Ch 11

Dick's eyelids felt like weights as his eyes slid open. He groaned and stretched, sitting up and looking around. 'Where am I?' He wondered, standing up and walking around the familiar-looking room.

It only took Dick a few minutes to figure out that he was in his old room in Wayne Manor. It definitely didn't look like it did when he'd left for Jump city...

'Why am I here?' Dick thought. The last thing he could remember was responding to an alert with the titans... then there was that magic blast that he was hit with...

'Why am I taller?' Dick thought, looking in the mirror and noticing the physical changes that had happened to his body.

While he was looking in the mirror, Dick's attention was drawn to the clothes he was wearing. 'These are Bruce's clothes...'

Confusing thoughts and questions swirled in Dick's head as he tried to sort out what was going on.

Dick only noticed the IV line that was draining fluids into him when he walked too far away from his bed and felt a tugging on his arm. That was also when Dick noticed the various other medical equipment that was attached to him.

Returning to his bed, Dick carefully removed the pulse oximeter from his finger. He then detached the IV line from his arm and took off the sticky pads that belonged to the heart monitor.

Once he was free from the various medical equipment, Dick did a series of stretches and exercises, testing out each joint and muscle to see if there was anything wrong with him that would warrant being stuck in a bed with monitors all over him. He quickly concluded that it was probably just Bruce being what Wally would always refer to as 'Daddy Bats'.

Dick finally stilled, looking at himself in the mirror. The question that weighed heavily on his mind was, 'Why do I look so much older than I remembered?'

Deciding not to simply wait for someone to come and explain what was going on to him, Dick silently slid the door open and slipped out into the hall, heading straight for the batcave.

On his way down to the cave, Dick stopped to take in the differences in the spacious rooms of the manor that he walked through.

The house was dark, but Dick was still able to see what looked like a few child's toys, as well as many new photos on the walls. Some of the photos were of Jason, but many were of a child he didn't recognize. "Did Bruce take in some other orphan?" He whispered under his breath.

Dick was surprised to find even more toys scattered around in the batcave when he got down there. He walked around, taking in everything around him. His heart caught in his throat when he walked past a glass case that was holding the small uniform he wore while he was with the titans. Something that definitely wouldn't fit him now, no matter how much he tried to squeeze into it.

The roaring of the batmobile's engine startled Dick out of his thoughts, making him literally jump into the air. He turned towards the shiny, black car and found that a small smile had made its way onto his face.

The doors to the batmobile opened, and Dick's smile fell from his face as he saw Jason emerge from the passenger's side, wearing his Robin costume.

Jason's costume wasn't exactly the same as Dick's, one thing being that it was a slightly different size, with long, tight sleeves as opposed to the loose, short ones Dick had worn.

Dick clenched his jaw and his hands balled up into fists.

"You're awake." Bruce said, pulling down his cowl and walking over to Dick with a smile on his face. The smile dropped off of the older man's face when he noticed the scowl on Dick's face, and the defensive position he had taken up.

Bruce followed Dick's gaze to Jason, who was standing next to him.

"What... what..." Dick said, breathing slightly faster and gesturing to Jason.

"I'm Robin now." Jason said with a slight smirk. "I have been for the past 4 years or so."

Dick stumbled back as if he'd been struck. "F-four years?" He whispered, confusion mixing into his expression. He shook his head, as if trying to clear the thought from his mind. "You can't be Robin." He said, voice firm.

"Sorry to break it to you Dickie, but I already am Robin, your days as the Boy Wonder are long gone." Jason said, voice carrying a hint of a mocking tone.

"You are NOT Robin, and you never will be. I am Robin." Dick growled, advancing towards Jason who cowered away from his extremely angry older brother.

Dick was stopped by Bruce's hand on his shoulder. "Dick, stop." Bruce said, forcing a calming tone into his voice.

"Stop? How can you expect me to just... just..." A tear slid down Dick's cheek as he looked Bruce in the eyes. "You knew what Robin meant to me. You knew that I was Robin, that I made Robin... So why? Why would you let him take that?" Dick said, voice rising as more tears spilled down his cheeks.

"Dickie..." Bruce said, reaching forward to wrap his oldest in a hug.

"No." Dick said, moving away from Bruce.

"Dick!" Bruce shouted at his son, but it was too late. Dick had already snatched a spare domino mask that had been lying on a table, and a pair of keys. He hopped onto a black motorcycle, and drove it out of the cave and into the night.

Dick stopped the motorcycle when he got into Jump city. He stared at the giant T shaped tower, wondering what had happened, and how much had changed with his old team. A long sigh escaped from Dick's lips as he pressed the domino mask he'd taken from the batcave over his eyes before starting the bike back up and heading toward Titan's tower.

Everything in the tower looked almost exactly the same as it had on the last day Dick remembered, which gave him at least a small sense of comfort. He cautiously made his way to his old room, hoping he'd be able to avoid seeing anyone in the hallways.

The room that had belonged to Dick during his time in Jump slid open easily when he entered his short pin into the number lock. Everything inside, other than the thick layer of dust that coated everything, looked just as Dick remembered it.

Dick walked over to his closet and moved aside all of the dusty Robin suits, revealing a small safe. This was what he'd come for. He grabbed the safe and scooted it out into the middle of the room, also grabbing a duffel bag from the floor of his closet while he was at it.

The contents of the safe spilled into the duffel bag, Dick not even bothering to go through any of it. He wanted to get in and get out, hopefully avoiding any interaction with the Titans.

Dick walked around the room, grabbing anything he thought he'd need, frowning when he noticed that all of his clothing was now too small for him. He'd have to make due with the baggy t-shirt and sweatpants that he was currently dressed in.

Once the duffel bag was filled, and the room was empty of everything Dick thought he would need, he zipped it up and slung it back over his shoulder, scooting the safe back to its previous position, and sneaking out of the tower.

Dick sped down the highway. 'Where should I go now?' He asked himself. He definitely wasn't going back to either the tower or the manor.

'I could try and find Wally or Roy...' Dick thought, letting the idea float around in his head for a few moments before he shut it down. It would be nice to see his friends, but they would probably report him to Bruce.

For a moment, Dick's thoughts shifted to Jason, and by extension, Robin. Tears stung in his eyes, gathering in the corners. Robin had been so important to him... for Bruce to just give that away... it was cruel... Didn't Bruce care about how that would make Dick feel?

Dick slowed, and pulled the motorcycle off to the side of the rural road, stopping it, and getting off. He knew Bruce had a tracker somewhere on this thing, and he really didn't want him to trace him... not when he was trying to get a new start.

The tracker wasn't too hard to find, but getting it off proved to be a much more difficult matter. Dick was finally able to unattach it, and he left the tech lying on the side of the road, crushing it under his motorcycle's tires as he drove away.

Dick had finally figured out where he needed to go. Somewhere without a vigilante to protect it... Somewhere the crime could be said to rival that of Gotham itself. Dick was going to Blüdhaven.
