Chapter 2

Lindsey exited the coffee shop, black coffee in one hand a donut in the other. He was heading back to his apartment going over the guitar part of one of his songs in his head.

Closing his eyes and trying to mentally fix a riff he took a sip of his coffee, turning the corner and running straight into someone, coffee spilling between the pair and the donut ending up on the floor

"Shit!" He looked down at his front then to the other persons clothes

"I'm so sorry, I..." he was stunned by the person he had just run into

"Stephanie..."

"Lindsey," she gasped, both of them staring shocked into each other's eyes. "I'm sorry-I should be more careful," Stevie began to apologize, bending down to pick up the fallen donut and coffee.

"No let me..." Lindsey straightened Stevie up and bent down himself

"It was my fault entirely Steph, I'm sorry...did I burn you?" He asked worried

"Only a little bit, I'm alright" Stevie pulled the top of her dress away from her skin to stop the heat burning her anymore

Lindsey took in her appearance, he didn't want to be rude...but she looked terrible. "H-how are you?" He awkwardly scratched the back of his head. "I've been better," Stevie looked down at her feet, the tension between them could be cut with a knife.

"How's the umm...the pregnancy going" he felt like he had to ask, she was clearly still pregnant

"Ups and downs" she shrugged "How are you?" She asked moving on

"Yeah good, I'm releasing some new tracks soon" he looked excited whilst Stevie looked disappointed

"I'm happy for you," she smiled sweetly.

"So uh, it's pretty chilly outside and I think most of the coffee ended up on you, so how bout I let you use my jacket and I'll walk you home?" Lindsey suggested

"Umm...no...you don't have to do that I'll be alright..." she said, he noticed her a little panicked

"No seriously, it's the least I can do!" Taking his jacket off and placing it round her shoulders

"No, Lindsey. It's really okay," Stevie tried to give his jacket back to him.

"Steph come on, do you still live at the old place? It's no trouble" he placed the jacket back round her

"Umm...Yeah.. " she could just leave him at the entrance to the apartment right? He wouldn't have to actually go up...

Stevie pulled the jacket tighter around her as a breeze blew. As they walked Stevie kept stealing glances at him, "How is everything in your neck of the woods?" She asked casually.

"Pretty good actually, my music career is actually going somewhere now" he looked at her again, and she looked away quickly

"I'm happy for you," Stevie took his hand and squeezed it.

"Thank you," Lindsey said softly, "Well, here we are," he gestured toward the stairs of the building

Stevie removed the jacket from herself and handed it back to Lindsey

"Thank you, you kept her warm" Stevie rubbed her bump for a second

"Your having a girl?"

"I think so yes"

"Well congratulations!" Lindsey tried a convincing smile

"Thank you. Umm it was nice to have seen you again"

"Want me to walk you up?" He asked kindly, she didn't look to great

"No! I mean, I'll be fine thanks"

"You look pretty beat, I wouldn't want anything to happen to you," Lindsey told her, "I don't mind."

"Honestly Linds, please go...this hurts..." she looked down, tears clouding her eyes

"What hurts, Steph? You have a baby, you should be happy," Lindsey held her hands in his.

"I fucked up, Linds," she looked away

"I know, but you can still be happy, you still have her" he pointed to her stomach

"But I lost you! I loved you more than life, and I fucked everything up and you left me!" She said tearfully

"I'm sorry I just couldn't deal with it"

"And I could?" Her voice cracked

"I was ready to get rid of this baby for you!" Stevie added

"Stevie, you wouldn't be able to live with yourself if you did that," Lindsey sighed

"Maybe not...but I'd be living with you! We could of had our own baby in time, gotten married, moved into a bigger place" Stevie smiled a little

"That is just a dream Steph...what happened, happened, it's done...over" Lindsey brushed her cheek with the back of his fingers

"Goodbye Lindsey," Stevie pulled away from him and turned away.

Lindsey watched as Stevie walked in and up the stairs, sighing he turned to walk away, taking one final glance at the apartment building and going on his way once more

He stopped and leaned against the building, the whole conversation between them weighing down on him. He caught something out of the corner of his eye. "Stevie?" He called out, causing her to stop dead in her tracks.

"Lindsey, what are you still doing here?" She tried to act casual.

"What are you doing back out?" He shot back at her

"I forgot something that I needed."

"You didn't change out of your dress? You're still covered in coffee." Lindsey gestured towards her clothes.

"Yeah...I just needed to grab something real important that couldn't wait" Stevie knew she was screwed

"What? I'll come with you, I don't like you wandering around in the state your in by yourself"

"I'm fine, Lindsey," Stevie said, "I can do it."

"Okay" he threw his hands up in defeat

"I'll be fine, I'll see you around maybe" Stevie said and walked off, disappearing around the corner

"Hmm" Lindsey waited to check if she was gone before entering the apartment building he used to live in

Walking up the stairs and standing in front of the door that he walked out of for good four and a half months ago, he knocked

A middle aged woman opened the door, barely clothed, "May I help you?"

"Uh, does Stephanie live here?" He scratched his head

"Who?" The woman was obviously confused

"Stephanie, we used to live here together about four and a bit months ago, I thought she still lived here..."

"No sorry dear, I've lived here for four months now, as far as I know the last tenant was evicted"

"Evicted?" Lindsey said shocked, to which the lady nodded

"Hmm, I'm sorry" she said

"It's fine, thank you, and sorry to disturb you!" Lindsey walked back down stairs and stood breathing fast

He had to find her and demand answers. He discovered one of her secrets, how many more were there?

Lindsey ran outside and looked around, not seeing any sight of her.

"Come on, think. Which direction did she go?" He asked himself.

After a minuet he remembered she had gone left at the corner, so he took the same route

Walking for about twenty minuets he found himself back in amongst people, back where the hustle and bustle of the stores were

He was just about to give up when he saw a sight that broke his heart...Stevie was sitting in the doorway to an empty store, a tub in front of her, quite clearly begging for change

"Stephanie?" He asked softly, kneeling down in front of her.

She looked up at him and immediately broke down into sobs.

"Steph...how long?" He pulled her into his arms and held her tightly against him.

"A few months," Stevie mumbled into his shoulder

"Oh baby" he rocked her and repeatedly kissed her head

"How?" He asked

"Jimmy ratted on me at the diner about our thing, so I got fired, and I couldn't afford the rent so they evicted me" she said shamefully

"Why didn't you come and find me? I wouldn't have let you live on the streets. It's dangerous out here!" He gave her a comforting squeeze.

"You hated me," she sniffled

"I am never going to hate you!"

"You wouldn't take me as long as I still had her inside me, so what was the point?"

"Steph...you do realise they will take her away because your homeless?" He said sadly and she cried even more

"I know" she completely broke down in his arms now

"I can't keep her, Linds! What kind of life could I give her?!" She cradled her stomach with both hands

"You're just going to give up on her? You aren't going to fight for your baby?" Lindsey asked sternly. "If this was my baby I would walk through hell barefoot for the both of you!"

"Well as you've told me a thousand times, this isn't your baby, so what do you care?" She tried to push him away but he still managed to hold her

"She deserves a mother way better than I could ever be, let's face it, I'm one big fuck up" she added and furiously wiped her tears with her hands

"You are not! Stephanie, you made a mistake. You got a little girl out of it, thats not a fuck up. You have to try for her." Lindsey placed his hand over her belly

"I can't!" She cried "I'm scared, I can't do this by myself, I have no money, no house...I'm no good for her!" Even with her words she still placed a hand on top of Lindsey's

"Come on, let's go," Lindsey stood up and held his hand out for her.

"Go where?" She took his hand as he helped her up.

"We are going to my apartment and we are going to get you taken care of," Lindsey once again took his jacket off and draped it around her shoulders.

"No I can't!" She tried to stay still

"Why not?"

"Because I won't want to leave you again!" She looked into his eyes with her scared ones

"Come on..." he led her away with an arm draped around her back to his place. He would get here fixed up again!
