Chapter 4
Lindsey woke up first the next morning, looking at the clock he saw it was still early, Stevie was still sleeping and had somehow moved in the night so she was laying half on top of him, her head on his chest
He stared down at her tired face, smoothing her hair back and giving her forehead a light kiss.
She didn't deserve any of this, why did the worst things happen to the best people. Lindsey vowed that if he ever met Jimmy...he would smash his face in.
Stevie must have felt Lindsey tense because she woke up, looking up at him with questioning eyes
"What's wrong?" She asked becoming worried
"Nothing honey, it's not important"
"Are you sure?" Stevie raised her head
Lindsey nodded, "I would tell you if it was important."
Stevie seemed satisfied with his answer and laid her head back down. "Lindsey?" She asked quietly after a few minutes
"Yeah?"
"I hate to ask this, but I have never seen a doctor through any of this pregnancy. Will you take me? I'll pay you back- I mean if you have the money. I don't want you to struggle."
"What do you mean you've never seen a doctor? How do you know she's okay?" He was so puzzled
"I don't, I've just had to hope that's all..." Stevie dropped her head back onto his chest
"We will go today!"
"Thank you! As I said, I'll pay you back"
"No you won't it will be fine sweetheart!" He didn't want her money, not that she had any
"Let me go fine the telephone book. I'll find one and call right now," Lindsey stood and went into the living room.
Stevie climbed out of bed and went to use the bathroom, noticing that she had spotted on the sheets. "Lindsey?!" She called out for him
He didn't come fast enough so she called again
"Lindsey!" She shouted panicking
"Steph, what's wrong?" He came running into the bedroom again to find Stevie with tears in her eyes
"Stephanie, what honey?" He asked hoping for an answer this time
Stevie said nothing, she just pointed to the sheets
He quickly sat her down on the bed, "Stay here, I'm calling 911."
"Lindsey don't leave me," She grabbed his hand.
"I will be right back."
"No! Lindsey I'm scared...please don't go" she cried but he let go and ran into the living room
Stevie sat on the bed waiting for what felt like hours for Lindsey to get back from the phone, finally he came back in and ran over to her
"There's an ambulance on its way baby!" He didn't know what to do
"Are you in pain?" He asked frantically
Stevie shook her head, "Lindsey, she's all I have!"
"She'll be fine."
"How do you know? How can you be sure?" She searched his eyes
"I just know"
"You can't!" She shook her head sternly
"I hear the paramedics," Lindsey kissed her cheek.
He rushed to the door and let them in, showing them to the very distraught Stevie
Upon approaching Stevie, they asked a few questions, her not answering any, just staring into space
"There was blood on the sheets when she woke up this morning..." Lindsey showed them the the mark on the sheets
"Has she complained of any pain?" They asked Lindsey
"No. I asked and she said she wasn't any," he answered
They laid her back on the gurney and Lindsey took her hand
"Everything is going to be fine Steph!" He tried to reassure her, but she wouldn't answer anymore, she was just crying
Lindsey rode with Stevie in the ambulance, she still wouldn't speak, which worried Lindsey greatly
"Hey, I'll always be here," Lindsey kissed each of her knuckles on her hand.
"If I lose her...will you still be around? Will you send me back onto the street?" Stevie asked grabbing his hand in return
"What are you talking about sweet?" He asked confused
"You won't care what happens to me then," she said tearfully.
"I wouldn't dare," Lindsey bent down and kissed her forehead
"No I know! It's going to be just like before I know it!" Lindsey tried to calm her down by stroking her hair
"Steph don't talk like that...please!"
They arrived at the hospital and she was rushed to an examination room, Lindsey never leaving her side.
"Ms. Nicks, are you in any pain?"
Stevie nodded now, Lindsey looking at her strangely
"I didn't want to worry you!"
"Oh god" Lindsey ran his fingers through his hair
"We are going to do an ultrasound," the doctor said as a nurse wheeled in an ultrasound machine.
"Are you the father?" The doctor asked Lindsey, he didn't have to think twice
"I am yes!"
They had Stevie lift up her shirt and squeezed the jelly on her stomach. He pressed the transducer to her stomach and moved it around. "They're they are," he flipped the switch to hear the heartbeat.
"It's a little rapid, have you been under any stress lately?"
"Um a lot yes" Stevie said ears glued to the heartbeat
"Well you need to cut that out now, because next time you might not be so lucky, as harsh as that sounds"
"So she's definitely okay?" Lindsey checked
"Yes, she is," The doctor confirmed
"Thank God!" Stevie cried in relief
"You hear that? I told you!" Lindsey said excitedly, placing his hand on her belly!
"Thank you so much doctor!"
"Your very welcome, I will ask that you come back every couple of weeks just so we can check she's still doing well" he gave Stevie some tissue to wipe the gel off her stomach
"Of course, I'll make sure to be here!"
Stevie was told she could go straight home, so Lindsey called a cab and piled Stevie into it
"You are not leaving the bed when we get back," Lindsey told her sternly. "I am bringing you as much soup and sandwiches as you can eat."
"Thank you, Lindsey. I don't know what I would do without you."
"I'm hoping you never have to find out! God Stevie, you scared me today!"
"I scared myself!"
"I thought we were going to lose her" Lindsey breathed out in relief, Stevie looking at him
"Why did you say you were the father?" She asked after a minuet
"I guess I was scared that they would make me leave if I said no," Lindsey said
"Is that the only reason?" Stevie asked
"Yeah why?" He wouldn't look at her
"No reason," she shrugged casually, she couldn't expect too much could she? He was doing more than enough all ready.
Once they got to the apartment building, Lindsey picked her up bridal style and carried her all the way up the stairs to his apartment. "Can you get the door?" He asked her
Leaning over a little she unlocked the door, pushing it open and Lindsey kicking it the rest of the way
"Right bed!" He said walking to the bedroom
"It's morning now Linds!" She giggled, but he placed her back in bed anyway
"I'm bringing you food, do not dare leave this bed," he said sternly
"No problem," Stevie smiled, loving the feeling of being taken care of.
Lindsey returned the smile and left her in the bedroom to go make food.
Potting round the kitchen he felt very domesticated, fixing her more sandwiches like earlier, he made a mental note to go to the store
After placing the sandwiches on a plate he walked back into the bedroom to a half asleep Stevie
"Come on, eat before sleep again honey!" He placed the plate on the side
"Why do I always seem to fall asleep before a meal?" She chuckled, moving the plate to her lap. "Thank you, Lindsey."
"You know it's no problem." He sat beside her on the bed. "I think that we should discuss the future," gesturing toward her bump
"How so?" She asked taking a bite from her sandwich
"You're going to stay here, right?" Lindsey asked
"If that's okay with you? I don't want to jump into a relationship or anything, I just need to focus on getting my daughter and myself healthy."
"Of course you can stay here, I've told you, I'm going to take care of you."
"What are we going to do about sleeping arrangements? You can't sleep on the couch every night" Stevie said seriously
"Well we can try and find a place with two bedrooms if you'd like?" He suggested
"I wouldn't want to cause all that trouble," Stevie told him
"Well what about when the baby gets here, she'll need her own space."
"I could try to find a job and get my own place?"
"No...I kind of wanted you here with me..." He sounded a little vulnerable
"Seriously Linds, your not going to want to look after my daughter as well, you already made that clear before, its not what you wanted to do" Stevie told him truthfully
"I can always go and beg for my job back at the dinner" she added after
"Steph, you aren't going anywhere. I'm going to take care of you....both of you."
"But you always said you couldn't look after another man's baby...as much as I want you to look after us, I need to know she's loved by the both of us, and I don't know if that's possible for you..."
"There's a part of me that does love her. I know that when she's born....she'll have more love than she will know what to do with." Lindsey kissed her forehead
"Oh Lindsey!" She cried hard, crawling over to Lindsey and onto his lap, wrapping her arms around him
"I wish she was yours...but thank you so much for what you just said!" Crying into his neck
"I wish she was mine too," Lindsey stroked the back of her head. "We are going to make this work."
"Thank you Lindsey," she laid light kisses across his face
"Your so welcome!" He told her, he was pretty tired himself now so he snuggled down and suggested they get some more sleep, it was easy now they both knew Stevie's daughter was okay.
