Chapter 67
Poppy's PoV
The flight and new hotel move went without a hitch and we all confidently strolled into the arena for a soundcheck slightly ahead of schedule. After checking in and getting our passes, we all headed back to the van to grab the instruments and other boxes that were needed for the band to do soundcheck. I grabbed a couple of Ashton's cymbals that were in cases and followed the rest of the band who were lugging in their guitars and other parts of the drums. Sierra and Bex said they would handle the amps and boxes of cables.
"How have I never realised that you guys have so much stuff?" I laughed to them as we struggled backstage with the many cases.
"Should you even be carrying those?" Luke questioned but I tutted.
"I'm pregnant Luke, not injured. I'm fine with these." As we got backstage, I kept my eyeline to the ground as we navigated through bundles of wires and weights that were being secured for the show. They must have been setting up the lighting as we got there.
"Watch your footing!" I called behind me but with no response, I gathered that Sierra and Bex behind me were just too busy concentrating. It wasn't until I heard an almighty crash and a scream that I knew they didn't hear me. Dropping the cymbals where I stood I doubled back and ran towards the commotion, Bex seemingly in a state as Sierra lay on the floor. Nurse mode kicked in straight away.
"Oh god. Si? Are you okay?" Bex asked, too scared to move her as she lay face down on the floor.
"Bex, concentrate. I need the medics box." I ordered her calmly and she ran off straight away. "Luke!" I called out, knowing he'd be worried if he didn't know what had happened. The urgency in my voice had clearly scared everyone and before I knew it the whole band surrounded me. I slowly felt along Sierra's neck and spine, receiving a groan in response.
"Babe?" Luke asked carefully.
"Sierra, does anything hurt?" I asked and she pointed to her head. I moved her onto her back very carefully, making sure to check everything as I went along to make sure nothing was badly injured until I saw her head.
"Shit." Luke cursed, bringing his hands to his mouth as he took in the gash on her forehead. The blood was running fast down her face, making it look ten times worse than it was. I looked around and noted a water machine near the back.
"Someone grab me a plastic cup now." Calum sprinted off whilst Luke remained rooted to the ground, looking down at his girlfriend with a worried expression . Calum practically threw the cup at me and I placed it over her eye to stop the blood from going into it. "Si, if you can I need you to hold the cup." She shakily brought a hand up and held the end of the cup to her head.
"I feel like such an idiot." She whined. "I'm sorry." I shooed away her apology.
"You have no need to be sorry." Bex arrived back with the medical kit and I got to work. Putting on some gloves, I grabbed some saline and a piece of gauze and got to cleaning the area, wiping as much blood away as I could so that I could see the real damage. She must have hit her head pretty hard as the gash was small but deep, meaning she'd probably need it to be glued back together. I searched the medical kit for something I could temporarily use to stop the blood and in the end grabbed some more gauze and a huge plaster, taping it down over the wound. "Si, listen to me. I need you to monitor for signs of concussion. If you feel sensitive to light, have a headache or ringing in your ears let me know. And even if you feel tired, try not to have a nap for a couple of hours just to be sure." She nodded, groaning out in pain as she grabbed her head.
"Can I have some painkillers?" She whispered, closing her eyes and scrunching her face up in a pained expression.
"Of course, lets get you sitting down somewhere and we can get some." Ashton and Luke pulled Sierra to her feet and we all headed along to their dressing room. The guys had to part quickly for soundcheck but the girls, Crystal included who stayed in the back of the dressing room resting her tired legs, all waited in the room. I got her a glass of cold water and some tablets and she took them, relaxing back into the sofa as she took some deep breaths in.
"That was terrifying Si, don't do that ever again." Bex scolded, pacing around as her mind wandered to the bloody mess she had seen. Sierra shrugged drowsily.
"It's not like I did it on purpose!" She snapped, groaning as she placed her hand on her head. "Is there literally nothing more i can take?" Regrettably I shook my head.
"Sorry, you've taken the maximum I can give you for now." She moaned like a child not allowed to have that second sweet they wanted. "And you need to give them time to work, you took them about three minutes ago."
"Not fair... I'm so clumsy." She cried out, a few stray tears rolling down her face. I sat myself next to her and put my arm around her shoulder.
"Hey, accidents happen. They really should have cleared the wires or covered them before we came through. It was a hazard and an accident waiting to happen." Bex and crystal nodded in agreement.
"I mean we've all had something happen to us that Poppy has sorted out. Don't feel bad." Crystal tried to lighten the mood but Sierra seemed less than impressed which was unusual for her normal self. I'd have to keep an eye on her because I knew too well that changes in behaviour had a link to concussion.
