Chapter 9

"What do you mean there was no one in my apartment?!" Lindsey became highflying distressed, "Where is my girlfriend?!"

"There was just you on the floor when we found you...no one else was around, and we didn't see anyone on the way up"

"We have to find her!" Lindsey tried once more to get up

"Your not going anywhere, we need to get you in for a brain scan!" The doctor told him

"No I need to know where she is! She's pregnant!" He panicked

"We can get the police up here but there's not much we can do, I'm sorry," the nurse said genuinely

Lindsey was absolutely beside himself, why would she just dissappear? Was she safe, did Jimmy come back? He soon began hyperventilating

"Mr. Buckingham, you must calm down or we are going to give you something," The doctor told him

"No! I need to leave! She's not safe, you don't understand what happened!" He tried hard to get up

"We need a sedative," the doctor told one of the nurses who then rushed out to get it

"I don't need a sedative! I need my girlfriend!"

"Sir, the police are on their way, they are going to help you."

They quickly injected Lindsey with a sedative to keep him calm, within no time he was once again out cold

When Lindsey awoke he was laying in a hospital bed, his head bandaged.

Lindsey noticed a cop standing by his bed

"Mr Buckingham?"

"Did you find her?" He tried to sit up quickly

"So far we have not been able to locate her no" Lindsey didn't know whether to scream or cry

"Why would she have left? Was this a domestic disturbance between the two of you?" He felt bad for asking but it was his job to

"Of course not! I wouldn't hurt her-I love her! It was Jimmy, her ex! He-he-" Lindsey broke down in sobs

"I know this is hard, but I'm going to have to ask what happened" Lindsey didn't know if he would be able to get it out

"We were laying down in the bed room and there was a knock at the door-I went to answer it. The next thing I knew Jimmy was over powering me. Stevie came in and he went after her while I was trying to recover and get to her....he had her on the bed and I tackled him. He pushed me into the table and I hit my head. While I was out he-he raped Stevie," Lindsey cried

The cop wrote down everything Lindsey was telling him, he could tell it was extremely hard for him to talk about

"Do you know this for sure?"

"There was blood all over the bed sheets, I could tell that Stevie was in major shock when I woke up. What else could have happened?"

"That's why I'm asking sir! Well we've checked where Jimmy works and apparently he hasn't been in for a few days"

"Days?! Where is he?! He could have her! She's seven months pregnant!" Lindsey became distressed

"We are fully aware of that, but if we can't find either of them...one last question, is the baby Stephanie is carrying yours?"

"No...it's Jimmy's. He started to abuse her and she ran away and came to me. We both agreed that I would father the baby."

"The thing is, if he has Stevie, if he's threatened her to keep quiet, because the baby is his you have no right to fight it whatsoever" Lindsey was given a sympathetic glance

"That is bullshit!" Lindsey screamed at him

"Yes it is...but it's law, you are not married to Miss Nicks and the baby is not biologically yours, if she stays with him there's nothing we can do for your situation" Lindsey couldn't believe they weren't doing anything

"Get out." Lindsey said quietly

The cop bowed his head in acknowledgement before leaving the room

Lindsey was beside himself, if only he had tried to stay awake just that little bit longer. The thought of Stevie running away from him crossed his mind.

She was so mad at him before he passed out, she was right, he never touched her and he should have, there were multiple opportunities to and he made excuses each time. He was terrified at what had happened to her. She was freaking out before the ambulance, she barely wanted him to touch her! Her mental state was extremely fragile.

What if she had gone back to Jimmy because...well he couldn't bring himself to thing about that

"Stevie where are you?" Lindsey cried to himself, placing his head in his hands. He felt like dying.

Eventually he cried himself to sleep, dreaming of Stevie, she was holding a baby, Jimmy suddenly came into view and snatched the baby away and took Stevie into the shadows. Waking up with a jump his dream had frightened him greatly

"Stevie?" He looked around the room for her

She wasn't there...Lindsey realised he had to get out of there, he needed to go back to the apartment, maybe she had left a clue or something

He began to pull the IV out of his arm and detach the rest of the monitors, alerting the nurses on staff

"Mr Buckingham I'm going to need you to to get back into bed!"

"I'm discharging myself!"

"You aren't well enough yet."

"You can't make me stay here. Go get me those damn discharge papers then."

The nurses soon realised they weren't going to be able to stop him, so they brought the correct papers and he signed them fast before running out.

He took a taxi to his apartment and rushed up the stairs. Flinging the front door open he preyed that Stevie would be there, sitting on the couch waiting for him

The living room was empty, his prayer not being answered.

Walking into the bedroom he looked at where she was the last time he saw her, there was nothing left anywhere

"Steph...come home to me" he whispered

He knew he had to check sooner or later but he didn't want to, walking to the wardrobe he put his hand on the handle and closed his eyes preparing himself, eventually pulling the doors open

There she was, sitting with one of his shirts in her hands, inhaling his scent. Lindsey dropped to his knees and sobbed into his hands

"Hey, Linds," Stevie said casually.

"Hey Linds? Is that seriously all you can manage?!" He looked at her

"Please don't yell at me," she covered her ears with her hands

Lindsey flopped backwards onto the floor and placed his arms over his face

"Lindsey?" Stevie crawled towards him on her hands and knees

He didn't answer her, he couldn't right now, she crawled closer. "Lindsey," she whispered, tapping his shoulder

"What Stevie?" He didn't bother to look at her when he spoke, just carried on covering his face

"Where did you go?"

"Where did I go? I went to the hospital! Where the hell did you go?" He couldn't help but raise his voice

"Here," she grew nervous

"Do you understand what you put me through? I had to be sedated because I was in so much of a panic as to where you were"

"I didn't want to go," Stevie shook her head, rubbing her stomach

"I don't care if you didn't want to go or not! We needed to see if our child was safe!"

"She is!"

"You're still in shock, Stephanie! You aren't thinking!"

"Don't tell me what to do! Maybe if you'd tried harder to fight for me!" She was well and truly in shock

"You know that I would have killed him! I still want to kill him! Baby, you have to go to the doctor and I promise that I will not let them do anything you are not comfortable with," Lindsey tried to reach for her

"I said I'm fine, why won't you listen to me?" She dodged his grasp

Lindsey said nothing he walked over and placed his hands on her belly

"She's not reacting to me Steph, can you not feel that?"

"She's sleeping," Stevie turned away so he couldn't touch her belly, cradling her belly. "Give her some time," Stevie added

"Stephanie...we might not have time...and it doesn't matter whether she's sleeping or not she moves as soon as I touch her every time, she knows who daddy is!"

"You think she's dead?" Stevie asked him

"I don't know..." he told her truthfully

"She's sleeping!" Stevie blew up, "I know she is!"

"Stevie, there was blood on the sheets..."

"We have to go. I know you are scared that something is wrong, but we need to go to the hospital so that it can be fixed," he opened his arm for her

Stevie broke down where she stood, crying her eyes out and holding her belly tightly

"I can't..." she sobbed

"You have to, baby," Lindsey walked up to her and engulfed her into his arms

Stevie wrapped her arms around him tightly and cried

"You need to keep her safe Lindsey, I can't lose her, because then I'll lose you too..." she cried

"You'll never lose me," He kissed her forehead.

"Jimmy...he said..."

"What did he say baby?" Lindsey asked

"He...he said that you only wanted me for the baby, that's why you don't touch me...because your only with me for her..."

"That is the furthest thing from the truth," Lindsey told her, "I love you and I want to marry you."

"Lindsey?" She said after a while

"Yes baby?"

"Take me to the hospital?"

"Let's go," he gingerly picked her up bridal style and carried her down to his car, driving her to the hospital

Once they arrived and were seen to Stevie got into her gown and laid on the bed, clutching Lindsey's hand hard

"Remember, I won't let them do anything you aren't comfortable with," Lindsey rubbed his thumb over her knuckle

Stevie nodded and watched as a doctor came into the room and sat himself down on the chair

"Right, so why are we here today?" He asked Stevie

Stevie looked at Lindsey, "Can I see a female doctor?"

Lindsey looked at the doctor who had an understanding glance, telling her he would go and get one for her, he left the room

A short while later a female doctor walked in

"Hello, my lovely, I heard you requested me?"

"Yes," Stevie said quietly, not looking up from her lap.

"Would you mind telling me what happened?"

"I...I...I just want you to check that our baby is okay, nothing more" the doctor looked at Lindsey, who looked at Stevie

"Steph do you want me to tell her?" Lindsey rubbed them

"Nothing happened Lindsey..." she said, he could tell she was terrified

"Okay..." Lindsey nodded slowly

"Let's have a look at your baby, shall we?" The doctor said cheerfully

Stevie nodded, and got Lindsey to stand up so she could put her face in his chest

He stroked the back of her head, kissing the top of her head.

The doctor set up the ultrasound machine and turned it on, spreading the gel around on Stevie's stomach.

A heartbeat filled the room, but it was nowhere near as strong as the last time

Lindsey looked at the doctor who was looking very concerned at the monitor

"Have you been through any trauma?" The doctor asked, her cheerful tone suddenly gone

"No!" Stevie said quickly

"Steph!" Lindsey's tone was one of warning

"Is there something I should know about?" The doctor asked, "Your baby's life is in danger, I must know everything."

Lindsey decided not to let Stevie back out once more and told the doctor

"She was raped yesterday..."

"Has this been taken to the police?"

"Yes."

"I think that we should do a pelvic exam to examine the cervix."

"No...I don't want to..." Stevie started to cry and backed away on the bed

"Baby-baby, she needs to," Lindsey said softly

"But it hurts..." she grabbed for Lindsey, who held her tight

"I know it does, but it's for the baby-for our daughter," he kissed her forehead

Eventually Stevie agreed, and told Lindsey he had to stay with her, laying back down again he moved his chair closer to her so she could look at him and he could soothe her hair

As the doctor began her examination carefully, Lindsey repeatedly laid kisses across Stevie's face. "I love you."

Not even his words could settle her, she was still crying and her knuckles were white from where she was gripping onto him

"Steph, look at me," Lindsey tilted her chin up to look at him. She looked at him and it broke his heart to see the pain and shame in her eyes

"She'll be done soon," Lindsey kissed her forehead, her nose, then her lips. "It's for our baby girl."

Stevie nodded and held on for that last little bit, after what felt like hours the doctor instructed she was finished

"I don't know how to put this lightly...."The doctor winced, "you do have some tearing and that mean sex is completely out of the question for a few weeks. You have to keep calm and stay in bed rest, I am putting you on a strict diet to increase the baby's vitamin intake. If that doesn't work to increase its strength...we will have to preform a c-section."

Stevie was sitting there shocked, she had completely zoned out

"Is she looking more bad than good? Like survival wise?" Stevie asked

"Nothing is ever one hundred percent; it's really only up to your body and your baby's body," The doctor replied.

"I don't care about that right now, I want your gods honest option!" Stevie suddenly became a little fierce

"Nothing is for certain, no," the doctor shook her head

Lindsey let go of Stevie's hand and walked out of the room, her watching him leave

"Lindsey?! Lindsey!" Stevie jumped off of the table, chasing after him in her hospital gown. She looked on as he slide down against the wall, elbows on his knees as he grabbed at his curls

"Lindsey..." Stevie stood in front of him, "Lindsey, we need to go home."

"I'm going to kill him..."

"Lindsey, please, come back with me," She reached down to touch him

"Steph, go back in"

"Not until you come with me"

"I'm so angry right now that I'm scared!" He told her truthfully

"I'm not scared of you," she carefully kneeled down in front of him. "I need you to help me."

He cupped her cheek in his hand and kissed her

"No, but I'm scared of me!"

"Lindsey, please," Stevie began to sob

He didn't say anything else after that, just silently took her back into the room where she got changed. The doctor handed Stevie all the information she needed on the diet, and anything other bits she needed to know

Getting into Lindsey's car, he drove them home

"I want to take a bath," Stevie said quietly, walking to the bathroom

"Sit, I'll run it" Lindsey said simply, Stevie sat on the toilet seat watching him

"I'm sorry, I can't even carry a baby right!" Stevie got angry with herself

Lindsey's eyes shot to hers and his eyebrows burrowed

"What?" He asked

"I cheated on you, got pregnant, became homeless, left you again, got engaged to an abuser, got raped, and now I'm going to lose my baby!"

"Baby no...don't say that!" Walking over to her he crouched in front of her and took her face, she looked at him with tears streaming

"How do you even still love me..."

"None of this is your fault," Lindsey kissed her forehead, "We have to stay positive and hope that our little girl with thrive."

"It is my fault, if I haven't of strayed from you in the first place none of this would of happened! And you heard what the doctor said about her"

"Stevie, we have to focus on the future-her future," placing both of his hands on her belly

"She's not going to have one Lindsey! Why do you not understand that?"

"She is!"

"You heard what the doctor said!"

"I know, but we need to keep positive!"

" You didn't look to positive back in that hospital!" She batted back

Lindsey looked at the bath which was almost full, turning the taps off he checked the temperature

"Baths ready, call me when your done" he told her

"You're not going to take one with me?" Stevie was dumbfounded

"No, I just need a bit of space for a little while"

"Please don't leave me," Stevie walked up to him and wrapped her arms around his waist

"Please, just give me this, I'm trying to process this as much as you are"

Stevie kissed his chest and nodded, "Please don't go far."

"I won't sweetheart" kissing the top of her head he made sure that she made it into the bath safely before leaving the bathroom

Stevie laid back in the water, running her hands over her belly, "I love you, sweet girl."

"I hope daddy will be alright..." she continued to talk to her daughter for a while

Once the water started to go cold Stevie decided it was time to get out of the bath

"Linds?" She called

Lindsey poked his head through the door a mix of brandy and marijuana immediately hitting her like a ton of bricks

"Lindsey Buckingham!" She opened her eyes wide at him

"Yeeeaah?" He slurred

"I need help up, but try not to fall on me in the process," she spat

"God lighten up!" He walked over to her

"Lindsey I'm 7 months pregnant and you've pulled this shit?"

"Pulled what shit?" Lindsey asked walking up to the tub and trying to help her out

All Stevie did was keep slipping so she batted Lindsey's hands away

"Your drunk and you stink of pot! Your going to end up dropping me and hurting your daughter!" She said angrily

"Yeah, okay Stephanie," he said sarcastically, walking out of the bathroom

"How dare you speak to me like that!" She shouted after him and he turned round

"Are we really going to go there?" Lindsey asked

"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing," he slurred and walked into the living room

Stevie carefully got out of the bath and wrapped her robe around herself, going into the living room to find Lindsey taking another hit

"I repeat what the hell was that supposed to mean?" She asked with her arms crossed

Lindsey sighed and huffed, "Nothing." He repeated

"Stop nothing me god damn it! What did you mean!" She yelled

"Calm down!" He yelled, throwing his hands in the air

He went to take another puff of his joint when she walked up and slapped it from his hand

"Stop smoking that! Your going to hurt her!"

"Then stay in the bedroom," he shrugged, picking the blunt up and taking another hit

"I said STOP IT!"

"Stevie, chill out!" Lindsey stood quickly

"Don't tell me to chill out! Do you want to harm your daughter by smoking that shit?"

"I need it! I have to relax somehow!"

"You know what? Fine, why don't you just piss off to some bar? Go fuck a couple of women, I know it's been a while for you" Stevie said sarcastically

"Maybe I will," he got in her face

"Go then!" She said through her teeth and pushed him in the chest

He stumbled backwards, when he composed himself he grabbed his jacket and keys, abruptly walking out the door

Stevie stood there stunned, never ever expecting him to actually walk out on her. She prayed to God that he wouldn't actually cheat on her.

Sitting down on the couch she soon had to get up to open the balcony door, the air was thick with pot. She stood out there for a minuet and spotted Lindsey flagging down a cab

"Lindsey?!" She shouted down, he stopped for a second before getting in the cab and driving off

Suddenly fear struck her, what if Jimmy came while Lindsey was away. She hadn't been alone in a very long time....

Running to the front door she bolted it shut, drawing the curtains and crawling onto the couch, all she could do was wait. Her daughter hadn't moved in two days, making her feel more alone than ever.

Stevie fell asleep holding her belly, finally awaking when it was light out side, sitting up she saw the bolt was still on the door

Running and undoing it she flung the door open hoping Lindsey was outside it, but he wasn't and her heart fell

"Lindsey, damn you! Don't do this to me!" She cried to herself after she closed the door.

Deciding to take a shower, she freshened herself up

Finally a few hours later Lindsey came trudging through the front door smelling like a brewery.

"Lindsey, damn you! Don't do this to me!" She cried to herself after she closed the door.

Deciding to take a shower, she freshened herself up

Finally a few hours later Lindsey came trudging through the front door smelling like a brewery

"Jesus Christ," covering her nose, "go take a shower," pointing to the bathroom

He was silent as he walked through to the bathroom, emerging ten minutes later clean and smelling a little more fresh

Stevie was sitting on the couch eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich when he walked into the living room.

"How did she fuck?" Stevie asked bluntly.

"Like a fucking dream" he replied sharply

"So happy for you," Stevie threw up her middle finger in his direction

"Whatever, I'm going to go sleep" he told her and walked into the bedroom

"Bet you didn't get much last night."

"No your right I didn't, I don't think any woman has made me feel that good, ever" he closed the bedroom door

Stevie laid back on the couch, feeling the urge to scream, "I can't do this!" She yelled, standing up and pacing the living room

Stevie wanted to piss Lindsey off so she grabbed the hoover, turned it on and started hoovering the living room

"Can you shut up?!" He came barreling out of the bedroom a few minutes later

"No I'm cleaning!" She continued and knocked the hoover round his feet. He kicked the hoover out of her hands, "Let me sleep," he didn't leave any room for argument

Stevie switched the hoover off and jumped as Lindsey slammed the door,  as soon as it had closed she fell to the carpet in tears

"Lindsey! I'm leaving!" She yelled out, deciding that they both had enough

He didn't answer her so she figured he didn't care anymore, he had his new 'woman' anyway

Stevie slipped on her shoes, still in her robe from the night before and opened the door....she couldn't turn back once she did this

Taking once last breath she walked out and closed it behind her....

Stevie had no idea where to go, deciding on the alley that she talked to the lady in...maybe she would still be there

Walking down the alley way she was disappointed to see that there was no sign of anyone ever being down there, she realised the cops must have ushered them along to somewhere else long ago

"Fuck," she cursed under her breath. She was at a dead end.
