Chapter 8
Grace's PoV
Both men stopped in their tracks, looking over at me with delight in their eyes. I waved the syringe in the air before placing it back in its holder on my belt.
"I just hope you've got the other ingredients. I don't know the cure off by heart but I heard you needed the blood of the vamp that turned them. That's why I ran off... I hope you don't mind." For the first time since I'd known them, Dean offered me a proper smile, a thankful one. He'd always seen me as the amateur but now I'd tried to help Sam, he was grateful and was starting to see me in a different light.
"Thanks Grace." Dean said quietly as he helped Sam into the car. "I owe you one." I handed him the needle and pulled him into an unsuspected hug. He stiffened at first, before hugging back.
"Don't mention it. It's all about saving people, right?" I whispered into his ear before we pulled apart. "So, what's next?" I glanced at Sam who was looking worse for wear in the passenger seat of the impala.
"I'm heading back to the bunker. Gonna get he ingredients together for the cure." He sighed, running his hands through his hair. I could see this was affecting him harder than he wanted to admit, that he was struggling not only to concentrate but to come to terms with the fact his brother was turning. I could hear Sam straining in the chair as his body changed in front of him.
"Hey, don't hate me for saying this but I think you're gonna need an extra pair of hands." I nodded over to Sam. "I've seen my fair share of new vamps and the lust and hunger for blood is unreal. You'll need someone to watch over him while you're getting the cure together, or vice versa."
"Look, Grace, I appreciate the concern but I've got this." Dean seemed snappy again, back to his old self as if I'd upset and angered him with what I said.
"Dean... I didn't mean anything by it. I'm not saying you're a bad hunter or a bad brother, I'm just saying you need help. If one drop of blood is consumed, the cure won't work." I said softly, trying not to upset him anymore but he shoved me, sending me back a few steps.
"You don't think I know that?" He barked, tending his body in my direction. "I've got one shot at this, I don't need some amateur getting in the way and ruining my chances." That word again. Amateur. I bit my lips together, holding back from aiming the barrage of abuse at Dean that I so desperately wanted to. He was having a tough time, I kept reminding myself, and your sharp tongue isn't going to help. I glanced over to the car, expecting to see Sam half conscious in the seat - but it was empty.
"Dean!" I shouted, his gaze quick to follow mine to his empty car.
"Sammy?" He shouted as the both of us looked around, scouring the area for him. "Dammit!" My heart began to pound in my chest as mine and Dean's eyes locked once more. We both had that same look in them. We needed to find him and fast. If he bit someone, that would be it - the cure wouldn't help at all.
"Split up. I'll take this side, you take that." I pointed before we both headed off, running as quick as our legs could take us. We didn't have time to come up with a clever plan or sort out how to track his phone, we just needed to listen out for any noise.
"Argh!" Someone shouted and I spun round, running down the alleyway I was sure it came from. Whipping out my phone, I text Dean the location and took off, listening out for any further noise. "Get off me!" I sprinted towards the sound, Sam coming into my vision as he towered over a small man in the alleyway ahead of me. His fangs were out and he was getting ready to bite the guy.
"No!" I shouted, grabbing both their attentions as I ran towards them, rugby tackling Sam away from the guy. "Run now!" I ordered and the guy took off without hesitation, not looking behind him as he sped out of sight. "Sam, you've gotta fight this!" I said as he stood up, his anger now fuelled as well as his thirst. I knew I was next on the menu. Please, Dean, hurry up.
"I- I can't... control..." he tried to speak, but the end was cut off as he growled and ran at me, knocking me to the floor. He grabbed me and threw me into the wall, sending me crashing into the bin bags below. He walked up to me, his fangs out and ready to bite as he leant over me.
"I'm sorry Sam..." I breathed out as I grabbed my final syringe, jabbing it into him and filling him with dead mans blood. A roar of pain echoed the alleyway just as Dean turned the corner, watching his brother fall to the ground, unconscious once again.
"Sammy?" He called as he ran towards him, glaring at me as soon as he saw the state of him. "What did you do?" I held up an empty syringe.
"I'm sorry Dean, I had to. He was about to bite me. It was dead mans blood." Dean roared out in anger as he punched the garbage bin beside me, the tinny sound echoing for the town to hear.
"I swear if you've damaged him in some way I'm going to come for your head." His eyes bore into mine with hatred.
"Don't worry, I'll make it easier for you. I'm coming to the bunker." I leant down beside Sam and pulled him up. "You gonna help or?" Dean swallowed his anger for a second as he helped me pick his brother up off the floor and load him into the impala. Without hesitation, I jumped into the passenger seat and waited for Dean who quickly started the impala and drove to the bunker, not saying another word to me.
