Attack

Vlad the Monk was cooking a rabbit he and the soldiers had captured; he hoped Angelina was eating at least some of it. He knew it wasn't easy for her since she hadn't seen his brother. Vlad the Monk sat before the fire and decided to check on her and baby Radu to see how they were doing. "Keep an eye on the food. I need to visit Lady Angelina." The couple of soldiers sitting before the fire nodded.

Vlad the Monk walked toward the tent. "Angelina, it is I. May I enter."

"You may enter, Lord Vlad. It is I, Sorina."

Confusion set in as he entered the tent. Inside, Sorina and baby Radu were the only ones seen. "Sorina? Where is Angelina?"

Sorina stood and bowed. "Angelina said that she went to relieve herself and told me to keep an eye on Lord Radu."

A bad feeling slowly crept up on the Lord while looking around. "How long has Angelina been gone?"

"Mmm, not too long. I must imagine she needs a little more time to herself."

Vlad the Monk immediately walked out of the tent and called out to Angelina, waiting for a response or a glimpse of her. Nothing. "ANGELINA!?" He then walked into the section where more bushes and trees were calling out to her, but she was nowhere to be seen. He was about to return to command a search party when he heard a rustling noise approaching him. Reading himself by grasping his sword, Vlad the Monk noticed two men whom he recognized: his spies.

"Lord Vlad! We have found you!" one of them yelled. The two men got to their Lord.

"What happened? I imagine you have news regarding my brother's situation."

"Yes, but there is more! It would seem that a woman was eavesdropping on the conversation we had with Lady Ioana! She took one of our horses! Lady Ioana tried to call out to her but the woman rode away, Lady Ioana went after her." One of the soldiers then explained the updates regarding the Sultan and Vlad's armies; Vlad the Monk intently listened, and his stomach grumbled in dread.

It was bad enough that his brother was outnumbered, but now Angelina had gone away while Ioana pursued. Everything was going wrong. He didn't know what to do. He wanted to go after the women since he hypothesized that Angelina was either going to Vlad or, worse, to the Sultan. However, if Vlad the Monk left, then it would put Sorina and baby Radu in danger. "Damn it! I want to-"

Screams echoed, violently flinching the men. They all ran back to the camp; Vlad the Monk knew it was Sorina, and he thought the worst.

"IT'S AN ATTACK! AN ATTACK!" Sorina screamed.

"An attack!? How!?" Vlad the Monk was the first to arrive at the camp and saw arrows and fire flying toward the camp. Catching a glimpse of one of the assailants, Vlad the Monk realized it was a janissary. "Janisaries!?"

Many of his soldiers were dodging, taking cover, or were killed. Vlad the Monk immediately ran to Angelina's tent and called out to Sorina. When he arrived at the tent, he saw that it was blazing. Horrified, Vlad the Monk thought of the worst. Horses were running rapidly, but he could get hold of one of them while trying to dodge many fire-lit arrows flying everywhere. The Janissaries emerged from their hiding spots and clashed with Vlad the Monk's soldiers.

Vlad the Monk got on his horse and called out to Sorina. When there was no response, he was about to leave until he heard a faint cry; it was baby Radu. The infant was still alive, and he went toward the faint cry, which was not too far from the attacked camp. The cries were getting closer and louder until Sorina was seen hiding behind a tree. "Sorina, it is I!"

Sorina immediately walked out of the tree with a crying baby, Radu. "L-Lord Vlad! Thanks be to God! You are safe! We were attacked by Janissaries! I didn't know what else to do but to take the child and hide! Forgive me!"

"Worry not, you did well!" Vlad the Monk got off his horse. "Angelina went away; perhaps going to Targoviste. Ioana followed to try to stop her."

'Wh-What!? That cannot be! Both will surely be killed!" Sorina whimpered.

"You mustn't make too much noise, or it will attract the Janisarries. We must leave." He motioned with his arms and held onto baby Radu. Sorina was then commanded to get on the horse, which she did. "Do you have enough resources with you?"

Sorina had a bag over her shoulder. "I have taken as much as I could. What is your plan? We must get to Angelina and-"

"We cannot."

The young woman violently flinched. "What do you mean that we cannot? Angelina and Ioana are great danger and-"

"What happened here today shows that the Sultan's army is everywhere. My brother has used up many of their resources to slow down the Sultan's army. It would make the Sultan's men desperate, and they would go to many places to achieve it." Vlad the Monk looked behind him, where the fire in the camp shone brightly. He then looked at his nephew, who eventually slept. "I promised my brother that I would protect his family; I failed to keep his wife safe, but I will not fail his son. I will raise and make everyone believe that Radu is my son."

"B-But, Lord Vlad! We can't just-"

"Enough, Sorina! There is nothing we can do for Angelina or Ioana. We have to think of Radu's safety. He is the future. I am sorry to say this, but we can do nothing. We also cannot sit here and wait. The Ottomans are advancing, and we all can be in danger. Angelina and Ioana will be in God's hands now." He motioned for baby Radu to be taken to Sorina, who held onto him. Vlad the Monk got on the horse, where Sorina held onto him with one arm while carrying baby Radu in the other. Vlad the Monk ordered the horse to go forward, but not too quickly so Sorina's grip of Rady wouldn't falter.

Sorina gripped onto Vlad the Monk, but she felt her heart torn to shreds while holding onto the infant. Tears dripped as she realized she might never see Angelina or Ioana again.
