Chapter 19
Grace's PoV
I smiled back to Sam, hugging my cup closer.
"Well, I like you too. Your brother needs some getting used to but you're good people. I can tell."
"Thank you. We try. Dean is just annoyed that the plans aren't as straight forward as we'd hoped. Sometimes, he just takes it out on people because that's easier than showing his true feelings and the fact he's upset." Footsteps suddenly approached the doorway and we both spun round to look, seeing Dean as he pulled a face at Sam saying he should keep his mouth shut. We were so engrossed in our conversation we hadn't even heard Dean come back.
"Yeah and you're fine aren't you, Jason Voorhees." He said, his underlying tone filled with venom. My jaw dropped at the rude remark he was so comfortable giving his brother.
"Wow." Sam said, shaking his head at his brother. "I never said I was... that was a low blow man."
"And uncalled for." I butted in, receiving a glance from Sam to tell me to stop. "You know, despite everything Dean, I have respect for you but you can't just butt into our conversation with stuff like that when you've no idea what we've been talking about for the last hour." Dean scoffed, folding his arms across his chest.
"Yeah? And I think you've overstayed your welcome. Sammy, don't let her turn you against me." Dean narrowed his eyes as he gestured between Sam and I. Sam let out a sorry laugh.
"Dean, you've been doing that fine by yourself." He let out a breath. "Grace is trying to help. She's listening to me without judging me. She's open with me about everything. You're pushing me away, you're rude and dismissive and you're trying to boss me around like some sort of trainee. Who's doing the damage?" Dean's face dropped as Sam stuck up for me over his brother, the words he said playing on Dean's mind. I could tell, I've had that look on my face many times before.
"Sam, can I talk to you?" Dean asked, his tone desperate not to show any emotion. "In private?" His eyes shot over to me in an instant so I nodded and stood up.
"I need to pack anyway. You guys have business to attend to." I smiled at Sam before heading past Dean, who muttered something as I got closer to him, before heading to the room. The sigil on the ceiling reminded me of the demon fight and the exorcisms. The guys must have removed the bodies of the people I exorcised whilst I was unconscious. For once, thinking of demons didn't bring me dread or the memories of Daniel. Maybe talking about it had really helped take the weight from my shoulders. I smiled to myself again, Sam was a breath of fresh air in my life. Someone I didn't even know I needed until I had him. I'd been open with him and he had been so happy to listen, offering support and encouragement to me when I needed it most. I knew deep down Dean had that in him too, but whatever plans they were trying to sort out, it wasn't going to plan. We'd all had cases like that - albeit not as dramatic and world ending - so I knew the pressure he must be feeling was probably more than he'd ever want to admit or be able to handle. Maybe I could actually offer my services? Maybe I could help them or offer a plan that hadn't thought of?
I turned on my heels and headed back into the main area of the bunker, the brothers loud voices echoing the halls. I was about to turn the corner when someone grabbed me and pulled me back.
"Honestly, it's not a good time right now." Castiel said, peering round the corner towards the brothers. "Let them argue it out first." I sighed heavily as I trudged back to my room with Castiel and began packing my stuff into my bag.
"Is it serious?" I finally broke the silence. I could still hear the loud voices but they were not clear enough to hear the words.
"I'm sorry, Grace, it's nothing personal. Dean and Sam have been on edge a lot recently and the weight of the world is upon them. I hope you can understand." He offered me a sympathetic smile as he flicked through a book that was on my bedside.
"I do understand, I think." I said, unsure of my own words. "But I do really want to help. I'm not saying it to impose or to break their brotherly bond. I'm a hunter, this is my life. If I can go out swinging and saving the world I want to do it. Maybe a woman will be what Kelly wants. No offence." I said, throwing a piece of clothing into my bag with force every time I finished a sentence. Cass sighed as he stood up, throwing the book towards my bag.
"I know, I have faith in you. But these guys don't trust people easily, especially Dean. He's seen too much and dealt with enough not to believe that people are truly there to help you without some gain for themselves." He shrugged.
"That's why I want to talk to them. If they don't want my help then I'll leave." The last word stuck in my throat as a feeling of sadness washed over me. This was the first time I'd worked a job with other people and I'd already gotten emotionally attached. This wasn't the plan. Bobby had always said to me that I needed to get in and out of the cases, do the job and leave and never get attached to people because, in our line of work, people died. If you had someone you cared about, the monsters used it against you. And boy, was he right. I let Daniel in, got close, formed a relationship and then BAM they took him from me. I nearly cost Sam his life and he nearly cost me mine.
On second thought, maybe it was best to leave them to it.
