18 Who We Love and Who We Are

I am sorry for those who do not support my views on marriage laws and rights. If this is a problem for you, then do not read. This book is a reflection of my views, experiences, and bits of plot I create in the strange place that is my mind. I am not sorry for what I believe. We have freedom of Speech and Press. Thank you.

Why do people always need
A group to hate and kill?
Ethnicity, sexuality, religion, or country
There's always someone to blame
A punching bag
A scapegoat

Why don't we try to understand
Those religions we don't?
The culture we don't?
Those people we don't?
Because if we do not strive for enlightenment
We always turn to fear
And hatred
And war

Why do we throw the blame
Like a child's game of hot potato?
We don't want to believe that
Society's problems are the fault of society
And not just the next person over
The person whose different
Unique
Their own

Why must we attack
Those whose views we don't agree with?
Can we not simply accept who they are
What they look like
And who they love?

Why do we say that we are advanced
Enlightened, civilized, tamed
If we judge all people by the first seven seconds we know them?
If we cannot marry who we want to?
If we cannot be accepted as we are?

And I'll bet
In another hundred years
When we all get around
In flying cars and rocket ships
We will hear in the news
About the next problem
The next punching bag
The next scapegoat

And there will always be the persecutors
Who speak like they're our saving grace
Our messiah
Our Deliverer
When all of their power
Comes from their own racism
And the fear of their followers

Because we always need
Someone to blame
We always point fingers
And say that it's him
It's her
It's them
We never say
That it's me
It's mine
It's us

Why must we try to force change?
Won't people accept it easier it if it is peacefully encouraged?
We can try to change those views we don't believe in
But in the end,
Chaining them up
And beating your views into them
Will just make them reject it more
And prove your rivals' point

Why do we not live in peace?
I believe that the solution does not lie in the equality of all people
But in the acceptance of all people
And the open minds of everyone on this Earth

And to each their own. . .
