Chapter Five

-Chapter Five-

"I'm on my way to school now. Talk to you later, Alex. Smiley face," I mumbled under my breath as my eyes scanned over Jake's message that I had just received seconds ago.

"Okay :) And I'm in the middle of Calculus. Talk to--"

The next thing I know, my phone was being snatched out of my hand and was being replaced with a detention slip.

"This," Mr. Bradford started. "Is for not paying attention in my class." Mr. Bradford was a slim and tall man. He had a little amount of hair, and bushy eyebrows that were placed unevenly above his grey, hatred filled eyes.

"You'll be seeing me after school, young lady," the teacher that everyone hates replied, smiling evilly at me.

I rolled my eyes. "Okay, I'll be looking foward to it, Bradford!" I smiled widely at the almost bald man. It's just two hours right? No harm done.

But, honestly I don't even see why I have to get a detention. The bell is going to ring in less than thirty seconds!

When the bell did ring, I gathered my books and walked out of the room calmly. Mr. Bradford has probably given a detention to all of his students. Except for the smart ones that he treasures, of course.

Suck ups.

* * *

Once detention was over (and I had my phone back), I texted Jake almost immediately. Why? I don't know.

Throughout detention I was aching to text him. My phone vibrated a couple of times on Mr. Bradford's desk, but he got irritated and turned it off. . . That is, once he figured out how to turn off an iPhone.

After checking my phone, I learned that the three messages I got during detention were all from Jake.

Message One:

"Hey Alex >=D"

Message Two:

"Did you die?? :o"

Message Three:

"Don't make me fly to Florida just to check on you. Text me back or else I'm going to assume that you're dead :("

I smiled down at my phone and texted him back.

"No, Jake. I am not dead!"

"Oh, thank goodness :) Why didn't you reply then?" he asked.

"Because I was in detention >=("

"Why were you in detention? Were you being a bad girl? Alex, what did I tell you about that!?"

"You got me in detention."

"GASP! Were you texting me during class again?" he questioned.

How'd he guess that? Well, I guess it's probably the only explanation... "You guessed correctly. And why are you texting me? Aren't you still in school?"

"Yeah, but there's only forty-five minutes left. And you texted me first."

"To reassure you that I wasn't dead." I told him.

"Oh yeah :P Well I'll text you when I get out of school then."

I frowned at the screen of my phone. I wanted to talk to him though! Oh well. Reluctantly, I sent him another message.

"Okay :( Talk to you later."

"Bye ;)"

There he goes with the wink again! This time it made me smile. Jake always cheered me up. Although I still don't know if he's as young as I think he is. Or even younger than I think he is. Like fourteen.

Weird...

I'll ask him later. Hopefully he's at least near my age. Which is seventeen, for your information.

Waiting for Jake to get out of school was awful! I mean, it was only forty-five minutes, but still! My mind wasn't working correctly, and my thoughts always wandered back to Jake.

Tthe numbers on my digital clock finally flickered to five fifty, when Jake gets out of school. But, it was two fifty in California.

Debating whether to text him first or let him text me first, I picked the latter. Don't wanna sound desperate....

Five minutes later, he texted me.

"Hey, Alex :) I just got out of school."

After my eyes scanned over the message, I replied. "I know lol."

Crap, that sounds a bit stalker-ish.

"That's not weird xD So does that mean you've been waiting for me to get out?"

"Err... If I said yes would you be creeped out?"

"Yes. Definitely."

"Then no. :) So what's up, buttercup?"

"The sky, duh."

"Fine then. Go all ten year-old on me."

"Ha, no thank you."

A question that I had been dying to ask Jake crossed my mind. "Speaking of age... How old are you?"

"I'm a fifty-four year old guy who lives in the back of an ice cream truck *hands you ice cream* Is that a bad thing?" he asked.

"Uh... *takes ice cream cautiously* Be serious, how old are you?"

Please don't be an old creep.... Please don't be an old-- My phone buzzed again and I looked down at it.

"Since you're dying to know, I'm 18. How old are you? Please say you're not some thirteen year old girl who has been obsessively fangirling over me this past week and a half...."

".....Is being thirteen a bad thing?" I asked. No, I am not thirteen. I've said my age before. Seventeen.

"Are you kidding? Or are you serious? Because if you really are, then I take back my other comment :)"

"No, don't freak, Jake. I'm seventeen."

"So you're only one year younger than me? Cool :D"

"Actually, my birthday is in a couple of months. I'll be turning eighteen soon."

"That's nice to know :)"

For an eighteen year old, this guy does do a lot of smiley faces. Well everyone has their inner child, I guess.

"It's also nice to know that you don't live in an ice cream truck."

For some reason I still think that Jake isn't eighteen. I have no idea why. He seems 'mature' enough.... If you don't count his childish personality, as in the amount of smiley faces he uses during our conversations.

Jake and I are still talking, but we can't seem to finish our homework. I only have gotten five problems done. Jake on the other hand... He has two problems done.

The worst part of this situation is that it's eleven thirty-seven PM. Well, at least here it is. In California it's only eight thirty-seven.

I know, we're distracting each other like crazy, but I want to talk to him. Even if I do fail calculus.

"You know, I still think you're an old man." I sent to Jake.

"I'm not an old person, Alex *rolls eyes dramatically*"

I highly doubt that he is, in fact an old man, but there's this little part of me...

"Prove it."

He didn't text back after that. Well, not until my phone started blasting out my ring-tone -- Party Rock Anthem -- two minutes later.

My mouth dried when I saw the caller ID.

It was a number from California, and you can probably guess who it was.

Jake Carter.
