Chapter One

"Many moons ago, there stood five clans. Each had its territories around the lake. WindClan cats were wiry and brave, with long legs and swift paws to run the moors. They believed they were closest to the stars and so they slept under them each night. ShadowClan cats were wily tricksters, usually with dark pelts so they could blend in with the shadows that they used to hunt and attack in. They did most of their hunting at night. RiverClan cats had big paws for swimming, and they ate fish. SkyClan had long legs and sharp claws to dig deep into trees so they can climb them and jump between them like squirrels. They had joined the other clans in a journey from the gorge. ThunderClan was honourable and courageous. They-"

Sparkkit groaned loudly. "C'mon, Minnowcloud, you've told us this, like, a billion times! You said you'd tell us a new story." Wolfkit and Shallowkit nodded in agreement.

From behind her siblings, Fallenkit murmured, "B-but guys, it's an i-interesting story! I wanna hear it." But they didn't hear her over the ruckus they were making.

"Patience, dear kits." After a moment of thought, Minnowcloud sighed. "You're right. You four are apprentices soon, and you must know our history if you are to serve our clan with loyalty."

"When ThunderClan was ruled by Ivystar, RiverClan by Mossystar, ShadowClan by Lightstar, SkyClan by Needlestar and WindClan by Breezestar, all was at peace. That is until Breezestar waged war throughout the clans. As chatter of the war spread through the clans, a small group of cats from different clans met secretly, knowing it was wrong to fight. They spent the moons before the battle trying to stop the inevitable, but they failed in the end. As the clans fought on, they fled, unwilling to fight each other. The remains of the clans went after them, but could never find them. Legend says that the clans still search, but we are hidden away deep in this forest. We will always be safe. Rogues and kittypets such as myself joined along the way, and here we are now, flourishing more than ever."

"Wowww," The four kits murmured in awe. But then Shallowkit spoke up, "Okay, but isn't that not a true story? Like, that's way too crazy, and also nobody's come looking for us yet!"

Minnowcloud shook her head. "Oh, dear kittens. You have not yet been exposed to the horrible side of the world. And I pray you never will."

Just then, a tortoiseshell trotted into the den. "And, that's enough of that, thanks." She shot Minnowcloud a glare, which the kits missed. "Alright, dear kits, ready for bed?" She asked, waving her plumy tail side to side.

Fallenkit walked up to her and nodded obediently, but the other kits started a clamour. "Aww, c'mon! Please? The sun just barely set..." Sparkkit pleaded. "And we're not even tired!" Put in Shallowkit. Wolfkit growled. "Speak for yourself."

"Kits." Recognizing the warning tone in Shimmerlark's voice, they clumped together and began out of the elders' den and to the nursery.

Shimmerlark stopped and turned to MinnowCloud. "Thank you, Minnowcloud. But in the future, please... don't fill my kits' minds with prophecies of death and blood?"

Minnowcloud purred. "I'll keep that in mind, yes. But... they need to be ready to face the world, and you know that."

Shimmerlark narrowed her eyes. "That's what their apprenticeship is for." With a wave of her tail, she turned and left the den.

Sparkkit, Wolfkit and Shallowkit were already wreaking havoc in the nursery while Fallenkit sat out of the way and licked at her pelt.

Shimmerlark ducked into the den, going unnoticed only by the three kits. Marbledove purred. "Good to see you, my sister. Does Minnowcloud tell good stories? Shall I send my kits over there when they're born?"

Shimmerlark swallowed any foul words and said simply, "Do what you want with your kits. I'd rather not raise them, these four are enough." She tried to force in a laugh at the end. "And I'm not your sister."

Marbledove shook her head in faux disappointment. "Oh, Shimmerlark. Always taking things too seriously for your own good."

Shimmerlark mumbled something quietly and turned to her nest, where only Fallenkit was settling down. "Kits!" She called.

Sparkkit, Wolfkit and Shallowkit curled up next to Fallenkit and Shimmerlark wrapped her body around them. "Goodnight, kits." She murmured.

"Night, mama," Whispered Fallenkit.

Fallenkit woke up to something prodding her in the shoulder. "Sh-Shimmerlark?" She mumbled tiredly.

"Shut up! No, it's us." Shallowkit hissed. Fallenkit lifted her head, only to realize it was still dark. "Guys, why are you up? It's midnight," She whispered.

"We wanna sneak out of camp!" Whispered Sparkkit. Fallenkit flicked her tail. "What? Are you guys cra-" "Shh!" She rolled her eyes, lowering her voice. "Are you guys crazy? Four kits, out in the pine forest, all alone in the middle of the night?"

"C'mon! We'll be fine. Please, please, Fallenkit?" Pleaded Sparkkit. Fallenkit sighed. "Shouldn't we at least take somebody with us?"

Wolfkit snorted. "Are you insane? No warrior would come with us, and if we told them our plan all we'd do is get in so much trouble!" Fallenkit shook her head. "N-no! Like... Smokeypaw, maybe?" She tipped her head to the side."

Sparkkit's eyes lit up. "Oh- that's genius! C'mon, let's go."

The four kits crept through camp into the apprentice den, each lowered to the ground in an unprofessional crouch, with their tails waving and their belly fur brushing the pine needles littered over the dirt.

Shallowkit, the largest of the bunch, reared up and pummeled Smokeypaw's side, waking her up instantly. She came that close to screeching before realizing she was simply facing four unthreatening kits. "Guys!" She mewled quietly, careful not to wake Sunnypaw. "What're you doing in here, especially at this time?"

"We want you to sneak out with us!" Sparkkit said simply. Smokeypaw's jaw dropped. "What? Are you guys insane? We'll get in so much trouble."

Shallowkit smirked mischievously. "Not if we don't get caught."

Boom! There it is! I'm aiming for a minimum of 1000 words per chapter, but here there's only 997. Close enough, you know? And yes, Minnowcloud and her daughter, Marbledove, speak Spanish. No, I don't regret it. Okay? Don't judge me. They're already speaking fluent English, and it's my story so I'll do what I want.

Alright, that's it! g'bye!
