As soon as the Demon's head hit the pillow, he knew there would be nightmares to fill his slumber. And as soon as Aziraphale heard Crowley's whimpers, he knew it would be yet another painful night for his Demon.
A war. Crowley didn't know exactly what war it was, he had fought in so many...
Blood stained the grass of the battlefield. The bodies of young men scattered the field. Men too young to have lost their lives. Husbands. Sons. Fathers. All torn from their families by this terror that out-did any torture from Hell. One man had a small picture still grasped in his hand. His family and Crowley closed his eyes.
When he reopened his eyes, the memory that haunted his dreams the most appeared. The forces of both Heaven and Hell were dragging Aziraphale's unconscious body away, ready to kill him. Ready to torture the poor Angel. A warm smile spread across his Angel's face as he regained his consciousness,
"I love you... Crowley..." Aziraphale whispered before they pushed him into a cage.
Crowley knew all too well what they'd do next. Hell-fire.
They'd singe the Angel's wings, scorching skin, forcing Crowley to watch, tears streaming down both of their faces.
"Azirap-"
"-hale!!"
Crowley cried out and clutched his sheets tighter. Only they weren't his sheets.
Two warm arms wrapped around Crowley, pulling him closer to the safety of the Angel's warm body.
"Shhhh. It's alright, my dear. I'm right here..."
Aziraphale ran his fingers through the Demon's short fiery hair, humming a soft song to calm Crowley. A desperate sob escaped his mouth and he clung to Aziraphale.
This was even worse than any of the other nights. Never before had the Angel witnessed Crowley completely break down in his arms like so. With a snap of Zira's fingers, the duvet was once again covering them and Aziraphale felt Crowley bury himself further in his arms.
The couple laid in bed until Crowley had finally let out all of his emotions from the nightmare.
All the fears he kept inside of himself of his Angel partner dying or not loving him. All the things he regretted. All the things he loved (Aziraphale was mentioned plenty of times one this list). All these things were spilled out to Aziraphale as they embraced each other underneath the duvet.
Once the tears had subsided, the Angel pressed a passionate kiss to Crowley's lips, allowing himself to linger on the Demon's lips as he pulled away.
"I will always be here, Crowley. I will always love you, that I can promise you."
And Crowley knew he could trust him
Because Aziraphale never broke a promise
