Chapter 21

Grace's PoV

I paced around in my hotel room, my phone pressed to my ear with such force that my head was getting warm and my fingertips were white.

"Come on, come on, come on." I said as the ringing tone continued, my annoyance growing with every ring.

"Grace?" Castiel's voice finally sounded through my device, relaxing me slightly.

"Finally!" I snapped, my voice hushed in the hope that Dean, or whoever it was in the room beside mine, would not hear my phone call. "Why did you send Dean here?"

"Send Dean? What are you talking about?" The answer was exactly what I had been dreading. My gut and that awful feeling inside of it were right. I swallowed down the nervousness as I explained myself.

"Luling? I text you about the demonic signs and when I got to the antiques store Dean was there." I began.

"That's impossible, Sam and Dean are hunting a shapeshifter in-" his sentence cut off instantly and as I put my phone back in my pocket and turned around, Cass was sitting on the edge of my bed with a worried expression on his face.

"Cass?" I double checked, feeling dumb. He sighed as he ran a hand through his hair.

"They're hunting in Harwood, a shapeshifter. I spoke to Dean on the phone and told him I got a tip on Kelly, that I'd go to Luling after I finished something. He said okay." Castiel spoke lowly, also making sure no one else could hear what we were saying.

"So you're saying this Dean is a shapeshifter? Which means real Dean is in trouble?" Panic rose through my body, my stomach twisting uncomfortably as a bout of nausea hit.

"Well, shapeshifters either kill straight away or they keep them alive to download their thoughts. If he's pretending to work the case with you, I'm hoping Dean is alive." Castiel said with a saddened tone.

"Well what are we waiting for? Let's go to Harwood and find them!" I pressed, pushing past Castiel and heading to the door. His hand grabbed my shoulder quickly, spinning me round to face him.

"No." He said sharply.

"No?"

"If you run, he'll know you're onto him. You need to keep working the case with him and I'll help Sam and Dean." He said, his hands remaining on my shoulders as I noticeably tensed.

"Keep working the case? With a shifter?" I double checked, hoping Cass would realise that this was a stupid idea. Leaving me alone with this thing would leave me vulnerable and on edge. I'd forever be watching him to make sure he didn't kill me.

"Yes. It'll only be a short time. I can be there and back in four hours." I breathed out a breath I didn't know I was holding and relaxed. For some reason, despite all my better judgements, I was willing to go along with this for Castiel. He seemed sincere.

"Fine. I'll carry on like normal." I said, Cass letting out a sigh too.

"Thank you. Just be careful. This shifter just wants information, that's why he's targeted you. Try and throw him off our scent." I nodded in agreement before Cass disappeared, leaving me alone with my thoughts. Within a second, the door was knocked on.

"Grace? There's been another hit, come on." Deans voice shouted from the other side of the door. My stomach tightened again as I grabbed my bag and packed it, making sure my silver knife was tucked in my belt for safe keeping, and headed out.

"Where's the impala?" I questioned, noticing Deans beloved car was missing from view.

"Let Sammy borrow it. He was going after a shifter. Thought I could ride with you." I smiled and nodded as I unlocked my car.

"Sure thing!" I said, hoping I sounded as confident as I was trying to be. I needed him to believe that nothing was wrong. We got in the car and began the journey to the town hall where Dean informed me another Demon had struck; a staff member was dead and something was stolen just like before.

"So..." Dean began and my chest tightened in anxiety. We were stuck in the car together and he wanted information. There was no way I could get out of this now. "How did you know to look for demon activity to track down Kelly?" I glanced at Dean as we drove towards incoming traffic, the glare from the lorry's headlights illuminating the shifters glowing eyes.

"I didn't." I said honestly. "I'd gone through a few other ideas first but when none of them seemed to work, I tried that." My hands gripped the wheel tightly, sweat beginning to make my palms slippery.

"Fair enough." Dean said as he shrugged. "So what was the plan going to be if you found her?" Castiel said to throw them off the scent. He was downloading Deans thoughts so lying completely was out of the question but I could twist the truth enough to change the plan.

"Well, I said I'd contact Castiel if I heard anything that could've related to Kelly and he said he'd send one of you." I nodded towards Dean. "Then we'd find her and I'd try and talk to her, woman to woman, and give her my address as a safe house. I'd leave it to her to make the decision." I lied. The truth was I was going to tell Cass, convince her and then let the guys do whatever they wanted. My house was never going to be involved in it. Hopefully this is enough to assist them.

"Interesting theory." Dean nodded. "And you mean your place in Lockhart, yeah?" I nodded in response again.

"I got no other places." I said with a laugh, trying to make it seem friendly. He laughed along for a second before we both fell into silence. I could feel his eyes on me the entire time I drove, making the nerves in my stomach build with every second.

"You know," Dean began, "I was wrong. You're actually not half bad..."

That coming from a fake Dean shifter was never a good thing... Castiel, please hurry.
