5: Bird Talk

"It's not that hard if you put your back into it," Xavier laughed as Victoria tugged on the bow in her arms.

She'd spent the past four hours trying out every club, but Xavier had purposely redirected her when they encountered the choir club located in the Quad. She tried beekeeping, which was not her cup of tea. Bat-minton–which was full of the most hardcore and trained students, swim club–mostly sirens and she couldn't swim to save her life anyway, the band club–she could read notes, but didn't have an instrument (besides for the unused piano in her room that she was too afraid to touch), and more she had lost track of.

So her last choice on the elimination list was to stick with archery until she had a change of heart. After all, she had until after the Poe Cup event to decide.

"That's easy for you to say, you've been doing this for years," Victoria said, exasperated. "Can we give it a break? I'm not feeling well."

She was being honest. The food that Enid had bought her was beginning to make her stomach churn uncomfortably.

"I'll give you ten minutes," Xavier said, his eyes trailing off of her. "I'm expecting short company soon anyway."

She nodded and left, passing Wednesday as she walked by. She made her way inside to the nearest girl's restroom. The restrooms have showers and toilets with enough privacy for each of the outcast students. She found herself over a toilet bowl again. It was her first time throwing up since the Harvest Festival incident, which was only a few days ago. Otherwise, she had been doing well.

She just couldn't help it.

It was her act of redemption.

She rinsed her mouth with water before leaving the restroom to meet Xavier again with an unhappy expression on his face while Wednesday interrogated him. She then threw an apple into the air and shot an arrow, perfectly hitting the bullseye of the target.

"Pretty and perfect," Victoria thought. "Unbelievable."

The same feeling grew, but a ripple of relief died it down, as Tyler wasn't there to make her feel more aware. To make her feel more conscious. Whether they knew it or not, he fueled her actions.

Wednesday then turned her heel and slowly came to a stop by Victoria's shoulders, taking Victoria by a little surprise. She had never spoken with Wednesday, so what would she want to discuss now?

"You were friends with Rowan," Wednesday said.

"Yeah, I suppose," Victoria said. "But not close enough for him to let me know he was leaving the school, I guess... but a little bird told me you think he died."

"Hm," Wednesday hummed curiously. "And what of the little bird's message? I couldn't care less if you believe me or not."

Victoria inhaled. "As a matter of fact, I believe you. I was there when it happened."

Wednesday seemed to be taken aback by this. "I thought- I was told you don't remember anything? But I suppose you don't want to sound like a nut job."

"I didn't tell Sheriff Galpin anything because there was no evidence of his murder yet. I just hadn't had time to focus on what happened. The monster's still out there, but the attack seemed personal, considering it kept both of us alive," Victoria noted, then remembered a very important fact. "Wait, his wallet!"

"What about his wallet?" Wednesday asked.

"Rowan dropped it and I was going to return it to him, but-" she paused. Every atom in her body didn't want to bring Tyler into the conversation. Or rather, give Wednesday more of a motive to be in Tyler's presence. "-He disappeared before I got a chance."

"When?"

"When the fireworks went off, I followed him into the forest," Victoria lied once again. Although, the facts added up in her favor. "Then I only saw that he was being clawed up by that... that monster. Its bulging eyes and vast figure was so large, I could see it from afar. And then I saw you before I passed out."

Wednesday seemed like she wanted to add something, but Xavier interrupted them when he shouted for Victoria's attention.

"Ten minutes up, Halliwell," Xavier declared.

Wednesday side eyed him before turning her attention back to Victoria with a stern and promising tone.

"The Quad, thirty after nine," she ordered, inspecting the girl up and down. "Don't be late."

It was forty after nine when Victoria found herself crawling through the window of Xavier Thorpe's dorm.

"I can't believe I'm doing this," Victoria said to Wednesday and a bodiless hand named Thing. "This is trespassing, an invasion of privacy. We're violating a few laws here, Wednesday."

Wednesday only ignored her worries and said, "Think of it like an inventory check."

"What exactly are we looking for?" Victoria asked quietly.

"Anything that implies Rowan was hiding something," Wednesday said, pausing to show something to Victoria hesitantly. She unfolded a piece of paper that revealed the Quad on fire with a girl who looked exactly like Wednesday, facing a faceless villain dressed like a pilgrim.

"What in the world?"

"My exact thoughts. Rowan gave it to me before he tried to kill me."

"You never mentioned he tried to kill you."

"You never asked."

Victoria only rolled her eyes when she began to search in all of Rowan's drawers, which were revealed to be empty.

"I'm surprised you agreed to help search through Xavier's room," Wednesday said.

"Why's that?"

"A little bird told me you've got plans together."

Victoria sighed. She and Xavier hadn't gone on their date yet, but Enid had posted that he had an anonymous someone he was beginning to fall for. She couldn't find herself to fully believe it though, as Enid was known to be very bubbly–creating an exaggeration in her blogs.

She rummaged through a few cabinets when heard the water shut off, meaning they had very little time left.

"Oh, screw this," Victoria muttered under her breath. "Revelio."

Wednesday watched with clutched amazement as fingerprints began to appear on the floorboards. They quickly followed it, seeing that it led under Rowan's bed. Quickly lifting the floorboard, Wednesday's eyes widened when Victoria revealed stacks of unused polaroids. Along with a simple eye mask.

"Rowan is full of surprises," Wednesday mumbled.

They heard a knock at the door and a rattle, making Victoria flee under Rowan's bed while Wednesday slipped under Xavier's. Thing quickly joined Wednesday as Xavier opened the door with an unwelcoming smile towards Bianca.

Victoria had never met Bianca before, but she wasn't liking her reputation, just as much as she wasn't liking the things she did. In her opinion, she was very egoistic, but she was not to be determined about things because not everyone walked in the same shoes.

Bianca welcomed herself in the room, starting a conversation about how her team was going to win the Poe Cup. She then angrily remarked, "Because Wednesday thinks she's better than everyone else!"

Wednesday practically scoffed.

"You used to love me," Bianca said. "We were good together."

Wednesday and Victoria locked eyes, feeling the same unsteadiness in their stomach. Not a sickening unsteadiness, but a grossed-out unsteadiness. This was not a conversation one would want to eavesdrop on.

Victoria's phone suddenly chimed, making her and Wednesday tense and freeze in place.

"And I bet that's your little ghost now," Bianca said, assuming it was Xavier's phone.

With a relief, Victoria quietly checked her phone to see who the culprit was that almost got them caught. An unknown number with a message that read, "Couldn't keep waiting. I got your number from a little bird."

Without doubt, she knew who it was.

Including where all the little bird talk was coming from. It was undoubtedly Enid.

To their luck, Bianca and Xavier did nothing more than talking as Wednesday and Victoria shared a relieved expression.

Somewhere around eleven, they got back to Enid and Wednesday's shared dorm. Victoria was surprised to see Enid upset on her bed as she looked hysterical.

"What's the matter?" Victoria asked with concern.

Enid sat up, revealing her red and exasperated face. "Garlic incident at dinner! Yoko's in the infirmary so she can't make it to the Poe Cup!"

"Bianca," Wednesday and Victoria chorused, unsurprised, eyeing each other.

Wednesday stands calmly. "We're going to take her down tomorrow."

"How?" Enid asked, giving her a confused look as Wednesday looked over at Victoria.

"Why, magic of course."
