Seventeen: Chase

'I used to be a tree, until I traded my roots for routes. I have a rose, but I'm not a garden.'

As Chase starts to walk down the dimly lit halls, he starts to think. What could it possibly mean? It mentioned a tree and a rose. Could it have something to do with plants? It seems unlikely. Why does the Host have to make this so difficult?! Chase guesses if ten million dollars and lives are on the line, it makes sense. Whoever this Host is, they don't want their Game to be won easily.

Suddenly, someone bumps into Chase. He turns around only to be rewarded with a rather unpleasant sight.

Why oh why did it have to be her?

Vivica stands in front of him, a fierce scowl on her face.

"What are you doing?" Vivica looks around the hall, learning from the last time.

"The same thing you are; exploring."

"And how has that been going?" Chase and Vivica start to circle each other, never letting the other out of their sight.

"It's none of your business."

"I think it is. The last time you said that, Zuri's dead body was in a curtain."

"I'm telling you, I didn't kill her! I was just unfortunate enough to be found with her body!"

"Oh and you're just really unlucky, aren't you?"

"Considering all that's happened, I'd like to think so. Either that or this Host really hates me." Chase considers what Vivica will do to him, now that nobody is there to save him. Not that he needs saving, but there would be no witnesses.

"Why don't we just team up. Give me a chance to prove that I didn't murder Zuri." Chase really hopes that Vivica won't accept his empty offer. He doesn't want to be stuck with someone as annoying as she is.

"Fine. Just don't even think about trying anything!" She points a finger in Chase's face.

Chase is now completely sure that his guardian angel took the day off.

"I don't think the lights will help us this time. Why don't we start in this room?" Vivica's voice quickly turns innocent, which makes Chase worry for his life.

When she holds the door open for him, Chase has no choice but to walk inside. He keeps a careful eye on her as she, leaving the door open, walks in after him.

They appear in what seems to be a bedroom. 'Seems to be' are the key words here. There are* random pieces on the floor, filling the room and two windows on the wall, covered by stacks of books and statues. Chase wonders if the Host used this room as storage at one point in time.

Click!

He looks towards where the noise came from, noticing Vivica doing the same. The door, which was once letting light into the room, is closed. She walks towards the door and pulls, unable to open it.

"What did you do?!" Vivica screams at him.

"I didn't do anything! How could I do anything? I was over here the whole time!" he protests.

"I don't know! Maybe you were working with someone else?"

Chase takes a deep breath. He isn't going to argue with her. He doesn't want to argue with her. They won't get anywhere with them being split apart. They have to learn to work together.

Chase stumbles towards the bed where he sits down. Vivica looks at him, her face becoming less red as her expression turns to confusion.

"What are you doing? Aren't you going to argue back?" She looks at him.

"No, I'm not. You either take my word or you don't, I can't control what you think. We won't get anywhere arguing."

When Vivica sits on the bed next to him, Chase thinks she has calmed down.

Oh how wrong he was.

Vivica proceeds to punch him in the face—causing a bloody nose, a black eye, and a swollen tongue—twice, push him to the floor, and when he starts to get up from the floor she kicks him.

While Chase is mad, he knows why she did it. He did tie her up, after all.

"Okay, I deserve that." Chase gingerly brings his hand to his nose, hoping to stop the blood.

"You're right you deserve that!" she punches him in the gut, causing him to double over in pain. Vivica's face has turned red and her breathing has picked up.

"Are you alright?" Chase asks, playing at being concerned.

"Do I look alright?! And why do you even care?"

"Whether you like it or not, we're stuck together. There's nothing changing that but us." He groans as he reaches for the bed.

"And what do you suggest?"

"We need to put aside our differences and figure out why we're stuck here." Chase throws a few things off the bed and proceeds to sit cross-legged in the center. He looks at Vivica expectantly, waiting for her to sit down.

"So...how are you?" Chase asks. She gives him a look that seems to ask, are we really doing this?

"Fine." After a moment, Vivica sighs, "And how are you, Chase?"

"Fine, considering everything that's happened."

"Right. I guess this whole Game is kind of stupid, isn't it?"

"Yeah. I mean, what kind of twisted person puts twenty people in and will only let ten people out?"

"The kind that expects us to murder each other. Though, I guess that part has already started." Vivica glares at Chase.

"I swear I didn't do it." Chase holds his hands up in defense.

"If you didn't murder her, then who did?"

"I don't know. All I know is that I walked into the room to find Zuri's dead body wrapped up in a curtain."

A moment of silence passes.

"You really didn't murder her, did you?" Vivica's voice comes out quiet. Chase looks into her eyes and he realizes that maybe she isn't so bad.

"No, I didn't. But I really wish I knew who did it because that was..." Chase's voice trails off.

"Horrible." Vivica finishes for him.

"Yeah."

"And if they hadn't killed Zuri, who's only crime was being argumentative, mind you, then you wouldn't have tied me up. It was all the fault of the stupid person who killed her!" Her voice raises so that Chases has to resist putting his hands over his ears.

"Hey, maybe calm down—"

Vivica jumps up from the bed and grabs a nearby vase, throwing it on the ground. It shatters into a million pieces.

Creeeeeaaaak!

They both look at the door, which has opened slightly.

"Did that just..." Chase looks at Vivica.

"I think it did." She looks back at him, a wide grin on her face. She picks up something from the floor, a statue this time, and throws it on the floor. The door creaks open a little more, letting in a little light.

With a look at Vivica, Chase jumps from the bed and punches the glass that covers the cupboard. When it breaks, the door continues to open.

And so, Vivica and Chase start to smash everything that can be smashed in the room. It's not until the door is almost completely open do they take a moment to think.

"Everything's been broken. Why isn't it opening it any more?" Vivica scans the room for something that they missed.

"I don't know. The floor's covered in glass for heaven's sake!"

When she sees a small crack in the wooden table, Vivica gets an idea.

"We didn't break everything."

"What do you mean 'we didn't break everything'? It all looks pretty broken to me." Chase gestures to the whole room. The once-cluttered room was now almost completely clear, save for the occasional furniture piece.

"The wood can be broken. It might just take a little extra strength. Lucky for us, I'm pretty strong." Chase doesn't believe her at first, but when she smirks he knows he shouldn't doubt her. She walks over to one of the wooden chairs and snaps it over her knee.

Soon, wood pieces are flying around the room and they are covered in splinters. Chase is sure that, if anyone walked by, they would be able to hear the maniacal laughing. Vivica and Chase both have wide grins on their faces and for just a moment, Chase forgets that she had tried to have him declared guilty of murder.

Once everything in the room—including the windows—is broken, the door opens completely. When they realize this, they look at each other.

"So, I guess we did it. We can leave this room." Chase wonders if Vivica can hear the tint of disappointment in his voice. He really hopes not. It is much less complicated for them to hate each other than for them to like each other.

"Yeah. We can leave." Vivica, stepping over broken glass and wood, walks towards the door. Chase watches as she goes.

"Wait," she turns around, seemingly changing her mind, "You didn't kill Zuri."

"No, I didn't." Chase looks at her skeptically, "Where are you going with this?"

"I want you to make a promise—an oath. I want you to say that you will help me find whoever murdered Zuri and I want you to help me make them pay."

"You want me to promise that?" Chase decides he'll make her suffer for a moment, "Fine. I swear on my good looks that I will help you find out who murdered Zuri and I will help you make them pay."

Chase holds out a hand and Vivica takes it.

With a firm shake, Vivica says, "Let's get some sweet revenge."
