Chapter 1
She sits in her house, waiting for her boyfriend to make it home. She's used to this, he always comes home late. It's like he's trying to stay away from her. She looks at the red bow tied to her ring finger before she closes her eyes. If he is her soulmate, then why wouldn't he want to spend time with her?
The more the thoughts swirl around in her head, the further she sinks into the soft velvet couch. It seems just like yesterday when she met him. It was perfect, following cherry-blossom petals through the streets without a plan on where to go. Then feeling someone watching her and looking up, right into his sea-green eyes.
And then she saw the string connecting their fingers, the joy he had on his face that day still makes her smile. She can still feel her heart flutter when she thinks about their first date. Everything was beautiful. He was so nice to her, he treated her with respect.
But it all changed one day. And she doesn't even know how or why. It's not like she's changed, and if she has, what was it? She's not begging him to get married, she's fine with the way things are. As long as he's happy. As long as he loves her.
A draft breezes through the room, causing her (h/c) hair to brush across her face. It makes her slowly close her eyes and take in a deep breath. She thought that once she found her soulmate, everything would be easy. She had witnessed first hand what it meant to be in a relationship with someone who wasn't your soulmate, and it wasn't pretty.
On the other hand, she has also seen people with their soulmates. They always seem so happy, like they don't doubt whether or not they're loved. She is content with they way things are, right? Even though she's constantly questioning if this is how it's supposed to be.
She feels the string on her finger tug, so she opens her eyes to look at it. It looks so fragile. It's changed from the day she met him. It's about ready to snap. The red color has faded to more of a dark crimson, it looks dirty.
She hears the keys jingle in the lock, so she immediately jumps off the couch and stands in front of the door as it opens. Her heart flutters when she sees his chocolate-brown hair, and his sea-green eyes. Her lips form a smile as he closes the door behind him, but something about the way he's carrying himself makes her heart slow down.
Something feels off, there's another tug on her finger. She doesn't look at it, instead she looks into his mesmerizing eyes, "What's the matter?"
"This isn't working," he says, sighing and staring at the floor to avoid looking her in the eyes. "We need to take a break."
"What do you mean?" She places her hand on her chest. "You're... breaking up with me?"
He nods silently, unsure if this is the way to go about this. He looks tired, he's been up many nights thinking. But she's not paying attention to him, her heart feels like it's sinking into her stomach. There's a lump in her throat.
She can barely breathe, but she manages to squeeze out the question on her mind, "Why? What did I do wrong?"
"You..." he continues to avoid looking at her, and he speaks softly. "It's not about you. Yet it's always about you."
"What do you mean by that?" she drops her hand away from her chest, tears welling up in her eyes. "Tell me what I did wrong. Talk to me. Please."
"I can't," he closes his eyes tightly. "You'd think less of me for it..."
"How could I think less of you?" she walks towards him with a small smile on her face. "You're my soulmate. I could never think bad of you."
"Can you stop spouting that nonsense?" he finally looks at her. "That's all you ever talk about. I'm sick of hearing about being soulmates. How can you be so accepting?"
"Because I love you," she goes to put her arms around him, but he pushes her away. The sting on her finger tugs again, but tighter, harder. "Why are you so distant? Why can't you talk to me? I'm here for you!"
He shakes his head, looking away from her again. The tears in her eyes making him feel uncomfortable. He wraps his arms around himself in order to comfort him in one way or another. She waits for a few seconds, before the silence in the room becomes too unbearable.
She takes a deep breath, "Tell me what to fix and I'll fix it."
"What's broken can't be fixed," his voice sends chills through her body. "So just stop asking and let's take a break from this relationship."
There's a strong tug on the string, the biggest one she's ever felt, and a loud snap echoes in her ears. All the tension on the string is gone, it feels so much lighter than it ever has been. She looks down and sees that the string is in two pieces. One piece attached to her finger, and the other attached to his. But they're both attached to nothing. His eyes widen as they look at each other.
She sits on the ground, exhausted. She's overcome by confusion. She can't move or think. The string snapped. She's never heard of this happening before. What could this mean? Is she going to die alone now? He follows her lead and takes a seat on the ground.
They stay like that, frozen for what seems like days. But in all actuality, it was only a couple of hours. The only thing that brings them to reality is a knock on the door, the male getting up to open it. He doesn't make it to the door before it gets opened.
"City officials," his voice comes out a whisper, but they don't acknowledge him. They enter the apartment and walk right up to (Y/n).
"Get up," a man with black-hair barks at her. When she doesn't respond to him, he grabs her arm and forces her up. "(Y/n) (L/n), you've broken the law and are hereby banished. You're coming with us."
"What?" the word banished causes her to look around, somehow still lost in her thoughts. "I didn't do anything wrong? What's happening? I don't understand."
"Just shut up," the man ties her hands behind her back. "And listen to what I tell you. You're now considered an outlaw, you're not allowed to step foot back here. Your stuff will be packed up by us and your ex. Anything he wants to keep, he gets to. You're not allowed to complain."
The man pushes her to start moving towards to door. She knows better than to fight them, but she's still confused, "What law did I break?"
As she passes her ex-boyfriend she hears him mumble, "We're no longer soulmates."
