15. Skipping

"Josh," Tyler approached the mentioned boy who was with Dallon at Josh's locker. "Pal, buddy, chum, history partner. I need your help finalizing this paper, will you come to the library with me?"

"Y-yeah, sure," Josh complied quietly, waving goodbye to a confused Dallon and following the other brunette.

The two walked towards the library but when Josh began to turn, Tyler grabbed his arm and steered him away from it. "We're not going to the library," he informed simply.

"Wait, where are we going then?" Josh asked, worry in his voice. "Class starts in five minutes and I don't wanna be late, because when you walk in late everyone stares at you and-"

"Lemme guess," Tyler interrupted his rambling, walking through the side doors of the school. "You don't like being the center of attention?"

"No, not really," Josh replied meekly.

"Well," Tyler led the other towards the back of the school. "You're not gonna be late."

"We can get back to the other side of school in five minutes?"

"No. You're just not going to class at all."

"What?"

"I said," Tyler walked over to the bleachers on the football field and slipped through the bars, approaching the two people sitting on crates underneath them. "You're not going to class. You're gonna hang out with Hayley, Brendon, and I."

"Um," Tyler watched Josh swallow nervously. Brendon smirked and Hayley stifle a laugh. "I have this test in Calculus though and I really can't miss-"

"Oh well," Tyler shrugged and patted the spot next to him on the crate. "Pop a squat."

"Okay," Josh obliged with a slight sigh.

"So..." Brendon began, looking at Josh with bloodshot eyes. Tyler could tell he was the highest one here. "How're you doing, Dun?"

"Oh, I'm alright," Josh dismissed. "You?"

"How do I look?" he humorlessly laughed. "Never mind, don't answer that," he quickly added, looking down at his lap and taking a drag from the joint that Hayley probably gave him.

It was quiet for a moment until Tyler broke the silence by digging in his jacket pocket, grabbing out his pack of cigarettes. He noticed Josh staring at him and he offered him one, to which Josh declined by shaking his head.

"Is this what you guys do? When you're not in class?"

"Sometimes," Hayley replied, grabbing the water bottle that was next to her and taking a sip from it, leaving the rim slightly pink from her lipstick. "Other times we're at Ryan's–"

"Were," Brendon cut in sadly. "Were at Ryan's."

"–were at Ryan's, sometimes we go to places around town, sometimes Tyler's in the janitor's closet with a girl fucki–"

"Okay," Josh interrupted, scrunching his face in disgust. "I get it."

Hayley laughed a little and then it went silent again. She passed the joint back and forth with Brendon a couple times and Tyler stuck to his cigarette. A couple seconds later, Josh started coughing and waving his hand in front of his face, trying to get rid of the smoke that was clouding his face.

"Do you need a drink?" Tyler asked Josh, offering him the water bottle Hayley was drinking from with a slight smile.

Josh gratefully nodded and twisted the cap off, putting it to his lips and sipping. Almost instantly after the contact, he spit it out all over the ground while the other three erupted into laughter.  "What is this?" He gasped in between spits.

"Vodka," Tyler snickered.

"Okay," Josh stood up and threw the plastic bottle at Tyler, which he caught. "I'm done," he started walking back towards the school.

"Wait, Joshie!" Tyler called in between chuckles. "We were just having a little bit of fun!"

"I'm sure you were!" Josh called back sarcastically. The three watched him disappear into the school before laughing once again.

"He's not that bad," Brendon said once they all calmed down. "Something about him still puzzles me though," he continued as he took the final drag from the joint and stubbed it on the side of the crate.

"Hmm?" Hayley asked.

"Why a kid like him sells weed? He's nervous, shy, and quiet. But not like, he's up to something quiet, he's just a quiet kid," Brendon shrugged, picking at the loose threads on the hole in his jeans.

"Joshua Dun sure is a mystery," Tyler said simply.

As Tyler was walking out of school, he noticed Josh walking across the cross walk. He was about to call the other brunette over but someone interrupted him.

"Tyler!" a voice called with a giggle following after it.

He turned around and saw Jenna walking towards him– actually being dragged towards him by a very peppy Debby. Tyler knew they had another friend, but she wasn't anywhere to be seen. They approached him and Debby smiled while Jenna blushed. He definitely knows which one called his name.

"Hi," Tyler greeted them with a distracted smile, trying to keep and eye on Josh.

"Hey," Debby replied while waving a little. Jenna just smiled.

"As much as I would love to stay and talk, and do other things," Tyler told them with a slight smirk. "I have to go catch up with a friend for a project."

"Oh, which friend?" The redhead asked.

"Uh," he glanced over at Josh who was about to turn the corner. "Josh Dun."

"Josh?" Debby scrunched up her nose in distaste. "You're blowing us off for him?"

"Debby!" Jenna hit her friend's arm as she spoke up for the first time since approaching Tyler.

"No, it's okay," Tyler crossed his arms and glared a little. "Go ahead, what do you mean by him?"

"It's just that he's a loser with like one friend and he seems really boring and–"

Tyler cut her off. "No, he has two friends," he replied angrily. "And in what place are you in to be calling him a loser? You're the one who came over to me looking to fuck. And you hand to bring your friend who's obviously very embarrassed by the make out session we had a few weeks ago. Kinda pathetic that you forced Jenna to tag along if you ask me. I guess she was good enough for me and you wanted some of her luck to rub off on you."

Debby was speechless. Her mouth opened a few times only to be closed again when she realized that she had nothing to respond with. The only thing that broke the silence between the three was when Jenna began giggling. She covered her mouth with her hand when Debby shot her a look but Tyler could see the smile behind it.

"Bye, Jenna," Tyler smiled and waved at the blonde before he began walking to his car.

Once inside, he started it and began driving down the street he saw Josh turn on. Since his car was a lot faster than walking was, in didn't take long to find him.

Before Tyler could roll his window down to call Josh's name, the other brunette noticed him and began picking up speed.

"Josh!" Tyler tried. Silence. "Dude, I'm sorry about earlier!" Silence. "Josh, please get in the car," he attempted again. "We need to talk about Saturday still!"

This made Josh stop in his tracks. Tyler saw him sigh and walk over to the now stopped car. He unlocked the door and Josh got in, glaring at Tyler. "I'm only in here because I don't want to walk any further and I know you'll stop and get Patrick."

"But I don't have to pick Madison u–"

"We're stopping and getting Patrick," Josh repeated. "If you want me to tell you the truth we're picking up my brother."

"Beggars can't be choosers," Tyler mumbled and began driving again. After a few seconds of silence he spoke up again. "Okay, spill."
