Chapter 18
Grace's PoV
"Is proud." Sam corrected me with an awkward laugh. I looked over at him with confusion, didn't he literally just tell me she was dead? So did the demon. So why is he not using past tense?
"I'm sorry I dont-" I began.
"Yeah its a little confusing. She was brought back by God's sister." My jaw dropped as he spoke, those words flowing so easily out of his mouth despite the ridiculousness of what he was saying. God had a sister? Who for some reason or another brought their mum back from the dead?
"As a thank you for saving the world or?" I tried to continue as If this were a normal conversation. I was quickly learning that these men had much more fascinating stories than any other hunter I'd ever met. Whereas most would boast about their impressive kill stats for a variety of monsters, these guys were fighting lucifer, demons by the hundreds, helping God and his sister... these were things I'd only assume hunters would say once they'd downed a few bottles of whisky. Yet here Sam was, his face beaming as he spoke about his mum, telling me a story about just another day in the life of them. Sam let out a small laugh.
"Actually, it kind of was. Dean helped stop the end of the world, made her see what she really wanted and as a thank you she brought back something we wanted. Our mum."
"Wow." I breathed out, unable to form a response that seemed fitting. Sam rubbed the back of his head as he let out a nervous laugh.
"I know, it's a lot to take in. It's pretty wild." He added, understanding my baffled expression.
"That's one way to word it." I smiled. "You guys just have very exciting lives. I thought hunting was exciting enough! Here we are, dealing with monsters no normal person knows about and you're dealing with the monsters us hunters don't know about. It's weirdly poetic." The use of that word brought back the memories of the demon once more and how I'd killed Daniel. The look on his face when he was trying to kill me; the happiness, the hunger for blood, the thrill. It wasn't him but it made it no easier. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. Sam went to take a sip of his coffee but upon hearing my sigh, lowered it from his lips once again.
"Everything okay?" He checked. I nodded, running my hands over my face.
"Just the memories of the demon. I'm still trying to come to terms with what happened." I said melancholically. Every reminder of Daniel seemed to cut me a bit deeper and I knew that one day this would come to bite me. One day, the monster I was hunting would be able to sense that and use it against me. I just had to be ready. Sam watched me sorrowfully, noting my shoulders dropping as I thought about him again. I'd never told anyone about what happened and maybe this was why it was affecting me so much. I had someone right in front of me that would understand, for once, and may be able to help. "Did you ever have to hurt someone you loved?" I said suddenly, catching Sam off guard.
"I have. For many reasons, Grace. Monsters are horrible things, they use what you love against you." He said cautiously. "Why?" I sighed inwardly. Come on Grace, just get it off your chest. Help yourself out for once.
"The demon. He spoke about it being poetic that I killed you because I killed my best friend." Saying the words aloud actually hurt more. Tears began to fill my eyes as they stung, but I bit my lips together and tried to persevere. "Daniel and I grew up and he knew I hunted - he was the only one. A demon possessed him to get information from me, used him to trick me and I desperately tried to fight the urge to kill him. I tried to exorcise him but he attacked me before I could finish it. we fought and it was to the death, so I had to kill him." I stopped as I rubbed my eyes, desperate to voice the whole story without crying. I was a hunter, I killed every day, why did I cry so much over this? "I've never forgiven myself for it. If I'd have exorcised him he'd still be here. His family were so close to me and I drifted away from them. They assumed it was because I was mourning - which I was - but I couldn't bare to look them in the eye anymore." I lowered my head. "I know they're going to keep using it against me. What do I do?" I looked up hopefully, praying that this man had the answers to my life's problems. He had family, he'd lost family - surely he'd have something to say.
"It's difficult." He said firmly. "Any time you let yourself have relationships, friendships even, these monsters use it against you. The demon killed my mum and came back to take my girlfriend. I refused to have relationships after that because it hurt so much. I've lost Dean countless times and he's lost me. We lost our dad, Bobby, pretty much every hunter we worked with. At first it hurts like hell, but the more people you lose, the less it seems to affect you." With a question burning in my mind, I wasted no time in asking it without really thinking about what I was saying.
"So why did it affect you when the demon said about killing me?" Sam was quick to straighten in his chair and avoid all eye contact with me. He fumbled with his cup of coffee for a second as he tried to come up with an answer.
"A few reasons." He sighed. "Talking about your death being like my mum and Jess's deaths. They were so bad I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy." He ruffled his hair as he thought.
"And?" I pushed.
"Well, you're the first person I've connected with in a while. I don't tend to let my walls down for many people but you just seem so... honest. Like what you say is what you get, and I admire that. Dean and I have been stuck on the road with each other for practically our whole adult lives and it's hard to be truthful with each other all the time out of fear of upsetting the other. It's nice to have someone else to talk to."
