Excerpt from Chapter 4 of 'Nowhere But You' — A conversation between Nathan and River.

"She's had her heart broken three times already. Three times." Nathan signaled a three with his fingers. He was about to give information no one had asked for, but that he considered important for River to know. "First time was her high school boyfriend, Brian." (...) "She saw herself marrying the guy. But it all ended when they finished high school. They would attend different colleges, away from each other. Her stepdad persuaded her to break it up, claiming she needed to focus on her Law studies."

"I see."

"Just like in that film. It hit her hard." Nathan reminisced of how Robin called him every night that summer, bawling, heartbroken, and counting the days until she'd finally move to college to be near her best friend (him) and leave all of that behind. He couldn't wait either. "She loved the guy, or rather, she loved the idea of them. She still shudders whenever she hears or reads the name Brian."

River felt a bit awkward hearing all of this, but he couldn't deny he was curious to know more, to know her heart. Also, Nathan just wouldn't stop talking.

"Number two, was a young professor from her faculty." Nathan continued. "They kept it secret, for obvious reasons, a teacher dating a student has always been frowned upon..." (...) "It was going nowhere, really, but she was head over heels for that guy." Nathan rolled his eyes. He had forgotten how much he actually disliked the guy. "Then one time, she went to have dinnerlunch with her family at a restaurant in Granville. They walked in and there he was, dining... with his wife. Robin had no idea." (...) "Not only that, her stepdad knew him. Of course he had no idea of what was going on between them so to him it was just running into a colleague and his wife. The whole thing was a fucking trip. She wanted to throw herself off of a bridge. Cried for ages. Terrible."

Nathan paused, reminiscing, but River was waiting to hear more.

"Who was the third?" The latter inquired.

"That... that would be me." Nathan stammered.
