Ch. 2
Hi you beautiful peeps! So, I just wanted to put on here that I may not be the best writer in the world, but I'm glad everyone who has read this so far has enjoyed it. Thanks for reading!
Annabeth
Percy slid into the booth next to me while Leo waved over a waitress. He was dressed in jeans and a white tee shirt, his face still covered with confusion, and his eyes darting around the room.
He had weird eyes. They were kind of a bluish green, which is never seen before. Like the color of the ocean. It was almost a sea-green, I'd say.
His hair was charcoal black, messy like he hadn't bothered to brush it in a year. Or more. He was tall, taller than both me and Leo, but not as tall as Jason or Frank, I'd say. Jason and Frank were a couple of guys at school that Leo hung around with sometimes, but we mostly kept to ourselves. It was kind of fun to see people run around making theories about us, even if some of them made me want to disgorge my lunch.
Percy was handsome, not that I noticed, but carried himself differently than other boys I knew. Like Jason, who was confident in himself. Percy acted self-conscious, which shouldn't have be a problem for him.
"Hey." Leo looked up from his menu and met eyes with me, "I hope you got the..."
I sighed, "Right here..." I pulled the few ten dollar bills from a coin thing I kept in my pocket. Leo looked relived.
"Good, 'cause I want a breakfast platter."
"Leo, that thing could feed an orphanage for a week. Besides, it's, like, nine." I protested. Percy glanced between us, looking slightly amused.
"Well, who cares? We've had one close call today, if another one comes-"
"Ethan isn't the brightest crayon in the box, Leo, but I don't think he's going to come after us again in such a short period of time."
"Yeah yeah, but either way I want to have the breakfast platter at least one more time before we leave town." Leo's eyes glanced around.
"She's off work today." I assured him.
"Thank the gods... I really don't think I'll be able to handle seeing her again." Leo said.
"Who?" Percy, who had been silent the entire time, piped up. Leo and I glanced at him.
"No one. Just Leo's ex." I shook my head.
"She wouldn't be my ex if we didn't travel around so much... She's sick of it. She doesn't like long distance." Leo sighed, "But she put up with it for so long. I don't really blame her for..."
"Leo, she falls in love with every man that walks through those doors." I assured him, "But she always comes back to you." I had to admit, it wasn't exactly a healthy relationship, but he loved her.
"Whatever." He ended the conversation there. I glanced at Percy, seeing his awkward shifting.
"You okay?" I asked, "I know this is probably confusing..."
"Who are you guys?" Percy asked, his eyes narrowing at us both. Suddenly, you could cut the tension in the room with a knife.
"I'm Leo, aka Hot Stuff Valdez, she's Annabeth, aka Brain Woman Extreme-" Leo said it slowly like he was explaining something to a toddler.
"No, no. I mean, what do you guys do? Rob banks? Are you in a gang?" Percy looked like he was grasping at loose threads, trying to weave something together. Leo snorted and I sent him a glare.
"No, Percy," I replied, "We're teenagers. We went to high school at Goode, just like you. The only difference is, we don't have parents. Well, we do, but... We ran away." He went quiet.
"Why do you trust me with that?" Percy asked. Leo and I exchanged glanced.
"Call it a gut instinct. You've always seemed pretty trustworthy and nice. Besides, it gets annoying with just Leo to talk to." Leo kicked my shin lightly from under the table and I glared at him.
"Oops?" He grinned.
"I've seen you at school." Percy pointed out.
"Of course, man. We've talked a couple of times, remember?" Leo turned to Percy.
"I don't remember much of high school anyway." Percy sighed, "Besides tests and crying, that is." I rolled my eyes as Leo burst out laughing.
"He's easily entertained." I explained to Percy. Leo feigned being insulted while Percy grinned.
"I'll have you know, I am the entertainer." He said snootily.
"To who? Your inventions?" I raised an eyebrow. Percy started chuckling.
"You two act like siblings." He pointed out.
"We practically are." Leo crossed his arms, "She's my annoying sister."
"Would that make you my irritating little brother?" I smiled at him.
"Three months." Leo looked up at the ceiling, "You are older than me by three months."
"I still am confused. Why did you barrel into my apartment today?" Percy asked. Leo's head shot up and he wiggled his eyebrows. I shot him a glare.
"I was being chased..." I sighed, "Ethan Nakamura."
"That transfer kid? But, he's tiny and quiet. He couldn't do any harm." Percy shook his head.
"No, but he could hold me there until a certain someone came to get me." I sighed, "Now that he knows that I'm here, he's probably going to tell Luke."
"Luke."
"Yeah, Luke. He's part of Kronos' Army and he's in charge of finding us." I rolled my eyes.
"And, why?"
"Because of reasons. Anyway, that's why you had to come with me. If they saw your face..." I winced, "They would assume you're associated with us."
"And then what would happen?" Percy looked kind of scared. Not that I didn't blame him.
"I don't know. But it was for the best that you came with me so that they couldn't get another good look at your face." I sighed, "They won't go back to your apartment. It's too dangerous now that you know what one of them looks like and that you could possibly be in danger. You would call the police."
"Yeah..."
I was surprised he hadn't run away yet. But he just sat there, eyes flicking between Leo and I. The two of us exchanged glances and Leo nodded.
"Well, you seem fine with all of this." I said, leaning back against my seat. I thought I saw Percy almost smile.
"Yeah, I actually think this is kind of cool." He said, shrugging. I looked down.
"Why?" Leo asked for me, looking at Percy like he had grown another head.
"You two were, like, the biggest mystery at school." He shrugged again. I narrowed my eyes at him. He seemed to punctuate his sentences with shrugging, which was kind of annoying.
"Typical." I shook my head, not being able to stop a smile from flitting across my face.
"Yes, waitress?" Leo waved his hand around. A girl with curly brown hair walked towards us, her gold eyes glittering. She held a little round tray in front of her like a shield. Leo's jaw dropped, like it always does when he spots a pretty girl.
"Hazel! I didn't know you worked here." Percy smiled, "How's Frank?"
"Hey Percy. Frank is fine, clumsy as ever. He almost broke his arm yesterday, tripping over the rug." She smiled softly. She flipped the platter over and pulled out a pen, "What are you getting."
"Two-"
"One breakfast platter." I glared at Leo. He pouted at me, "I'll take coffee."
"But it's nine." Leo said in a high voice, clearly attempting and failing to imitate me. Percy snorted.
"I'll take... A hamburger and a coke. Thanks, Hazel." He smiled, handing her the menus. She nodded, waving goodbye and leaving.
I leaned my head against the window, waiting for someone to say something. Percy sat awkwardly beside me, and Leo was occupied with opening sugar packets and dumping the contents on his tongue one at a time.
"Hey! You'll be up all night!" I scolded, grabbing the little bowl of packets. Leo narrowed his eyes at me.
"You know I have to have sugar or I get nervous."
"You always say that, but I don't think it's actually true." I raised my eyebrows. Leo gasped and Percy rolled his eyes slightly, looking over to smile at me.
"I'll have you know, I have never told a lie in my life!" He crossed his arms and leaned back, nose in the air.
"Right. And what about the time you told me that your parents were Barney and Yellow Bird?"
"I was, like, six!"
I scoffed, looking back out the window. The sun had gone down, and now it was completely dark.
For a moment, I wondered what we were going to do. And I cursed myself for dragging Percy into this as well, even though hopefully he'd be able to stay out of it for a while. I looked over at the car Leo had driven over and wondered where he had gotten it.
"Jason let me borrow his." Leo explained, looking at the window between us and the kitchen longingly, searching for his food.
"Ah." Was all I said. Percy looked between us.
"Are you psychic or something?"
"We just know each other really well." I laughed, shaking my head. Percy leaned back in his seat, looking up at the ceiling. He seemed to be taking everything in, so I stayed silent.
With a deep breath, I once again leaned against the window and closed my eyes. I was asleep in seconds.
