Chapter 23

Grace's PoV

The door smacked open and Dean, Sam and Cass ran into the room, all stopping dead as soon as they saw me and the shifter. I looked behind me and saw the shifter had now taken my form, a mess of skin and goo between us on the floor.

"Sam! Dean! I'm so glad you're okay!" The shifter smiled, acting me better than I ever could. My jaw dropped open as I glared at the shifter and towards the three men.

"Guys, that's not me. That's the shifter." I said, pointing to the shifter who mirrored my shocked look. Dean cocked his gun and aimed it at us, one and then the other.

"What are you waiting for? Kill it!" The shifter shouted, pointing at me furiously. I moved my hand to my back pocket, trying to pull the silver knife from my belt.

"Keep your hands where I can see them." Dean shouted, making me jump as I put my hands up in innocence. "You too." He said to the shifter, who followed suit. It was beyond weird to see a literal mirror image of me stood beside me and confusing everyone. If I told Dean what I was trying to do, it'd let the shifter know I was going to prove myself and the shifter would probably lash out, hurting or killing someone. I had to play this cool. I faked a sneeze, wiggling my nose before scrunching up my face. I used one hand to rub my nose as if it itched.

"Achoo!" I fake sneezed, bending over just enough to hide me grabbing my knife. I quickly turned to the shifter and lobbed my knife at it, the knife spinning in the air before landing in its chest, causing it to fall on the floor. "It's silver, bitch." I snapped as I watched it die, hands cupping the knife and the injury. After a second, I turned to the men and smiled. "I'm so glad you guys are okay!" I ran over to Sam and pulled him into a hug, which he retaliated quickly, and then hugged Dean, who seemed to stiffen where he stood.

"I'm glad you're okay too." Castiel smiled as he took a look around. "So what's going on?" Dean was quick to interrupt.

"Wait a minute. She's your source?" He said with his nose turned up. Sam rolled his eyes at his brother's rudeness.

"Yes." Castiel said bluntly.

"And you're trusting her?" Dean responded, disbelief filling his features.

"I don't see why not. She has helped us from the start, I have faith in her." Castiel said, giving Dean a look that questioned why he was so against this. To save any further arguments, I butted in with the facts.

"Kelly is here." I said matter-of-factly. "Demon signs have been happening more and more regularly and now they're daily, in places literally down the road from one another. I think demons are trying to pinpoint her location by asking locals. They've stolen artefacts from each place to make it look like a robbery but sulphur has been at every scene. I think they're going to buildings she has been in." I shrugged. Sam let out a smile.

"Well, it's a start." He said confidently. "Let's get set up and see where we can go from here." Dean shot him a glare before tutting.

"Am I the only sane one here?" He barked. "It's a couple of demon signs, it doesn't mean she's here and we'd be fools to waste our time on a whim."

"We've gone on cases with a lot less." Sam argued. "And, don't know if you've noticed Dean, but we are running out of time."

"Which is why we need to be following things that are certain." Dean snapped back once again.

"You know what? Fine. I'll do this by myself. If I find her, I'll let you know. Sorry for trying to help stop the end of the world, Dean, and for helping you guys find the shifter that got your ass. The one who pretended to be you to get information out of me." I snapped, fed up of always being undermined by him. I bet if anyone else had given him that information then he would have taken it with no questions asked, but there was something about me that he really didn't like. I huffed as I turned my back on them, storming out of the town hall and back towards my car. I got in and put the key in the ignition.

"Grace, wait!" Sam called out, causing me to hesitate. I waited for him to reach the window of the car. "Grace please. We need your help and-"

"No Sam, I'm trying to help. That's all I've been trying to do." I sighed, turning the key and starting the engine.

"Look, take my number. If you hear anything just let me know. Dean will warm to this, he's just guarded." He held out a business card for his FBI alias and tried to offer me a smile.

"Thanks." I said as I took the card. "But I don't think Dean will ever want to know me. Despite helping you before, he still hates me." I didn't wait for anything more to be said, with a heavy heart I pulled away, leaving Sam on the kerbside. In my rear view mirror I could see him slap his hands down in frustration before turning and going back into the building. It hurt me to do it but I needed to keep myself safe, not let me get caught up in emotions and feelings when the world was at stake. I felt my stomach pull as it growled hungrily. I pulled into the closest diner and slumped into a booth, ordering a plate of pancakes and some coffee. The diner was weirdly quiet, the only people I saw were the ones working here, which make me suspicious at the best of times and now, knowing Kelly was somewhere around, made me more nervous than normal. The waitress poured the coffee into my mug at the table before turning to someone out of my eyeshot.

"Ma'am, do you want any coffee?" She asked another lady.

"Do you have any decaffeinated?" A meek voice said but the waitress shook her head.

"Fraid not ma'am." She said as I quickly poked my head out of the booth to see a lone woman with shoulder length brown hair, one hand cupping her stomach as the other poked about her pancakes.
I grabbed my phone and the card Sam had left me, quickly typing to him to say I may have found her and the address of the diner.
Glancing up at the waitress, who was now in the kitchen with the chef, I took a good look at her and her evil smile and as she looked over to me, the black eyes were unmistakable.

Demons.
