A Place to Stay Pt. 2
"Let's go," Peter said as he rushed past the receptionist. He obviously didn't want to be seen very much with Rose. They walked a few blocks away from the hospital before Peter called for a taxi. Rose went to grab the door handle, but Peter's hand landed on top of hers. "Uh-uh, let me," he offered. Rose smiled, surprised and blushed with embarrassment.
"Thanks?" she said questioningly. Peter got in in the other side and left the seat in the middle open.
"Who's this? A girlfriend? Friend of Claire's?" the cab driver asked in a thick foreign accent, causing Peter to jump startled.
"Suresh! You almost gave me a heart attack!" Peter exclaimed, putting a hand to his chest. Rose started laughing hysterically and both men gave her a confused look.
"Sorry, you said heart attack! Get it? Cuz you work at a hospital? Hahahaha!" Rose laughed. Peter blushed a little and shook his head.
"Looks like she has a good sense of humor to yes?" Suresh pointed out.
"No, we aren't dating; I'm doing a favor for Rose," Peter stated.
"For shame, you shouldn't let such a pretty girl go to waste," Suresh said. Peter and Rose shared a nervous look and then looked away, blushing at the thought. Suresh glanced at them through his rear view mirror and smirked.
"Oh, what do we have here? Two people who deny the fact they could be dating, but haven't taken the chance? Peter, you should take this Rose of yours to dinner sometime. You don't get our nearly enough, let alone, with a girl. Maybe she could teach you a thing or two?"
"Ok, ok, enough of that already!" Peter exclaimed and returned to staring out the window.
"I'm just saying," Suresh said defeated. Rose looked over at Peter and took in the sight of him being embarrassed.
"He looks cute when he's fed up," she thought, "Stop it! I can't think like that if I'm going to have to kill him." Rose let out a small sigh and looked out her window sadly. She didn't know if and when it really came down to it if she could honestly do it.
"Here you are, have fun," Suresh announced. Peter paid him and this time, he let Rose open her own door.
"Friend of yours?" Rose asked while Peter put the key in.
"Yeah, he means well, I promise," Peter answered. "There's not much to it; it's your stereotypical New York apartment," he explained. Rose took in all of the details at once.
"I think it's great," she reassured him.
"The bed is over there, the fridge and pantry are always full, and the bathroom is down the hall," Peter pointed, giving her the short tour of the place.
"Where will you sleep?" Rose suddenly asked.
"On the couch," Peter said, peering into her worried eyes. "We're both strangers to each other, so no way would I make you uncomfortable like that." Rose nodded as she dropped her bags by the door. "Are you hungry or anything?" he asked, opening the fridge to grab a water bottle and tossed it to Rose.
"Yes, I'm a little hungry," Rose answered, catching the water bottle with expert reflexes.
"I didn't think you were going to catch that for a second," Peter admitted.
"I have fast reflexes, sorry to disappoint you," Rose told him with a cocky smile. He returned the smile and went back to the fridge.
"I have fruit, yogurt, pasta, salad greens, carrots, muffins, leftover chocolate cake, and there's always ice cream in the freezer," Peter listed.
"Pasta is fine," Rose answered. Peter sished it up and put sauce and cheese on it before bringing the meal to the table. "Thank you," Rose said.
"You're welcome." They started eating, but Peter thought of something that didn't quite make sense to him. "Hey Rose?"
"Yes?"
"I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but don't you have your own place or family to stay with?" he asked. Rose thought of a a way to explain her unique situation.
"Where I work, I'm constantly on the move, so I don't have my own place. Work usually pays for a hotel, apartment room, or I stay with a co-worker. The job I was on didn't go as planned and since I was technically on vacation when it happened, my boss is being a bit of a jerk about it," Rose explained.
"Why is he being a jerk? It's not like it was your fault that you got hurt," Peter asked. That comment gave her the chills.
"If only he knew what I really am," she thought before replying, "Typically, I do everything as soon as I'm assigned to it, no questions asked; that's why I'm so high up in my line of work."
"I see," Peter said aas he tried to piece it all together in his head, "So...I'm guessing you're an agent of some sort?"
"Uh, yeah, I guess you could say that because my job is kinda classified; If I told you, I'd have to kill you," Rose said. Peter laughed, which didn't make her feel any better. Peter saw the sudden mood change.
"Are you ok?" he asked concerned.
"Yeah," Rose lied, "I have a pounding headache."
"Let me check," Peter said as he got up and put his hand on Rose's forehead to chech for a fever. Rose looked into his dark brown eyes and found herself getting lost in them. "You don't have a fever, but you do feel a bit warm," he informed her as he peered into her green eyes and also found himself getting lost in them. The two stayed there and stared at each other for a moment, taking in the other's features. Peter's cell phone rang, making both of them jump. They laughed and Peter checked the called ID. "Sorry, I have to take this." Rose finished eating and wiped her face. Peter sounded stressed with whoever it was he was talking to. He came back a few minutes later. "Work, one of the rookies had a question about something."
"I think I'm going to go rest," Rose said, cleaning up after herself.
"Ok, there's an extra blanket in the closet in case you get cold," Peter told her as he hurriedly grabbed his things for work. "I have no idea when I'll be back, but if you need anything, my cell phone number is on the fridge," he said.
"Ok, thanks," Rose said, looking at the number. Peter closed the door abd Rose could hear him pounding down the stairs. She pulled out her own phone and added Peter's number to her short contact list. It was barely eight o'clock and Rose felt tired; more so stressed than anything."Should I risk assassinating one or two tonight or should I rest up?" she thought. She decided to look through some of the names before suiting up. Four of the names on the list happened to be really close by. Because of that, Rose used the rooftops for cover.
After her last kill of the night, she stole a hot dog from a hot dog stand and climbed back to the roof of the building. Rose sat on the edge, letting her legs dangle. She stared out at all of the city lights and enjoyed the breeze that rocked her long braid back and forth. Suddenly, she heard sirens in the distance and had to jump back onto the regular roof flooring. The sirens came closer and soon, she could see the ambulance and police car coming down the road. Rose waited until they were right in front of the building before using the built in binoculars on her mask to see what was going on. Officer Parkman stepped out of the police car and immediately started taking statements. Rose's heart dropped when she saw Peter step out of the ambulance. She cupper her hand over her mouth with one hand and tried to remain calm, but she couldn't stop the small tear from escaping her eye.
