Chapter 32

The scouts continued to release their battle cry, distracting the beast titan and his pawns. However, Kaya found it was also a way of distracting themselves from their own mission, the suicide charge. The ghoul knew the odds were against her from the beginning, she just cradled onto the glimpse of hope she would get out of this war alive.

"Charge!" Erwin shouted, repeating his words to continue to encourage the others.

"Huh, I did expect them to lead on and die, but, a suicide charge? For some reason I thought they'd do better." The beast titan spoke, only allowing those with enhanced hearing to be able to translate his distant observation. The ghoul glared at the beast from afar, he couldn't see her true eyes yet but he would have every opportunity to look upon her when she and him were to come toe-to-toe.

"Alright, fire!" Erwin ordered, each scout drawing their flare gun to fire their smoke signals.

"Is that smoke? Oh, it's from those signal guns they use." The beast added, lifting another attack onto his shoulder.

"Incoming, spread out!" The commander demanded. Everyone complied, separating themselves from one another to prepare for their fate. "And as we ride to certain death, we trust our successors to do the same for us! Because my soldiers do not buckle or yield when faced with the cruelty of this world! My soldiers push forward! My soldiers scream out! My soldiers RAGE!" The commander shouted, inspiring all who were losing their courage.

Unfortunately, his words meant nothing to the beast titan, he didn't even hesitate before launching another array of rocks towards the scouts. Every pebble caused a new scent of anguish to enter the ghouls senses, her comrades, her friends, they were all dying around her. Yet she could do nothing but stick to the plan. Erwin looked Kaya in the eyes before he began to fall, he looked frustrated that it had to end this way, frustrated that he had so many unanswered questions. The only thing he could have possibly been grateful for was that just as said, he was the first to die.

The first rock had been thrown, it was only a matter of time until the beast reloaded on ammo, someone had to take charge of the survivors, the thief reluctantly took the job.

"The commander!" Floch shouted.

"The mission isn't over, we need to keep pushing forwards. For humanity!" Kaya yelled at the top of her lungs. The soldiers mimicked her salute and rode through the green smoke they had earlier provided.

"How sad, to be deprived of a chance to learn from the past, king Reiss stole their memories of the outside world and this is the tragic result. They're doomed to make the same foolish mistake and in the end, all of them will ride to their deaths. Young and old pouring out of the walls in a suicide charge. Because if they're going to die, they may as well do so proudly, what bullshit!" The beast titan degraded their acts, his grip tightened on his new weapons. "Huh, I crushed it into dust? Haha, what's gotten into me? Why am I getting so worked up? Their not like before remember, you need to find joy when you can. So now, I'll turn them all into proud little chunks of meat."

Kaya was confused by his first statement, she knew king Reiss took their memories but no one knew of their past of the outside world either. However, now wasn't the time to dwell on the enemies rambling, another volley was on its way.

"The second volleys here, fire and split up!" The ghoul repeated what Erwin would have ordered, the recruits easily following her orders out of respect and worry.

The beast titan threw another boulder their way, rocks piercing into the souls of the anguished soldiers of the scouts. This time, Kaya hadn't come off unscathed, multiple rocks embedded themselves into her practically unbreakable skin. She winced in pain but it soon wouldn't matter, as long as her horse was still functional she could continue the charge. Her wounds would heal soon anyways.

"Hah, game over. Haha, how'd you like that? I thought I'd change up the pitch a little. I call that a shut out." The beast cheered, raising his hands into the air in triumph.

"Cmon, don't give up now! Survivors, maintain course!" Kaya instructed, resulting in yet another battle cry form the recruits. "Fire!" She yelled once again, followed by the smoke signals dying the air green.

"Foolish, you really think those little toys are going to help?" The beast said, irritated by the retaliation. "And all that screaming, what good could that possibly do?!" It added, another bombardment of rocks traveled into the group.

Kaya's horse was down, but that didn't mean she was immobilised. "If anyone's left, we have to continue, cmon." She alerted, running up the hill to face the enemy.

"How sad, you poor pathetic things." The beast stated, until he saw a singular person sprint towards him. "You're still going? What could you possibly gain by this?" The beast asked. Kaya ignored him, she didn't need a giant monkey to lecture her about determination or honour.

"I suppose I could offer a more painful death for you, the soul survivor." He said, signalling the titans on his left to attack the ghoul.

Kaya smirked, these titans had nothing on her, she'd trained using both her ODM gear and her kagune, they didn't stand a chance. "Come and get me." She mocked.

The titans that had been sent her way were large, some even looked abnormal but they didn't worry her, she only hoped Levi would hurry up and fulfil his side of the mission. The first titan lunged towards her, not showing a shred of mercy so neither did Kaya. She attached both her hooks onto its lower stomach before swirling herself between its legs and using her gas to position herself just behind the nape. Slice, one down. The other titans didn't hesitate, but now she had the high ground, a clear advantage. The thief jumped onto the second titans shoulders, not giving it a moment to bite her before she killed it.

After killing another 6 of the beasts titans, the shifter began to grow angry. "Pieck." He turned to the smaller titan. "Deal with her."

The titan who Kaya assumed to be Pieck dived into action. It's titan was fast, moving on four legs to assist its speed with agility. Unlike the other titans, this one made no attempts to eat the ghoul, she wasn't used to this strange fighting style but she could cope. However, to even the odds, Kaya placed her blades back into their holsters, looking at Pieck with her blood red irises and smiling. Next, the ghoul activated her kagune, letting herself get lifted above the ground by her own power.

"How about we actually get started now?" Kaya teased. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a green cape fly past, she assumed it was Levi and from then on, her only job was the keep the cart titan away from the beast. The thief brought out her swords once again and used her gear to spin in circles around her opponent. Kaya sliced at every limb she had access to, unfortunately, the titans head shape made it difficult for her to get in close and cut the nape, so she compromised.

"Zeke! I need backup!" The titan yelled.

Kaya rolled her eyes. "Calling for backup so soon? I haven't even had the chance to make you feel the same way you made my comrades feel. Wouldn't want to delay that, would we?" The ghoul said, shooting towards Piecks backup before it could reach. Kaya copied Levi's actions, swirling around in circular motions and using her kagune to both enhance her speed and as a weapon of destruction against her enemies. All three titans approaching the scene were immediately decimated, Kaya killed them all with one move of her ODM gear. Whatever her swords failed to slice, her kagune compensated.

The cart tried to use the distraction to its advantage, sneaking up behind Kaya to launch its attack. Little did it know that Kaya could hear its footsteps like a melody, she never lost track. Swiftly, Kaya used two of her kagune spikes to plunge into the carts eyes, rendering it blind against the ghoul.

"Looks like I'm gonna have to get through that stuff on your shoulders if I'm planning on reaching the nape." Kaya observed. Walking over the the cart that was dashing in all directions in attempt to catch her before she made contact. "How am I supposed to kill you if you keep thrashing around like a lunatic? Help me out here Pieck." The ghoul joked.

The ghoul attached her hooks onto the cart titans supplies, making it so it couldn't feel her attack until it was too late. Once Kaya had landed, she put on a sadistic smile, before cutting the nape and destroying the titan. Or so she thought. The thief smiled in accomplishment, her only regret was that she failed to make the cart suffer more than it did.

Steam began to escape from the titans corpse, covering the surrounding area in a white cover. Kaya sighed in relief, she'd just killed a titan shifter and made it out alive, she was so caught up in her own triumph that she didn't even notice a feminine figure sneaking up behind her. The ghouls eyes darted towards the beast titan, she knew Levi was purposely taking his time, just like what she planned to do, hesitantly, she slowly walked away from the titan corpse and towards Levi to help back him up.

That's when her life flashed before her eyes, along with yellow lighting bolts, hopping from surface to surface. Kaya made a grave mistake by not checking if the user was dead too, her main focus was towards the titan. Pieck took her revenge, snapping her jaw shut on the ghoul and swallowing before she got the chance to retaliate.

Was she dead? Who knows? A normal human being could never survive being eaten alive, however, Kaya wasn't your average human.
