31. Fight

"You want a ride home, I'm assuming?" Tyler asked Josh as he was walking out of his last period class. His hangover from that morning finally went away and he was in a much better mood.

"Mhm," Josh mumbled. "We don't have to get Patrick, Ashley's watching him."

"Good, my mom said she'd pick Madison up today," Tyler lied. He just refused to do it. "Do you wanna go straight home?"

"Not really," Josh sighed as they were walking towards Tyler's car.

"Great," the brunette grinned mischievously.

---

Surprisingly, Josh did not object to Tyler's idea.

They were sitting in the back of Tyler's car while parked in a deserted lot that belonged to an abandoned mall on the other side of town. Tyler had gotten the blankets out of his trunk and decided to put The Office on using Netflix on his phone.

"This show is so funny," Josh smiled contently.

"I've seen it like three times," Tyler laughed. "It never gets old."

He noticed Josh starting to doze off and he decided to let him, making a mental note to wake him up by four thirty. They still had a good forty-five minutes.

Their show was interrupted when Tyler saw he had an incoming call from Brendon. Josh groaned in annoyance. Laughing, Tyler accepted the call and put it up to his ear. "What's up, forehead?"

"Can you ask your boyfriend why the fuck he didn't give me my weed after school?" Brendon asked, annoyed.

"What?"

"I waited for half an hour and he never showed."

"He's with me..." Brendon talked some more. "Alright, I'll ask," Tyler sighed, pulling the phone away from his mouth. "Brendon wants to know why you didn't give him his weed after school."

"Oh no," Josh's eyes widened. "Oh no," he repeated.

"Josh?" Tyler began to worry. "What's wrong?"

Josh didn't answer and instead he closed his eyes and tried to take deep breaths, but they came out shaky and uneven.

"Brendon, I gotta go," Tyler hung up and set his phone down. "Josh, breathe."

"I can't," Josh said shakily.

"It's gonna be okay," Tyler tried.

"No it's not," Josh shook, still breathing unevenly. "It hasn't been my whole life and it isn't now."

"Josh–"

"Can you just take me home?" he asked, anxiety radiating off of him.

"Yeah..." Tyler sighed sadly. "I can," he got out of the car and walked the few steps it took to get to the front seat, Josh doing the same.

Silently, Tyler started his car and pulled out of the parking lot, beginning their journey home. About five minutes in, he saw the sky darken and rain started pouring out of nowhere. Irritated, Tyler turned on his wipers and kept driving. As he continued towards Josh's house, the rain continued as well, getting heavier and heavier.

"Tyler?" Josh asked, picking up something out of the cup holder. "What's this?"

Tyler momentarily took his eyes off of the road to quickly glance at Josh's fingers. Oh no. "Uh..."

"Is this seriously a joint?"

"Josh–"

"Unbelievable," Josh scoffed. "And to think I thought you could actually do it."

"Excuse me?" Tyler asked.

"You said you were gonna quit and obviously you didn't."

"Look, Josh—"

"I can't believe I thought you actually wanted to get better–"

"My mom started dating again and it fucking hurts, okay?" Tyler yelled.

Josh instantly looked guilty. "I'm sorry I didn't–"

"Because it's all about you!" Tyler continued yelling. "I try so hard to keep my problems hidden and I always help you with yours! When is it my turn?"

Tyler saw Josh was about to reply when there was a giant thud and the car jerked forward. It was completely quiet in the car, the only noise was the rain. In between the swipes of the wipers Tyler noticed that they had hit a stop sign. It was still intact thankfully, but the car was for sure going to have a dent.

"Josh are you okay?"

Instead of responding, Josh grabbed his bag off of the car floor and opened the passenger door. He got out and started walking off. Tyler quickly got out as well. "Josh? Where are you going?" he hollered through the rain.

"Home!" Josh called back.

"It'll take you forever to get there, let me give you a ride home!" No response. "Josh! It's pouring, c'mon! You're gonna get sick!" There was still no reply so Tyler started jogging towards him, grasping his wrist and stopping him. "Josh–"

"I can't walk at graduation!" Josh spun around. Tyler noticed the tears running down his face, mixing with the rain. "I'm sorry I'm making this about me again, but I need to tell someone!"

"What?" he asked, confused.

"I couldn't deal Brendon the weed because Mr. Way found it and took me to Mr. Iero," Josh sobbed. "I can't walk at graduation. He said the only way he would was if I had an understandable reason."

"You do though," Tyler said.

"I can't do that. I can't loose Patrick," he sobbed again, shaking his head.

"Josh," Tyler sighed. "It's hurting you more trying to stick with him than it would be to let him go. It's hurting him too."

"Tyler I can't."

"You have to," Tyler told him. "Y'know I wouldn't tell you this unless you needed to hear it."

Josh was silent for a minute before responding. "I can't."

"You can. I'll be there with you every step of the way."

"Promise?"

"Promise," Tyler nodded.

Josh deeply inhaled before nodding as well. "Okay."

"Thank you," Tyler breathed out, pulling him into a hug.

They stood there for what seemed like hours, just hugging in the rain.

"I'm sorry about your mom dating again," Josh mumbled into his chest. "I should have tried harder to know what was wrong. I'm sorry you feel you can't talk about your problems. I never want you to feel less important than me. I'm here to listen no matter how dumb your problem may seem."

"I'm sorry about Mr. Way finding the weed," Tyler mumbled back. "And it's okay. I'm sorry for acting like a dick to you when you tried to talk to me this morning. I was hungover— which was stupid enough on its own —and I took it out on you."

"I love you," Josh said. Tyler pulled back and looked at him with wide eyes. "What? Oh no," he started panicking.

"You love me?" Tyler asked.

"Uh... no?"

"Oh my God, you love me," Tyler grinned, pulling him back into a hug. "I love you too."

"You do?" Tyler could just hear the happiness radiating off of Josh's voice.

"So much," Tyler squeezed him slightly. "You're my best friend."

"Sorry pal," Josh pulled back. "That place still belongs to Patrick."

Tyler laughed, passionately grabbing Josh for a kiss. When they moved apart, they rested their foreheads together. "I can't believe we just got into our first fight."

"I can believe we worked it out, though," Josh gave a small smile.

"Josh?" Tyler asked.

"Hmm?" he hummed.

"Will you be my boyfriend?"

"Of course."
