Question: Emerald was hit by a spell, my mystery is, could the spell have sent him to sleep? Because he was asleep most of the book, there's nothing to prove it wasn't a dream...

You have a very solid point, Sun. But with what I gathered, it's half and half.

The spell was actually a dream and reality darkening spell. In other words, hallucinations and nightmares. The spell turned his dreams into nightmares while his wakened form was hallucinating and having panic attacks.

So you're not wrong about the sleep, but that's because the spell was stronger when he was asleep. Everytime he woke up, the spell weakened. But whenever he fell asleep, it was stronger.

Honestly... that's pretty scary, but that's the true facts that I got about this.

Another source that I found told me that it was like a DoT (Damage over Time) spell. The things he was seeing while he was awake were actually pokemon like Gengar and other psychic/ghost pokemon just trying to get him to sleep so that the nightmares could kick back in.
