly. In fact, she was only looking at a photo of him for a few moments before her mind went to Henrik.
It cheered her up thinking about him and she tossed her phone to the side. She laid on her bed, on her back looking up at the ceiling. She couldn't sense Henrik but she knew he was somewhere in the room. He promised he wouldn't leave her and she held onto that promise with all her sanity.
"Baby?" Caroline sounded on the other side of Claire's closed bedroom door. Claire wiped some tears she didn't realize were falling and turned her head towards the door. "How are you holding up?" Caroline asked softly.
Caroline didn't understand exactly what was going on with Claire. She knew her sister was sick and upset about Sheila's death and about that her and Bonnie were at odds but not about what. She had tried to get some information from Claire but the pregnant girl didn't want to talk about it.
"I'm fine, Care" Claire said, her voice extremely hoarse.
"Claire, please talk to me... Open the door" Caroline begged from the other side of Claire's bedroom door. Caroline pressed her ear to the door and could hear Claire sniffling as she started to cry again. She wanted to talk to Caroline, God did she want to talk to her sister but she couldn't. She felt terrified every time she went to talk to her about being a Siphoner, about how she hurt Bonnie. "Claire" Caroline whined.
"I just want to be alone right now, Caroline" Claire said before coughing. Caroline sighed turning around leaning against the door. "Please Caroline" Claire whispered loud enough for her sister to hear her. She knew that Caroline was still on the other side of her door.
Claire felt touched that her sister wanted to help but she honestly just wanted to be by herself right now. She didn't want to bring Caroline down, especially when she's been so happy lately. She knew Caroline has done so much for her, especially the last few months, and right now she'd rather have Caroline go be with Matt and be happy than stay here and be sad.
"Do you have your phone?" Caroline asked reluctantly after a few moments.
"Of course" Claire replied sniffling as she did so.
"Then text me if you need something or call me, please" Caroline said. Claire smiled ever so slightly. She laid on her side looking at the door, seeing Caroline's shadow.
"I will" Claire promised. Caroline sighed and reluctantly left. Claire let out a small sigh cuddling in her blankets more.
At some point Claire had fallen asleep. It was peaceful for the most part. Up until she was awaken by a searing pain. She groaned quickly becoming more alert. She struggles to sit up taking deep breaths as she does so.
"What the hell?" Claire whispers as the pain subsides. It's a few moments before the pain hits her but harder. She cries out, holding her stomach. She looks down at her legs seeing water. "Fuck" She whispers and looks for her phone. She reaches for it as another wave of pain hits her and she cries out again.
Claire manages to stand, swaying as she felt a little bit of dizziness. She picks up her phone and calls Caroline. It rings but there's no answer. Claire curses and tries again. It rings and again, no answer.
"Damn it, Caroline" She cursed.
"Claire?" Liz asked coming up to her daughters door. Claire tried to hold in her sounds of pain but it felt like it was impossible. "Claire, what's wrong?" Liz said opening the door and walking in.
"Just go away, I'm getting Caroline" Claire snapped calling her sister again but the phone slipped through her hand. She hunched over practically screaming.
"Ok, we're going to the hospital" Liz said going over to her.
"No! I'm not-"
"I don't care if you don't like me right now. You have every right to be angry with me but right now, you need to get to the hospital and I'm the only one here" Liz snapped. Claire looked at her with tears in her eyes.
"It's too early" Claire whispered feeling terrified.
"It's going to be alright, Claire" Liz reassured walking over to her. "Everything's going to be fine" Liz whispered hugging her daughter. Claire sobbed snuggling into her mothers embrace. "I'm going to be here for you, Claire. I'm not going anywhere." She reassured.
"It hurts mom" Claire cried. Liz shushed her softly.
"I know, come on. We need to get going" Liz said leading her out to the car.
"Where's Caroline?" Claire asked. "I need her"
"I'll find her, don't worry about that. Let's just get you to the hospital" Liz reassured getting her into the car. Liz frowned seeing the sweat dripping down her forehead. Liz presses a cold hand on her forehead, Claire sighing in relief before groaning in pain.
Liz presses her lips together before getting in the drivers seat, driving to the hospital. Liz continued to try and get a hold of Caroline but couldn't. She continued to sneak worried glances at Claire before they finally made it to the hospital.
"Where's my doctor? Where's Caitlin?" Claire asked as Liz helped her into the hospital.
"I don't know, honey" Liz said as the nurses came and got her in a wheelchair. "Where is Doctor Snow?"
"Doctor Snow is on vacation with her family" The nurse said. Claire gasps while Liz sighs.
"No! Nope! I am not having these kids without Caitlin" Claire snapped as they continued to push her down the hallway.
"Sweetheart, these kids are coming whether you like it or not" The nurse sassed.
"Not if I have any say in it" Claire growled stubbornly. She went to get out of the wheelchair, that was still moving, but Liz presses her hand on her shoulder.
"Honey, these kids are coming. I know it's scary but these people know what they're doing" Claire pouts and her mother rolls her eyes.
"I want my doctor!" Claire shouted turning angry real quick.
"You're not getting your doctor, I'm sorry but it's just not gonna happen" Liz snapped right before Claire cried out as another wave of pain hit her.
"Why are you yelling at me?" Claire cried. The nurse held back a laugh as Liz rubbed her face.
"I'm going to go find Caroline" Liz said.
"No! Don't leave me!" Claire begged. Liz looked at her, her face softening.
"I'm not going anywhere" Liz promised. Claire smiled at her for the first time in months. The nurse wheeled her into the room and helped her into the chair.
"How long have you had a fever?" The nurse asked.
"I don't" Claire denied. The nurse scoffs.
"Yes, you do." Claire glared at the witch.
"My daughter, my other daughter, said she's been feeling sick lately. This isn't the first time." Liz said.
"What are the symptoms?" The nurse asked.
"Um, dizziness, shortness of breath, coughing, sneezing, head aches." Liz listed. Claire smiled at her.
"You have been paying attention" Claire muttered. Liz smiled at her.
"Looks like you have a fever and you're dehydrated.. this isn't going to be easy." The nurse warned. Claire looked at her scared.
"Are my babies ok? They're not supposed to come yet." Claire whimpered. The nurse didn't get to say anything as the doctor comes in.
"Hi, Claire, I'm Doctor Williams, I'll be helping you today." The doctor said instantly taking in the state Claire was in.
"Will someone please tell me if my babies are ok?" Claire whimpered.
"We're going to find out real soon" The doctor reassures. "How are you feeling?" He asked.
"It hurts" She whispered. "I'm tired." The doctor nods slowly.
"Have you considered doing a C-Section?" He suggests.
"No" She said quickly. "I don't want one"
"It'll be safer for not only you but the babies" He told her. She whined not wanting the scar. She had spent the last few months watching her bikini body leave and now they wanted to give her a scar?
"Claire, I think it's for the best" Liz said right before Claire cries out, her entire body tensing. She felt the energy leaving her body faster than before and she struggled to keep her eyes open.
"Ok, we need to start now" The doctor said. "I'm sorry ma'am but you need leave."
"No, mom" Claire whined.
"I'm going to be right outside, don't worry." Liz reassured as she was rushed out. She sighed feeling worry build in her veins. "Come on, Caroline" Liz whispered calling her oldest.
"Mom?" Caroline answered. Liz sighed in relief.
"Caroline, get to the hospital" Liz said instantly. "Claire's having her babies."
"Ok, Ok, I'm on my way" Caroline said and went to hang up but stopped. "How is she?" She asked.
"Just get here" Liz whispered. Dread filled Caroline and she hung up. Liz rubbed her face before walking over to the cafeteria to get some coffee knowing it was going to be a long night.
By the time Caroline got to the hospital, Liz was sitting in the waiting room. Caroline arrived with Matt, Elena and Stefan. The four of them had been hanging out at the grill when Caroline saw all the missed calls.
"Mom?" Caroline said and Liz looked up. "How is she?"
"She has a fever and she was dehydrated. She doesn't have the energy to give birth so they're doing a C-Section" Liz told them.
"A C-Section?" Matt asked. "And she agreed?" Liz shrugged.
"Well, she's going to be happy about that" Caroline said. "Have you heard anything?" Caroline asked and Liz shook her head. "Have you called dad?"
"Not yet, I'll go call him now" Liz said taking her phone out.
"Why don't we just sit down and relax for a little bit" Elena suggested. Stefan nodded in agreement.
"Has anybody gotten a hold of Bonnie?" Caroline asked.
"She's not coming" Elena said. Caroline rolled her eyes.
"I don't know what happened between them but she should be here." Caroline snapped. "She's been one of her biggest supporters, it's going to crush her if Bonnie doesn't come."
"We can't make her come, Caroline" Elena said. Caroline huffed pulling out her phone.
"Watch me" She said calling their missing friend. Liz comes back with the other Gilbert sibling.
"Hey, I came as soon as I saw your text" Jeremy said walking into the room with a stuffed teddy bear. Elena instantly smiles.
"That's adorable." Elena said.
"Wait.. she's having twins" Jeremy winced. "Should have gotten two."
"She's gonna love it" Elena said as Jeremy sat down.
"You listen to me Bonnie Bennett" Caroline growled, venom dripping off her tone. They all watched her as she snapped and threatened Bonnie before hanging up. "She is so frustrating sometimes" Caroline huffed. Matt laughed quietly.
"Family of Claire Forbes?" Caroline and Liz instantly stand along with everyone else. Dr. Williams look at them with a raised eyebrow. "Big family?" He asked.
"It's just us" Liz said motioning between her and Caroline. "They're here for support."
"Well, that's good. She's going to need all the she can get." He said. "Can I talk to you two alone for a moment." The two Forbes girls nod and follow him into the hallway.
"How is she?" Caroline asks instantly.
"She's asleep. She's going to be very weak for a little while. We're going to keep her here to manage her condition but she's going to be fine." Liz and Caroline look at each other in relief before looking back at the doctors.
"And the babies?" Liz asked. Dr. Williams sighed.
"She had a boy and a girl." He told them but his face was anything but happy.
"That's not a 'I just successfully delivered two babies and am so happy' face" Caroline said dreadfully. Dr. Williams sighed.
"When the babies were born they struggled to breath on their own. We put them on a respirator. The girl took to it well and we have her in the NICU right now." The doctor explained to them.
"And the boy?" Caroline asked hesitantly.
"He didn't take to the respirator, his heart wasn't strong enough. We lost him." Tears fill both Caroline and Liz's eyes. Caroline covers her mouth in sorrow. "I'm so sorry" He told them.
"But Claire is alright" Liz whispered.
"Claire and the girl are doing well. It'll take them a while to be completely healthy. Tonight is going to be the hardest for them but tomorrow, the worst will be over, physically anyways." He added. "I am so sorry" He told them.
"Thank you" Liz muttered and he nodded walking off.
"This is going to crush her" Caroline whimpered. "Oh my God she's going to be devastated" Caroline cried. Liz brought her into a tight hug both of them dreading the moment Claire found out.
