Chapter 18

Jason searched wildly in the fog, calling for Kamille and praying he didn’t just run off the edge of the building in his blindness. The wind whistled in his ears, swirling through the mist and limiting visibility even more. The city noise was as loud as ever, so he strained his ears to try and pick up any unusual sounds.

A faint thump sounded to his left, barely audible over someone’s road rage. Jason latched onto it, and blindly stumbled in that direction; calling for his sister all the while. There was no sign of the hero they had been fighting, and that worried Jason more than he’d like to admit.
“Wow! You lasted longer than I thought! I figured you’d have fallen off the roof by now!” a familiar, too cheerful-for-comfort voice rang out through the fog; but there was no speaker in sight.

Jason spun around, trying to pinpoint Super’s location in the swirling ocean of mist. “Where’s Kamille? What did you do to her!” he yelled, unsure of whether he was facing the right direction or not.

A gasp sounded to his right, and Jason faced the noise. “Oh how you wound me so! Your sister is fine. I like her, she could be a good hero with those powers of hers, but I can’t really have her in this fight. She could get hurt, and Optic would kill me if that happened. So she’s taking a short power nap while we finish this.”

The mist thinned a bit, allowing Jason to see the owner of the voice. Super stood a few feet away from him, arms crossed and smiling. “What. Did. You. Do.” Jason growled, taking a threatening step towards Super.

The hero shrugged, “a little choke-hold never hurt anybody, and I really just needed a few minutes to talk to you.” he waved one of his arms to the right, where Jason assumed that Kamille was unconscious and leaning up against something.

“Well you have my attention now.” Jason started slowly shuffling to the right, hoping to reach his sister and run before either of them got hurt.

Super floated after him, staying a safe distance away so he could dodge any surprise attacks. “Yea, I have a warning for you, and a question for you to think on.” Jason was now about a meter away from where he was originally standing, and he was still moving.

“First, the warning: I know you want to get closer to Optic, but be smart about it. He has a short fuse when it comes to his past or his family.” 3 meters away, Jason could see the dark outline of the elevator shaft now.

“Second, the question. I want you to think about this. Have you ever seen Optic and one of his brothers in the same room? Why do you think that is?” 2 meters away, Kamille’s fire-colored suit stands out from the silver fog. She is slumped up against the wall, just as Jason had expected.

“What do you mean by that?” He asked, stalling for time. He was only 2 feet away now.

“What I mean, is that I have to go now, I think you've learned your lesson. Approach Optic about this if you’d like, but don’t be surprised if he pushes you away. He’s good at that.” Super flew up out of sight before Jason could ask for more information. The fog began to dissipate, and Jason ran to his sister’s side; propping her feet up on his lap and laying her head down.

He sat like this for a while, waiting for her to wake up, and pondering what Super had said. Come to think of it, he hadn’t seen Optic and his brothers in the same room. He always made some sort of excuse to leave before they arrived. Of course, Optic could just be changing his clothes every time...but he seemed like a really bad actor. So if they weren’t his brothers…

What were they?
