Chapter 17
That had escalated much faster than Kamille had intended it to. As soon as Super finished his sentence, he charged at them; crossing the wide rooftop in a couple of bounds. She had to haul her brother out of the way to avoid getting flattened by the red and yellow bullet.
Super streaked past them, so close that it blew the hair out of Kamille’s face. Once she was sure that he was past them, she let go of Jason’s arm and felt her hands heat up, to her right, several stones levitated into the air.
“Wow! You guys are fast!” a chipper voice sounded out from the other end of the building, “This would actually be fun if it was a real fight! It’s a good warm up though!” He was laughing, clearly not taking this seriously. That was a big mistake on his part.
Jason growled and sent numerous flying objects up at the hovering hero, who lazily dodged them all; and punched a few of them to splinters whenever he got bored. “Here, try this.” Kamille superheated a few metal shards, and set some wood on fire for Jason to hurl up into the air.
“Woah!” Super narrowly swerved around a fiery crate, only to have his hand clipped by a red, flying blob of metal. It didn’t cause too much lasting damage, but his glove had seen better days, and his hand now had a nasty red burn on the palm. “Argh! Man, that actually hurt!” he cried, clutching his smoking, gloved fingers to his chest.
Jason and Kamille shared a fist bump, the latter having to discharge the heat in her hands so as not to burn her brother. “Yeah! We hit him! We can do this!”
Clearly, Super was not used to pain. He was still holding his hand to his chest, and hadn't said a word since he was hit. “Uuhhh...you okay?” Kamille asked, a bit wary of the wounded hero.
Super said nothing. The background sounds of cars, wind, and chatting people would have drowned him out even if he had spoken.
“Why won't you talk? Had enough?” Jason taunted, as Kamille warily continued to heat up debris. “Or are you ready to quit.”
Super stood there for a moment, still as a board save for the flowing of his cape in the wind. “There is one thing you should know about me…” silver mist rolled in from the skyline, surrounded the red-clad man, almost hiding him completely from sight.
Kamille felt his hot breath on her ear as he spoke, invisible in the fog, but still close enough to be heard when he whispered, “I don't give up. Ever.”
A hand clamped over her mouth suddenly, and pulled her into a choke-hold. She struggled and fought, but the cold mist made it impossible to heat her hands up enough to do any damage.
Kamille could feel the headache approaching as circulation to her brain was cut off. She could faintly hear Jason calling her name as he stumbled blindly about in the unnatural fog, all of the city noises were now just static on the radio. All she could hear clearly now, was the loud beating of her heart in her ears; and a soothing, deep voice saying: “Close your eyes. You are safe now. No one can hurt you, I will not hurt you. All you need to do, all you want to do, is go to sleep.”
Kamille didn't really have a choice, as the lack of oxygen caused her brain to lapse into unconsciousness.
