Chapter 19
I followed Colt quietly as we walked through the carnival in silence. It looked like a regular carnival, with a rollercoaster and a merry-go-round. Food stands were set up all around us, serving people as we passed them. A man started to yell, drawing a crowd in front of his game. I looked around at the different games and rides, keeping an eye out for Urie. My pocket had a thin layer of ice around it, from how cold my hands were. I looked around more as I walked, while Colt led the way and looked back at me once in a while. I huffed every time he did it, which got annoying. He looked straight ahead as he stopped. I almost crashed into him. "We shouldn't stop. It's probably what they want us to do," I said, as Colt turned in many directions. I studied him in confusion, then realized he was ignoring me. "Colt, we need to keep going. This is dangerous," I said, as he looked at me. "Shush, I'm trying to figure out where we need to go," he said, as he started to sniff the air. He turned up ahead. "Let's go straight. Please keep it down, I need to concentrate," he said, as he started to walk up ahead. I sighed again as I followed in silence, watching his back just in case something happened. We continued to walk through the carnival as it started to get a little more confusing. Colt walked a little bit, then slowed down to sniff the air. "Maybe I should turn into my dog form," he said, as I took a deep breath. "They probably know you're here already. Plus I'm with you, so you think they'll realize that you're not a regular dog?" I asked as he narrowed his eyes at me. "I would teach you a lesson, but this is not the right time, Ella," he said, as I huffed. I scooted in front of him as I kept walking straight, weaving my way through the carnival in silence. "HEY, WAIT ELLA!" Colt yelled as I turned around. "Your being useless, so I'm gonna figure a way out of this," I said, as I continued to walk away. Colt started to catch up. "Do you know a way out of this?" he asked as he walked by my side. "No, but I've been caught in a few illusions to figure my way out of here," I said, as I looked around. I stopped as I looked at the funhouse, then at another tent right next to it. The tent looked like a storage tent, with boxes and different supplies. I headed for the tent. "Should we go to the funhouse or something?" Colt asked as I huffed. "That's what they want us to think," I said, as he huffed himself. "But, isn't a storage tent more dangerous?" he asked as I opened the tent entrance.
The tent was full of cages in all shapes and sizes. The cages had different supplies in them, making it less obvious to hide. I looked around as I quietly walked into it, letting the sheet fly back down. I looked around as I slowly walked, keeping an ear open for any sound that came my way. The only thing that I could hear, was dripping water and a chain swaying in the wind. I started to walk slowly through as I fisted my hands to keep them cold. The sound of running came from outside the tent as Colt ran in. "Ella, what are you doing," he started to say but I turned around and placed a finger to my lips, hoping he would be silent. I walked up to him. "Keep it down. I don't know where they're hiding," I said, as I pulled away from him and started to walk more into the tent. "Ella. They could be in here," he finally whispered. I turned to him. "What was your plan? To turn around and hope we don't run into them?" I asked as I studied him. He fell silent. I nodded. "That's what I thought. Through the tent we go," I said, as I started to sneak through the tent. I weaved my way through the tent as padding came up behind me. I whipped around as a big black nose zoomed into my face. I sighed. "Colt, I don't think your dog form will be helpful," I said, as Colt tilted his head back and whimpered. I sighed. "Alright, just keep it silent and stealthy. I don't want to get caught," I said, as I started to weave my way through again. I crawled over boxes and dodged crates that got in my way. I quietly moved some to the side as I passed through the messy tent. It was challenging to weave through the tent. But to my surprise, we made it out easier than I expected. I stood up and looked at the exit before us, which showed a pathway between a bunch of other tents. I exited as Colt went back into his human form. Colt walked after me as he turned back. "That was better than I expected. Even for a crowded tent," he said, as I glanced at him. "Told you," I said, as I started to walk away. A cold breeze brushed up against me, which was soothing. Colt shivered. "It's colder now," he said, as I shrugged. "It's relaxing," I said, as he shot me another look. "Are you crazy? It's freezing," he said, as I looked at him. "Oh yeah. Ice Queen," he said, as I rolled my eyes at the comment. "Let's just hurry. Maybe we'll find a warmer tent so you won't freeze to death," I said as we continued to walk through the carnival.
I continued to lead the way, as I scanned around the carnival to find a clue that would help us. Knowing Urie, he always made sure we played in the illusion before he attacked. I looked around as Colt followed me, but looked above at the tops of the tent. I sighed as I spoke. "Ok, where to try next," I said, as a strange voice caught my attention. "Come one, come all." It came from the right. I looked at the voice to see a carnie standing in front of a small round tent. He was dressed in a striped trench coat and a matching top hat. He held a red stick as he tried to attract customers to his tent. "Magic's in the air," he said, as he turned to Colt and me. "You there," he said, pointing his stick at us. "Do you wanna see magic?" he asked as I shook my head. "No thanks. But we're looking for the exit out of here," I said, as Colt jolted. "Ella," he whispered. The man smiled. "Come on in. I have the answer to that," he said, as I started to walk towards the tent. Colt grabbed my arm as it turned cold. "Ella, this may be a trap," he whispered in my ear. I turned to him. "You're right," I said, turning back to the man. "No thank you," I said, as the two of us started to walk away. "But you both look lost and I have the map to get out of here," he said, as I turned back to Colt. He sighed. "I'd like you to prove that," he said, as the man waved us in. "Come on in and we'll get started," he said, as Colt shook his head. "We're not going in," he said, as the man turned around. "No show, no map," he said, as Colt sighed. "Fine. We're coming," he said, as we followed the man into the tent.
The tent was full of red and purple lights. Boxes outlined the inside of the tent and a round table set was in the middle. On the table was a stone that glowed purple. The chairs were vintage dining chairs with cushions that matched the tent's theme. The man waved us in before closing the curtain to shut out the outside. "Sit and make yourself comfortable," he said, as he gestured to the table. I walked up to the purple chair as the man pulled it out for me. "Thanks," I said, as I sat down. The man pushed the chair in, and I got comfortable. Colt sat down on the other side of the table as he studied the man like he wanted to kill him. "Now tell me your reasonings for entering this carnival," the man said, as Colt sighed. "We're just passing through. Nothing important," he said, as the man nodded. "Travelers. Perfect," he said, as he walked to the side of the tent. He picked up a little dome that had a purple cloth over it. "Let's get started, shall we," he said, as he walked back to the table. He placed the dome in the middle as he lifted the sheet, revealing a purple rose with a black stem. I looked at the rose in confusion, then looked up at Colt. He just studied the rose as he sighed. "Make this quick, please," he said, as the man nodded. "Very well," he said, as he tapped the top of the dome.
With his touch, the dome vanished and the flower lost its stem. The rosehead lay flat on the table, as it grew bigger. Colt gripped his chair. "Ella," he said, but we didn't have time to make a move. The rosehead grew as big as the table, adding more petals to make it complete. Once it grew the size of the table it stopped. "Next, then I'll leave you in amazement," the man said, as he put a drop of blue liquid on the rosehead, then walked out of the tent. "Have fun," the man said, as he shut the curtain. The rosehead didn't do anything, but something prickly ran up my legs. I jumped as a vine started to wrap around my legs, and climbed higher as it continued to wrap. "Ella, you can freeze this thing at any time," Colt said, as he started to wiggle out. I felt my hands turn cold and then warm back up. "I can't," I said, as the vine wrapped up to my neck, went around my neck twice, then worked its way to the walls of the tent. It finally stopped.
Colt squirmed his way out of it, but he couldn't work his way out of it. "I can't use my hands to cut it," he said, as he continued to squirm. The vine around him rose as it wrapped around his mouth to muzzle him. "That's enough from you, mutt," a boy's voice spoke. Colt grew shocked as he looked at me. My hands started to get iced over as my arms wrapped around me. "Hello, my precious little sister," Cameron's voice greeted me. My eyes widened as I turned to him. "What are you doing?" I asked as I started to wiggle my way free. I failed. Colt started to yell but a vine grew out of the chair and wrapped around his mouth. "Sorry Colt," Cameron said, as he bent over me to hug me again. I tried to wiggle free. "What do you want?" I asked as Cameron laughed. "What, I can't miss my little sister?" he asked as Colt started to break free again. Cameron sighed as he snapped his fingers. When he did, Colt drifted into a deep sleep. "That's a lot better, " Cameron said, as I looked at Colt in shock. I looked back as I struggled again. "Let us go," I demanded as Cameron smiled. "You've still been under a lot of stress with everything. Dad now wants you to be monitored until you can get it under control," he said, as I turned to him. "You can tell dad," I said, but he placed a hand around my nose and mouth. "You just need a little nap for now," he said, as the scent of lavender filled my nose before I crashed into a deep sleep.
....
Cameron smiled as he stood up. Hands started to clap as Urie and Lillian walked into the tent. "Brilliant job, both of you," he said, as he turned to the two. Lillian huffed as Cameron glared at Urie. "They're asleep. Now just undo your vines and do what you want to the mutt. I'll take my sister home," he said, as Urie sighed. "Fine," he said, as he undid the vines. The two asleep both fell but Cameron caught his sister. He picked Ella up and smiled. "I'll be home if you need me. Thank you both," he said, as he walked out of the tent. Urie turned to Lillian. "Lilly. Help daddy bring this boy to Shiki please," he said, as Lillian sighed. "Whatever," Lillian said, as she walked out of the tent. Urie turned to her. "Lillian. Be more cheerful," he said, as he turned back to Colt. "Well, her work was done anyway," he said, as he made a vine leash with his rose and dragged the unconscious boy out of the tent.
