Chapter 49- Daniel's POV

Roger frowned and narrowed his eyes while he looked at my mom. "Are you sure?" he asked, and she nodded in confirmation. "How?"

She shrugged and rubbed her belly with a small tired smirk on her face before she bit a tired sigh. "I have my ways," she said before she cleared her throat and shifted in her wheelchair. "Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to say."

I pressed my lips into a thin line and narrowed my eyes while I stared at her, trying but failing to see what she was hiding. "Mom," I said, not able to keep the warning out of my tone.

My mom looked at me and shook her head, biting back a small smile. "Again, I am not able to say anything about my ways, Daniel." She sighed and moved a hand across her belly with a small grimace on her voice. "Let's just say that I have been trying to... research stuff that should help us..."

"And what type of stuff were you researching?" Roger asked and pressed his lips into a thin line while he raised an eyebrow in question.

Mom smiled sadly and shook her head. "That's one of the things that I cannot mention."

"And why not?"

Mom bit back a tired sigh and leaned back in her wheelchair while she rubbed her belly some more. "Because it could lead to people's death," she replied with a small hum in her voice while she tucked her head closer to her chest, "and that includes mine."

"Jessica," Dad warned, and Mom looked at him and offered him a tight smile. He tucked his head closer to his chest and said something to her through the bond they shared without us having to hear it as well.

Mom smiled and tucked her head closer to her chest. Her eyes turned a darker gray and became filled with sorrow and pain, and I couldn't help but frown because I did not like the look on her face.

Finally, Mom sighed and slowly nodded, pressing her lips into a thin line. "So, one thing that I can share and did find out is that my body is attacking itself," she said softly while she rubbed her body. "Both genes are active now but not active, if that makes sense."

I stared at her with a blank look on my face and slowly blinked. I didn't say a word because I had no idea what she meant and wondered why she was saying it like that as if it would make sense.

Everyone must have given her a blank look because my mother chuckled and tucked her head closer to her chest while she stared at them. No one said a word and waited for her to say something else and explain what she meant.

Mom cleared her throat and shifted in the wheelchair and bit back a small tired sigh, rubbing her belly. "So, you know how I am a wolf and hunter hybrid, correct?" She raised an eyebrow in question while she studied them.

"Yes," we said and nodded in confirmation.

"We know that, Mom," I said, and she nodded with a small, tired smile on her face. I frowned and furrowed my brows while I cocked my head and studied her. "What does that have to do with anything?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question.

She sighed and leaned back in her wheelchair and rubbed her belly. "So, my genes weren't supposed to be "woken up" when they were, Roger." She gave Roger a look that had him look down with his lips pressed into a thin line before she looked at us again.

The hair on the back of my neck stood at attention, and my heart skipped a beat before it pounded hard and fast in my chest. "What do you mean, Mom?" I asked and furrowed my brows while I cocked my head and studied her. "What happened?"

She bit back a small sigh and moved a hand through her hair and shook her head. She cleared her throat and shifted in her wheelchair some more. "Do you remember that I had been attacked by three Rogues, Daniel?" she asked and raised an eyebrow in question, and I nodded in confirmation because I did.

"I do," I said. I furrowed my brows and cocked my head further to the side, and my heart ached because I still remembered how I felt when she had moved away and lived with her father and brother. "I remember that, and I still do not like it at all."

Mom bit back a small laugh and slowly nodded. "Yes," she said. "I did not like that at all, but such is life." She shrugged and grimaced, biting back a small sigh. "Anyway, my genes were woken up when the Rogues attacked my home and I fought them. However, they weren't woken up fully so that they could... be united and work together."

"And is there a way for them to be working together?" I asked and furrowed my brows while I cocked my head and studied her. "Right?"

"There is," she said and nodded in confirmation, "and they wouldn't be attacking each other, but that is a story for another time," she said and cleared her throat while she leaned forward just a tad, and a look of pain flashed across her face.

My father frowned and moved to her side. He rubbed her back and gave her a glance over to make sure that my sister wasn't about to be born yet before he looked at her again. He didn't say a word that I could hear, and I had a feeling that they were talking to each other through their mindlink.

My mate pressed her lips into a thin line and shifted next to me, and I couldn't help but look at her. She didn't say a word, and a look of fear and worry flashed through her eyes.

Could this happen to her too?

"Mom?" I asked, concerned for not only my mother but my mate as well. "Are you ok?"

My mom waved me off and took another deep breath before she released it with a small whoosh and moved a hand across her belly. "I'm ok," she said, her voice barely above a whisper, and a look of pain flashed across her face. "I think that it might be for the best that I go to the pack doctor, though."

I frowned, and worry blossomed inside of my chest while my heart skipped a beat before it started to pound hard and fast in my chest. "Are you saying that you might be having the baby today?" I asked and stood, and my mate stood as well. "Or are you just needing to make sure that everything is fine?"

"I don't know, Daniel," Mom said and shook her head. She cleared her throat and shifted in her wheelchair again, biting back a small groan of pain. "All I know is that I need to go to the pack doctor's and need to go now."
