Chapter 2

Eleanor and Skylar bounced happily off the bus. They lined up with the rest of the class at the back of the line, talking about how the sleepover that weekend would be the best one yet.

"We'll stay up 'till midnight!" Eleanor said with a big smile.

"Past!" Skylar replied. They both rambled on through the hallway until they walked into the class. Science posters were posted all over every wall and there was the one saying, "I heard oxygen and magnesium were going out and I was like OMG!" Eleanor and Skylar sat on opposite sides of the classroom which was really boring and sad. They spent the first hour in science, but then moved on to social studies! Social studies were one of Eleanor's favorite classes. About half-way through the lesson, Skylar raised her hand.

"Yes?" Mrs. Radarian said.

"May I grab my book from science? I left it in my cubby."

"You have two minutes." Eleanor wondered what Skylar needed to do. Skylar wasn't a big fan of reading, and she definitely didn't carry a book around with her. Eleanor asked to use the restroom so she could see what Skylar was really up to.

Eleanor walked out the door and peered down the hallway. Eleanor was just in time to see Skylar walk into the bathroom. Why didn't Skylar just ask to use the restroom if that's where she is going? Eleanor thought. Eleanor walked down the hallway and put her ear to the door.

"What in the world?" Skylar said. Eleanor heard a stifled sob and immediately rushed into the bathroom. Skylar was standing at the second sink which was burnt and charred under Skylar's hands.

"Skylar?! What just happened? Why is the bathroom sink burnt?!" Skylar turned her head to look at Eleanor. Her face was red and blotchy from crying.

"I set it on fire..." Skylar said. Eleanor's mouth dropped open like a snake's when it is eating large prey.

"Why would you set in on fire, Sky?" Eleanor shook her head. "How?" Skylar sobbed again. Eleanor walked a few steps closer and rubbed Skylar's shoulder. "What's up?"

Skylar took a shaky breath. "In social studies, my pencil burned to a shriveled stick the second... I .... touched it." Eleanor was still confused. "I came to the bathroom and when I was about to run my hands under cold water... the sink, it....burned!" Eleanor was even more confused than before.

"But, how? You've gotta be playing some kind of prank on me, Sky. This, whatever this is, is crazy and irrational. Let's just forget about it and go back to class!" Eleanor looked in the mirror at Skylar. Skylar was looking back. "Maybe you set a sink on fire," Eleanor said. "But you," Eleanor touched the mirror and stumbled back. The second Eleanor's finger touched the mirror, it froze.

"How did you do that?!" Skylar said with an alarmed voice. "The mirror is covered in.. ice !" Eleanor looked at her hands.

"I don't know. But as I said before, I think we should get back to class. Quick!" Skylar nodded and pushed in front of Eleanor.

"Don't touch the door! Use your shoulder." Skylar pushed it open for Eleanor. They both walked back to class and sat down. Mrs. Radarian continued with the lesson.

"Before the Civil War, there was an old folk's tale about two girls who had unbelievable abilities," The class oohed and aahed. "Nobody knew their names. But one of the girls had the power to set things on fire, basically control it. They say she's the one who set the fire to Mr. Seva's house. he was a mean old man who tortured his slaves worse than any other slaveowner in the country. Mr. Seva had a daughter who was best friends with the girl with fire powers. We'll call her Fire. Fire and the daughter were inseparable and were always talking together. But one day, Fire had gone over to Mr. Seva's house for dinner. Around sunset, the house mysteriously caught fire, and Fire ran out with the daughter screaming, "Help!! Fire! Fire!!!" The daughter had taken in a lot of smoke and could barely stand up straight. Fire tried to help but everything she touched caught on fire or burned. Fire ran away long before the fire was put out. They never saw her again. The fire was huge. The daughter was lying right near a flame, and nobody noticed she was lying there. One old woman says she swore that the daughter put her hand out to the flame, and it froze. The heat from the fire melted it, and no one else saw it. The daughter died the next day, and Fire was never seen again." The school bell rang. "Alright, we'll come back tomorrow and study some more folktales from the nineteenth century!"

Eleanor and Skylar quickly gathered their things and ran to each other.

"Did you hear that?" Eleanor said. "One girl could set things on fire! Like you did in the bathroom! The other girl seemed to have frozen the flame? Like I froze the mirror! Don't you see? We're the girls in the story!" Skylar shook her head.

"Those girls died two hundred years ago! We were probably just daydreaming or something. Remember, Mrs. Radarian said it was just an old folk's tale. Not real."  Eleanor still could see the worry in Skylar's eyes.
