Chapter 1
I can remember it all clearly. It was like any other ordinary day. It's just that I didn't know that was the last time I would ever see my father. His face, his eyes, his hair, every little detail about him is still fresh in my memory.
Three weeks ago I lost the man I looked up to my whole life.
"C'mon Dad! Hurry up!" I half shouted.
"Okay I'm coming." He chuckled.
I was going to my friend's house for a sleepover. Dad had to go to work and Mom had gone out with her friends a few hours ago.
My dad was a pediatrician and my mom is a vet.
He started the car and we drove peacefully to Kat's house. I couldn't wait to see my friends! It was just going to be us girls for the night. Kat, Emma and I. We basically do everything together. Emma Santiago, Kat Simmons and I were friends for years, and we still are pretty close and I know I can count on them for anything.
Minutes later we finally arrived. I grabbed my backpack and got out of the car.
"Hey Jess!" Emma called out to me. I waved at her.
"Remember, behave yourself and call me if you need anything okay hun?" Dad turned and said to me.
"Okay I love you! Bye!" I waved, walking off towards the sky blue house.
"I'll see you tomorrow. Love you too Jessie." He said with a grin.
"Dad! I told you not to call me that anymore," I whined.
"I know, I just can't believe you're all grown up now."
"Will you just go already?" I said with a smile still on my face.
"Getting rid of your dad already aye?" We both laughed and I watched as he drove off.
I then went inside and put down my things and saw Kat. "Hey Kat," I said with a smile on my face. "Jess you're finally here!" She squealed as she ran and engulfed me in a hug.

I opened my tired eyes and sighed.
"Good morning," Emma yawned, stretching her arms out above her head.
"Hey morning Emz," I smiled at her.
"I'm gonna go pig out on some pancakes." She grinned.
"Wait, how did you know pancakes were for breakfast?" I asked.
"The nose knows."
I laughed and headed for the kitchen where surely Mrs. Simmons was making pancakes. The smell made my stomach growl.
Mrs. Simmons turned around to us, "Oh good morning girls. Take a seat pancakes will be done in a minute."
We nodded and sat down. She put a plate of pancakes in front of us and told us to help ourselves.
She didn't have to say it twice. We both started to devour the delicious pancakes.
"Poor Kat, what do you think will happen when she realizes we ate all the pancakes?" asked Emma giggling.
"I don't know guess we'll just have to wait and see."
Kat was definitely mad when she found out and she swore she'd 'raise the goat army to attack us' - or whatever that means. Oh well, it was definitely worth it. She had to eat Lucky Charms cereal but at least she got a prize.

Dad was supposed to pick me up now. Emma had already left because her mom came to pick her up. I was worried. My dad was never late to come pick me up.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was my mom.
"Hey mom."
"Hey. I'm coming to pick you up."
"What? Why?" I questioned a little worried.
"We'll talk when I get there." She said, then hung up.
Twenty minutes has passed as I waited impatiently for my mom. Why couldn't Dad pick me up? Is he being held back at work or something?
Just then, the doorbell rang.
I rushed to open the door. It was my mom.
"Mom!"
"Hey let's go."
"Wait I have to tell Kat I'm leaving."
"I already informed Mrs. Simmons," She said in a rushed tone, turning and walking towards the car.
I followed her outside and got into the car.
"Now can you tell me what's going on?"
"Just wait."
She started the car and we drove in silence.

We arrived fifteen minutes later at the Riverton Medical Hospital.
"Why are we here?" I asked.
"Follow me," She said and got out of the car.
I followed her into the hospital to the desk where an old lady was typing away at her computer.
"Name?" The lady behind the desk asked.
"Amelia Monroe. I'm here to see my husband, Zachary Monroe."
"What?" I asked shocked.
The lady just looked at me then continued typing.
"Mom why is dad here?" I asked worriedly.
She didn't say anything.
"Go to Room 53 in Aisle 7," She said to my mom.
"Thank you," Mom said, then walked off.
I followed her nervously. Why is Dad here? I have a bad feeling about this.
We finally arrived at Room 53 and Mom knocked and stepped in with me.
My eyes widened. There lies my father, stone faced with a cast on his left arm and right leg, and a bandage around his head.
I burst into tears at the sight of him.
"He got into an accident," She said softly.
Just then the doctor came in.
"Mrs. Monroe can I speak with you?"
"I'll leave you two alone." She said, then walked outside with the doctor.
I sat on the chair next to the bed.
"D-dad I know you can't hear me...but I'm sorry. Please wake up. Don't l-leave me." I sobbed.
Mom came into the room.
"We have to go now."
"W-why?" I stuttered.
"Jessica, please I'm sorry but the doctor thinks....he's not going make it. They say it looks like severe brain damage. It's only a matter of time." She said looking down sadly.
"No! You can't! I won't let you!" I screamed, "Mom please! Don't give up on him yet."
Doctors came in and started pulling me outside. I struggled but I couldn't fight them. I took one last look at my dad. "I love you," I whispered before the door shut in my face.
He has always told me that there were bad people in this world but we have to let the good ones outshine them. I miss you Dad. I promise to let the good shine in me, always.
