Chapter 16
3 weeks later...
So Darren and I are finally a couple. Every date we've went on he'd ask me the same question and I finally accepted.
Of course after getting to know him a little better.
Today he wants me to meet his mom and I'm so nervous, I feel like things are going way too fast, I mean it's only been a week since we started dating but he insists.
I've never had a man go this crazy for me before, it's kinda weird but it feels good to have all the focus on me and no one else.
The door bell rings indicating the arrival of Darren.
I walk over to the door, opening it.
"Hey baby" he pulls me by my waist kissing me.
"Hey" I hold on to his neck deepen the kiss. He pulls out chuckling lightly. "You ready?"
"Let me just get my purse, it's on the couch" He simply nods standing at the frame of the door. As I walk to him I give him a puppy dog face. I'm honestly nervous and the least he should do is leave me with his mom so we can "bond". Craig did this, and it didn't end off so well.
"Promise me, you won't leave me alone" he chuckles rubbing my cheek.
"My mom doesn't bite Jan"
"I know, I'm just nervous"
"Don't be, she'll love you"
"I hope so." I look down. I remember when I had to meet Craig's mom, and how she total hated me. She liked Chrissan better and she thought I was a hoe for "taking" her man and having his child.
"Baby don't you think it's too early for this though" I ask getting more nervous as he begins to drive.
"Well it is but my mom really wants to know who is behind my happiness. Every time I think about you, I just lose myself and-" I blush, I never knew I had such an effect on him. He looked over at me and smirked . "- I know it's weird but I can't help it, I really am feeling you"
I kiss his cheek.
"It's not weird, it's cute"
*
We arrive at the house and my heart begins to pound. Darren opens the door and the smell of Turkey fills the house.
"Mom I'm-"
"My baby" she runs towards Darren squeezing the life out of him. "And you must be the girl I heard so much about-" she comes over to hug me.
"Oh please take a seat baby, the food will be ready in just a second. Anything to drink?"
"No, I'm fin-"
"You can't say no when she offers you something, especially being my girlfriend" I nod taking a seat on the couch.
"So what's your name?" She asks. I look over at Darren with a confused look, how you gonna tell your mama about me And not mention my name..what the hell?
"J-Janelle ma'am"
"Please call me Diana-" she says taking a seat on the opposite couch. "- Girl you do not know the amount of happiness you've brought into his life. You must be very special because Darren here can't keep a woman" I smile.
"Thank you"
"So Darren tells me you have a son, what's his name?"
"Troy"
"He's six right?" I nod.
"You know I've always wanted a grandchild, I'm only waiting for Darren here to-"
Darren phone starts to ring and he looks at me mouthing ' it's important' before heading into a narrow hallway.
Great, just great.
"Alright, are you hungry? The turkey should be done cooking by now"
"What about Darren? Isn't he going to eat with us?"
"Oh darling, don't worry about him. I'll fix him a plate but he'll join us a little later" I nod nervously. I really don't want to be at that table alone with her.
What if she asks me questions that are way too personal? Who would help me?
I remember when Craig's mom bombarded me with questions, that had me so close to wetting myself.
I want things to go right with Darren. I really do.
"So what is your occupation?"
"Um I-I'm planning to be a social worker ma'am, I mean Ms. Diana"
"Social worker hm, a typical black woman job, Ok." she nods, as I take a bite of the mash potatoes. This is exactly what I didn't want judgement. "how come you haven't yet done so?"
"I'm still in school"
"School? It doesn't take much to be a social worker. How old are you?" She asks.
"Um...I-I'm twenty one"
"And your son is six, that means-" she rolls her eyes to the top of her head, doing, what I assume is mental math "-you had him at fifteen"
"Y-yes m-ma'am"
"So basically you're a drop out?" I didn't answer, I just jab my fork into the potatoes, playing with the food. It's so embarrassing to be known as a drop out.
There was an awkward silence before she broke it.
"It's okay-" she says realizing that she may have hurt me "-I had Darren at twenty five, which at the time was too young for my parents so you know I didn't get to finish college entirely, so I understand." Was that suppose to be uplifting? Cause honestly it just makes me feel worst. I mean at least she was able to make it to college. Twenty-five isn't even that bad of an age to have a child. I really don't think she understands.
"But I do want the best for my son and I do hope that when you get married you can support him finically"
Marriage? I've only dated Darren for a week and we're already talking about marriage? I scoff lightly before nodding.
"So how did you get your high school diploma?"
"Um a-after my s-son, I did the mandatory courses onli-"
"Okay, I'm back" Darren says walking into the kitchen. I sigh in relief, finally.
"No one cares" Diana says chuckling at his reaction.
"Boy hush, go get your food in the microwave" he laughs a little heading to the microwave.
He sits beside me, as his mother and him start laughing about his childhood memories. I couldn't really relate because most of the time, I didn't see my parents. Both very successful people who barely ever had time for us, their kids.
I just sit there smiling.
*
"Alright. I think it's time to go, ready baby?"
"Yeah, it was nice meeting you Ms. Diana" I say as she waves at me smiling, while washing the dishes.
"Bye mama" Darren says kissing her cheek. As he jogs over to the front door where I was and we head out to the car.
"So how did you enjoy it?" He asks.
"It was fine" I shrug.
"Are you sure?" I nod. "What was so important that you had to take so long on the phone?" He chuckles softly.
"Baby, it was a business call"
"Hm, well I don't really think your mom likes me"
"There it is, I knew something was bothering you...and why do you think that"
"I just feel like she doesn't. They way she acted when you weren't there proves everything. She acts like she likes me because of you"
"Baby don't think like that. She likes you, don't worry." Before I knew it, I was in front of my house. He kisses my cheek, with that I exit the car.
Another horrible first impression on the mother.
Darren's POV
I drive back to my mom's house, to get my stuff. I've been staying in her place for a little while now, it does get lonely for just her at times.
"Back so soon?"
"Her house is not that far from here." She nods. "So mama, what you think of her?"
"She's fine, but she's jobless and I'm not really fond of you taking care of another man's child, you know that. You could have done better than that Darren." I nod.
"But I told you she had a child, you didn't think much of it then"
"Yes, because I thought she had a job and wouldn't use you for her baby daddy's duties"
"Hey! At the end of the day mama, I'm just trying to make you happy"
