Chapter 69
Calum's PoV
Once again, the days flew by in a flurry of sound checks and performances, barely giving us any time to spend with each other or to relax. It was crazy just how fast it went. Before I knew it, we were into another month and nearly on the way to our last stop - Australia for the final leg of the tour. When we looked back, we couldn't believe we'd been touring for so long and travelled to so many places, all of which we now held special me dories. For some, the memories weren't so good.
I had been more than relieved to realise that Naomi had finally stopped following us around and trying to break Poppy and I up. It was never going to happen, I really hope she'd realised by now, but in her mind I felt like it would always be there as a possibility despite my objections. Because of her, many things hadn't run smoothly and people had got hurt but luckily nothing was permanent and we got through it all. Jack was on the mend, Naomi had recovered fully, Poppy was fine after not only the car but the cancer. Everything was slowly filtering back into normality. Sierra's recent head injury turned out to be fine, Crystal's pregnancy was going smoothly and they were on countdown. Everyone was in good spirits.
"Urgh." Poppy groaned beside me as she rolled onto her side and switched the bedside light on, illuminating us from one side. She reached around the beside table half asleep until her hand connected with a glass bottle. Slowly she dragged it closer to her and undid the childproof lid, taking one huge gulp of the medicine before she put it back down on the table.
"Heartburn again babe?" I wrapped an arm around her as she snuggled into me.
"Always at night. Always when I'm sleeping." She mumbled drowsily. It was that moment that my alarm started to blare, indicating that it was now time to get up. Today was our final day off and we knew we needed to make the most of it, so we planned to get up early and go on a day trip around in the van, just taking in the sights and sounds and smells. It was going to be amazing.
It wasn't long before we were all downstairs, full of breakfast and coffee and raring to go. We filed into the van; Piotr in the driving seat with Dave beside him, Ashton, Bex and Sierra behind them followed by Luke, Crystal and Michael and finally myself and Poppy in the back. We were all chatting happily as Piotr set off on the start of our journey to just about everywhere we could think of.
"So, how was your night?" Crystal turned back to look at Poppy, who clutched a decaffeinated coffee in a thermal flask.
"Don't even. The heartburn makes me want to cry." Poppy sighed, taking a long sip of her coffee. Crystal let out a laugh.
"Oh sweetie. I know how you feel, it does get better, trust me. The worst is at the beginning." She offered her a sympathetic smile. Michael turned to me with a smirk on his face.
"Yeah, it's been really hard so far." Michael said to me, letting out a snigger as he finished talking. Crystal smacked him on the arm jokingly and shook her head.
"Oh it must have been so hard for you to literally just be the same whilst I got bigger, put on weight, got swollen ankles, had low blood pressure, had to have regular bloods taken, had the baby kicking my bladder and ribs on an hourly basis and felt sick for half my pregnancy." Poppy's eyes widened as the list continued to grow, scared for what was to come. I put an arm around her.
"It may not be like that for you!" I tried to be positive.
"Yeah, it could be worse. My friend had morning sickness so badly she was hospitalised for the whole pregnancy." Bex added, receiving a mental slap from Sierra who glared over to her. I watched Poppy sink into her chair as she glanced out of the window, probably with a hundred things flowing through her mind.
"Well someone I know had a two hour labour and it was really nice." Sierra tried but Bex sounded shocked.
"But what if you weren't ready? You'd end up giving birth in a car or something!" Bex said, making it sound like a bad thing once again. Luke and Ashton groaned at their stories, knowing they weren't making this conversation any better for any of us, the fear slowly beginning to eat away at my stomach too. What if Poppy was really bad? Too unwell to tour with us whilst the pregnancy went on? What if she gave birth without me there? What would I do if I missed the labour because I was touring or something? My anxiety began to grow so I knew I needed to steer the conversation to something better.
"Okay, anyone have anything positive to say?" I said, trying to sound like I was messing about despite the message being quite serious under that.
"It's one of the best feelings ever." Crystal added. "I mean, the moment you feel the little flutters of their movements and you see them on the scans it truly becomes real. Then you'll be able to feel them Cal. I remember when mike first felt the movements..." Michael let out a soft smile as he put a hand on Crystal's stomach.
"It was insane. I had my hand on her stomach and bam this little foot or hand hit me. It was like I got a high five or something." He said and Crystal laughed at his description. I could finally see a smile appearing on Poppy's face as she continued to look out at the greenery we passed, where you could see for miles and miles all the way to the horizon, it was beautiful. Suddenly, Poppy sucked in a sharp breath.
"Piotr!" She shouted and as he glanced to his side, like we all did, we saw it. The speeding lorry, going through the red light and heading straight for us. "Move!" She began to yank the people seated on the left side of the car over to the right, including herself as she shuffled us along. It was almost like slow motion as I watched the lorry remain at that speed, not even trying to slow down, as it plowed into the left side of our van and dragged it across the road, the metal groaning and straining under the weight of the lorry as the van tipped onto two wheels, throwing us all around within the van until the lorry finally came to a halt.
